Actions<br />
9.10.1 To work with Shannon Development on the replacement of the existing Visitor Centre with<br />
a purpose-built structure in a more accessible location and linked to alternative modes of<br />
transport, that can meet the various needs of high-class interpretation and comfort<br />
provision and including a recreated ‘Neolithic Village’ or similar visitor attraction.<br />
9.10.2 Incorporate state-of-the-art audio-visual displays, exhibition displays and sales/information<br />
facilities as an integral part of the new visitor centre.<br />
9.10.3 Refurbish the Knockadoon visitor area for refreshment and comfort facilities.<br />
9.10.4 Supplement improved interpretation facilities with both concise leaflet guides and more<br />
comprehensive guide books with detailed maps.<br />
9.10.5 Implement rural road traffic calming scheme between Holy Cross, <strong>Lough</strong>gur Cross and<br />
Knockadoon, such that the route is safer and more compatible for pedestrian and cycle<br />
use.<br />
9.10.6 Undertake an audit of all existing interpretation, information and regulatory signage and<br />
implement a strategy of replacement based on minimising intrusion and achieving a coordinated<br />
presentation of <strong>Lough</strong> <strong>Gur</strong> and the routes to it. Include new ‘on-site’<br />
interpretation facilities (for both archaeological and ecological features) and information<br />
and welcoming signage.<br />
9.10.7 Provide for additional car parking at two proposed ‘Activity Areas’ on the main Bruff road,<br />
including provision for coaches.<br />
9.10.8 Monitor visitor numbers and introduce a ‘park-and-ride’ facility, based at the two ‘Activity<br />
Areas’ and linking to Knockadoon and the interest sites between.<br />
9.10.9 Improve pedestrian access to the shoreline by entering into formal access agreements with<br />
landowners.<br />
9.10.10 Construct a network of surfaced walkways linking the main visitor attractions.<br />
9.10.11 Implement renovations to Bourchier’s Castle to allow safe visitor access and the<br />
incorporation of interpretative display material as part of a circulatory trail around this focal<br />
part of the lake.<br />
9.10.12 Carry out minor up-grading of other key monuments, including access improvements and<br />
their settings.<br />
9.10.13 Provide bird hides at suitable locations.<br />
9.10.14 Encourage public use of the area to the maximum extent compatible with public safety,<br />
preservation of natural resources and with retention of a quality experience for visitors.<br />
9.10.15 Ensure that access to and from facilities within the area meet the provisions of the Health<br />
and Safety requirements to provide as safe an environment for visitors as possible.<br />
9.10.16 Carry out a review of visitor Health and Safety requirements and make visitors more<br />
sensitive to their own responsibilities through literature and signage.<br />
9.10.17 Monitor the use and maintenance of existing pathways, improve where necessary and<br />
produce leaflets to accompany the walks.<br />
9.10.18 Select certain routes to be surfaced as appropriate for visitor safety and accessibility to<br />
people with impaired mobility.<br />
