Forewordhanging climate, loss of native forests,disappearance of biodiversity, water shortages, desertification, the reduction of natural soilfertility — all add to the scenario of a world with increasingly complex environmentalchallenges. But further complicating this scenario of environmental degradation is the factthat these situations are unavoidably linked with other global challenges, such as financialcrises, increasing social inequality and population pressure, all of which contribute to theuntenable number of people on our planet who do not have enough to eat, a number nowestimated at almost a billion.The gravity of these global challenges certainly raises questions about what, until now,has been the status quo — the way we operate agricultural production systems, the valuewe attribute to natural resources and ecosystems, the way our resources are shared, and howthey are conserved for future generations, if at all. The concept of Payment for EcosystemServices (PES) has emerged as a challenge to the all-too-prevalent tradition of takingthe Earth’s natural resources for granted. PES highlights a global continuum, illustratingthe relationship between our lifestyles, the demands associated with our production andconsumption patterns, and the effects those demands have on close or distant ecosystems.PES can be used as a benchmark by which policy-makers, investors, NGOs, landownersand local people who benefit from ecosystem services can evaluate their approaches anddetermine if they are supporting a sustainable model of development. In this case, sustainablewould mean that it recognises the right of people to guide their own development, seeksenvironmental integrity, enhances economic resilience, supports food security and embodiesxi
