YEAR OF FAITH
This month marks fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican
Ecumenical Council, which was opened by Pope John XXIII at St Peter’s Basilica in
Rome on 11 th October 1962. All the Catholic bishops of the world met together in four
sessions of several months each year until December 1965.
The Council, known as Vatican II for short, was the most momentous event in the life of
the Catholic Church for centuries. The Italian word aggiornamento was taken by many as
the best way to express its purpose, to bring the Church up to date, seeking to present the
eternal truths of the Church’s faith in the modern world and looking at the problems
confronting Catholics and all Christians in these times.
The Catholic Church throughout the world will be celebrating a Year of Faith, running
from 11 th October until the Feast of Christ the King 2013, to mark the anniversary and
seeking renewed inspiration from the teachings and spirit of the Council for the Church’s
mission today. Father David Finegan
