Want ToKnow More?Take A Look At The SimpleDesign Of The Engine. TheOne-Piece Cylinder HeadContains The OverheadCamshaft. This CamshaftArrangement Provides AVariety Of Benefits:■ Intake and exhaust passages arestraight for easy entry and exit ofair from the cylinder. The enginedoesn’t waste fuel “pumping” airin and out.■ Intake and exhaust passages arealso short. Intake air is not overlyheated as it passes through thehead. The resulting cooler air inthe cylinder improves economy. And the hot exhaust gases don’ttransfer too much heat into thehead as they exit, preserving moreenergy to operate the turbo.■ The overhead cam allows fordirect actuation of the fuelinjectors without push rods orpush tubes. The result is high fuelinjection pressure and betterfuel economy.■ The overhead cam also allows forthe use of 38 head bolts on theSeries 60, providing up to1,000,000 pounds of clamp loadon the head gasket for extremelylong life.■ Inside each cylinder liner is theDDC TM Iron Cross Head Piston. This iron piston provides a hardsurface for the rings to sealagainst, unlike aluminum, whichrequires a special cast insert.■ Outside, the cylinder liner iscooled all the way to the top, using a patented DDC featurecalled top liner cooling. Thisreduces ring temperatures by 100ºF, another reason Series 50/60engines live so long.■ Main and rod bearings are big. That’s why the Series 50/60engine has no requirement to rollout bearings - it’s just notnecessary. The Series 50/60 engine block, with no camshaft is a simple, troublefreedesign.Add the gear train to drive theaccessories and the camshaft, and you have a complete Series 60engine.■ Simple■ Rugged■ Easy to work on■ Key components are right underthe rocker cover■ Fewer parts mean reducedmaintenance expense
