Series 50 ® AndSeries 60 ®The proven 8.5L Detroit Diesel Series 50engine is the 4-cylinder version of thepopular Series 60 with the same heavydutyqualities as the larger 6-cylinderSeries 60. With a horsepower rangefrom 250 bhp to 350 bhp, this is theideal engine for applications where hightorque and horsepower are demanded. The first commercial diesel engine with afully integrated electronic control system, the Detroit Diesel Series 60 is theworkhorse engine other manufacturershave tried to imitate. Engineered forlong, trouble-free operation, the 300 bhpto 665 bhp Series 60 is designed forhigh reliability, long engine life, and lowcost of operation.Features and Benefits■ A complete power range from acommon package■ Reliability and durability leader inits class■ Low life-cycle cost■ The complete DDEC System:Integrated engine managementand control system. Noadjustments or tune-ups meansreduced downtime. Improved fueleconomy. Fewer parts improvesreliability.■ Unaided cold starts to 20º F■ DDEC-controlled automatic etherstarts to –30º F■ Over 125,000 20,000-hourengines■ The overhead cam allows for theuse of 36 head bolts on theSeries 60, providing up to 1million pounds of clamp load onthe head gasket for extremelylong life.■ Main and rod bearings are big. That’s why the Series 50/60engines have no requirement toroll out bearings–– it’s just notnecessary.■■■■General SpecificationsSeries 60Outside, the cylinder liner iscooled all the way to the top, using a patented feature calledtop liner cooling. This reducesring temperatures by 100º F,another reason why Series 50/60engines live so long.Inside each cylinder liner is an ironcross head piston. This ironpiston provides a hard surface forthe rings to seal against, unlikealuminum, which requires aspecial cast insert.Intake and exhaust passages areshort and straight. Hot exhaustgases don’t transfer too muchheat into the head as they exit, preserving more energy tooperate the turbo, and the enginedoesn’t waste fuel (pumping air inand out).Simple design, easy to serviceSeries 50 Series 60 Series 60Basic Engine 4 cycle 4 cycle 4 cycleNumber of Cylinders 4 6 6Bore x Stroke in 5.1 x 6.3 5.1 x 6.3 5.24 x 6.61(mm) (130 x 160) (130 x 160) (133 x 168)Control DDEC ® DDEC ® DDEC ®Displacement 8.5L 12.7L 14.0LDimensions: (approx.)Length, in (mm) A 44.3 (11.25) 57.2 (1453) 57.2 (1453)Width, in (mm) B 35.3 (897) 34.3 (872 34.3 (872)Height, in (mm) C 52.8 (1341) 54.2 (1377) 54.2 (1377)Weight, lbs (kg) 2190 (993) 2550 (1157) 2550 (1157)CAB
