Some shipments may not be cleared until you have a residence permit, for instance if
you have household goods like furniture and electronics and/or if your shipment is over
300 kilograms. Residency permits typically taken until September or October to be
completed. Please instruct your shipping company not to send your shipment before
you tell them to do so. Before you sign a contract with a shipping company, make sure
they provide a customs broker. The school recommends that teachers use the school’s
preferred customs broker as they are familiar with the school’s and teachers’ specific
needs. Their rapport with the school makes it significantly easier for the school to
facilitate your shipment. Shipments weighing less than 300 kilograms and containing
only personal effects do not require a residency permit to be cleared by customs.
INSURANCE IS A MUST.
4.10. YOUR HOUSE DURING YOUR STAY
The business office helps to contact maintenance and repair services should these be required, and
expenses are paid by the teacher, unless the appliances belong to the school. The school’s Buildings
& Grounds personnel will often do minor repair jobs for the Bahçeșehir apartments. Maintenance
visits are scheduled on Thursdays (unless it is an emergency). Expenses regarded as "made to order"
leasehold improvements are charged to the faculty member. The school cannot guarantee
maintenance assistance for downtown dwellers.
4.10.1. TENANT’S INSURANCE
To ensure peace of mind and to protect your belongings in case of accident, tenant’s insurance is
recommended and can be purchased by teachers with the help of the Operational Services Manager,
Ms. Pinar Demirkan. The risks automatically covered by the insurance policy include compensation
for damage caused by: fire, earthquake, lightning, explosions, theft, flood, internal water damage,
storms, landslides, smoke damage, snow weight, vehicle impact, aircraft impact, financial liability
caused by fire (neighborhood/tenant liability), electronic equipment insurance, loss of rent, temporary
residence cost (due to suffered losses), strike, riot, civil commotion, malicious acts, and terrorism.
The policy can be extended to include: new replacement value, fixed installations’ theft, repainting,
transportation to a temporary address, fuel leakages, and valuables.
4.11. YOUR HOUSE ON YOUR FINAL DEPARTURE
The operational services department helps teachers to arrange the vacating procedure. You must
notify the office staff by February so that the final arrangements can be made for your lease
agreement. Closing accounts at city electric, gas, water, and telephone companies is important and
needs to be done prior to your departure. The IICS business office staff meets with departing
teachers in March in order to help everyone understand what will be required.
4. 12. MOBILE PHONES
If you are interested in purchasing a mobile phone and line for it, please contact Pınar Demirkan at
pdemirkan@iics.k12.tr for assistance.
4.13. EMERGENCIES
Power cuts do happen occasionally. You will need a battery-operated alarm clock. Candles and a
torch (flashlight) are also good to have on hand. In case of water cuts, it’s a good idea to keep some
containers of water filled for emergency use. Note that tap water is NOT drinkable, but bottled
water is available.
