5.2.7. WINE, BEER, SPIRITS
You can also purchase beer, wine, and liquor from stores. Although local and imported beer and
wine are relatively cheap, liquor is not. A pint of Efes beer at the pub is around $3-10 depending on
the establishment, but around $1.50 at the market. A bottle of liquor such as Bacardi or Johnny
Walker is $30-50 depending on where you buy it. Cocktails can be as expensive as $8-$25 a drink.
5.2.8. POTABLE WATER DELIVERY
Istanbul’s tap water is not considered drinkable, therefore it is quite common for people to have 19liter
water bottles delivered from one of the many water delivery stores. The current price of one
19-liter bottle is 5-10 TL depending on the brand. A deposit is required for the initial bottle/s at a
price of 5-10 TL, and if you wish to purchase a pump for the bottle, that can range from 5-20 TL, so
you may choose to buy a pump more cheaply from a house wares store like Bauhaus, Praktiker, or
Koçtaș. It is not required but is customary to give a small tip to the delivery person as it helps ensure
to expedite your next request, which may help if you are in a hurry.
5.2.9. PROPANE GAS FOR COOKING
For the propane gas tanks for ovens, stoves, and sometimes water heaters, there are many firms
who deliver, but it is recommended to use one of the more reputable firms, including the following:
Aygaz: www.aygaz.com.tr Tel: 0212 444 4999
5.2.10. APPLIANCES
Many name brand appliance stores exist as well, although you can get durable and dependable locally
manufactured appliances for less money (Arçelik, Beko, and Vestel). Electronics such as a decent
computer system are not much more than European prices. US $700 would buy you a good, latest
model computer. US $600 would buy you a decent dishwasher and US$750 would buy you a new
LCD TV (32 inch screen). It is recommended to use one of the more reputable firms, including the
following: Teknosa, Media Markt, or Bimeks.
5.2.11. SHOPPING RESOURCES:
Some of the internet resources listed in this guide are Turkish sites, but within a short time, you
should be able to navigate the menus with ease to find what you’re looking for, or you can ask
assistance from the local IICS staff.
