4<strong>Headline</strong><strong>Gitnang</strong> <strong>Luzon</strong>JUNE 26, 2013EDITORIALUnder the microscopePampanga Gov. Lilia Pineda haszeroed in on the anti-flood works of theDepartment of Public Works and Highways(DPWH) in Pampanga to avertpossible tragedies as a result of failedinfrastructure projects that are supposedto safeguard the province fromperennial flood. The governor held several dialoguesand inspection with DPWH officialsand contractors on existing andongoing rehabilitation and constructionworks especially in flood-prone areas.Last year, the tail dike that was constructedto save thousands of residentsfrom lahar in the ‘90s, was breachedand caused massive flooding to atleast two towns of Pampanga. The inundationdamaged millions of pesos inproperties.Similarly, the Arnedo Dike in Arayattown has also taken too much poundingfrom the swelling water f the PampangaRiver, weakening its foundation andthreatening to submerge many towns.Though the province has been preparingfor floods almost every year, itwas caught flat-footed by the extent oflast year’s flooding only because floodcontrolinfrastructures failed big time.Whatever preparations the provincialgovernment will do will be futile ifstructures that are supposed to providedefense against floods give in easilybecause of poor quality as a result ofcorruption. The governor has sent a strongwarning to the DPWH to put all itsprojects, especially anti-flood ones, inorder or it will start flooding chargesagainst erring officials.HEADLINE <strong>Gitnang</strong> <strong>Luzon</strong> is a Daily Regional NewspaperGeneral Manager: Atty. Thisis due perhaps to the great volume oflicense applicants per day at LTO licensingoffices.***The new law that repealed mandatorydrug testing was signed into lawby President Benigno Aquino last May30. Come into my house; here youwill be safe.” Blindly she followed the savingcall, and before she knew what hadhappened, the door of the clamshell closedtight. At first the dewdrop gave a sigh of relief. But then slowly it dawned on her thatshe might be safe in this new house, butnever be free again. She would never againbe able to reflect the rainbow colors of thesunlight. She confided her worries to the friendlylady of the house. The old clamshell toldher, “If you stubbornly fight against whatfate has in store for you, you will just findyourself suffering hopelessly and helplessly. But if you patiently accept all that fatehas in store you will be at ease.”And then she added mysteriously, “Thenyou will grow stronger from within yourself. And, one day you will be a thousandtimes more than when you fell off the tree.”But the dewdrop sulked. Then she finallydecided to follow the advice even though shedid not understand it. She lived on silentlyand without complaining, completely turnedin on herself as she grew inside the clamshell. She somehow felt that there was somethinggrowing inside her and giving herstrength. So,roughly, she gets homearound after 5 p.m.Eujahn is only 6 yearsold, so we still allow her toplay after schooling but, asearly as now, I can see howdisciplined she is when itcomes to her studies. As soon as the clockticks 7:30 p.m., she’d sleepno matter what she’s doing. She’d even cry if it’s already8 p.m. and we still askher to have her supper.I was never like her whenI was in my pre-school days(Okay, fine..I still am not). But, what I am really fascinatedabout is the fact thatthe school is able to inculcatesuch discipline on theirstudents at a very youngage. And their lessons?Geez! They study the partsof the leaves and turtles; sheknows the history of EmilioAguinaldo and the inventorsof airplanes that I can’teven compete.I sometimes wonderPen TalksAubrey F. Sembrano“Why do wehave to spendhalf of our livesin school when, truth be told, wecan only learnthe things weneed to knowwhen we’re alreadyout therepracticing it.”how these teachers could instill all of these thingson children. I mean 4, 5 or 6-year-olds are veryhard to handle and, mostly, they are still pre-occupiedwith toys. Then, I realized, maybe, that’s what sets apartprivate from public schools. I’m sorry, but I don’t really see the pointof prolonging the years of studying because, honestly, there are so many lessons and subjects webarely use when we start working.Indeed, we should elevate the quality of educationbut I don’t think extending two more yearsdoes upgrade it. What we need are qualified educators.Remember Uppercut’s issue regardingthose teachers who can barely write an article? How do you expect them to teach our children? How about we screen first those eligible andhighly-qualified educators from those incompetent?Quality education doesn’t mean longer years;it’s providing the right curriculum and excellentinstructors for students. And since they have alreadydecided which career they want to pursue, they should be taking those subjects that will beuseful to them right away because, normally, weonly take our major subjects on the latter yearsin college.Let’s take for example: I love writing eversince I was 7. It’s the reason I took up Mass Communicationsand I sometimes wish I had severaltrainings on my writing or language subjects, because, right now, in this field of work, I don’tsee the relevance in writing of XY=Z or E=MC2,which we have studied for four years in highschool and another six years now?Seriously, it’s some study that were just wastedeventually because, I swear, I’ve never usedthem until now. I leave all computations to ouraccountants. It’s their specialty, anyway.Science and all its branches, as well as Mathematicsand all its methods, are useless when Iwrite. Well, I mean, it’s good to know and learnabout them but to dig deeper and master everythingabout it for more than 15 years won’t makesense unless you’re a scientist. What I’m trying to point out here is that itis about the curriculum every school offers. Weneed subjects that can be used in the real world. If you’d take a look at my transcript, the very firstgrade you’ll see is “3” which is equivalent to 75%--and that is Chemistry and Chem. Laboratory(Panira talaga ng transcript e. Ni hindi ko namannapakinabangan)!Doctors, lawyers and engineers have qualifyingexams before they could even call themselvesprofessionals. What about those who teachthem? What do they actually know? Are theoriesalways enough? In my opinion such courses should have professorswho are actually practitioners. How cana man preach about long lasting marriage whenhe never experienced being married and havinga lousy wife/ husband? Why do we have to spend half of our lives inschool when, truth be told, we can only learn thethings we need to know when we’re already outthere practicing it.I’ve had radio programming subject way backin college but the things I know today weren’t exactlytaught when we were studying. We are prolonging the years of studying for abetter education. But, are there enough jobs waitingfor them? Ang dami ng mga underemployed. We keep molding intelligent students yet wegive them away when we let them find jobs in othercountries because there are no decent jobs for themhere. Why not spend that allotted budget for theextended years in investing on first-rate educators? Why can’t our government come up with intelligentplans? Oh! Well, maybe because those whomake decisions for our country are short-sightedand we are the ones who put them there. And, the sad part here is that the blame ison us. ●NUTRITION from Page 3national governmentagencies’ unified flagraising ceremonyat the GovernmentCenter in BarangayMaimpis here.Contests on poster-making,jinglewriting,quiz shows, food fairs and cookingdemonstration willalso be conducted forthe whole month. The council willalso hold seminars, lectures and similarfora on hunger andpoverty in the region, added Mañez.The said celebrationis in accordanceto Presidential DecreeNo. 491 known as theNutrition Act of thePhilippines which createdthe NNC. ●

SHOWBIZVOLUME II • NO. 11 • JUNE 26 2013 • WEDNESDAYTuloy pala ang giyera-patani ninaMarian Rivera at Mother Lily! We all thought that MarianRivera and producerMother Lily Monteverde havepatched things up at the pressconof “My Lady Boss”.Diyos Ko, day, may picturetaking pang magkayakap pasila, yun pala peke naman. This is the first time in yearsna walang solo entry ang Regalsa MMFF. Kahit ang entertainmentpress, they havebeen calling and askingme: Why? So, I thought, must I tell a lie… again?I don’t want to pretendanymore. Should Ikeep protecting my stars?Ano ba ang magiging kalagayannamin, ng Regal, kung ganun? I am a cancerpatient, so, I want to havepeace of mind. I want to justifymy conscience, what have Idone wrong? I don’t know, butGod may call me anytime, so, Iwant to go in peace naman. And so, I might as well revealthe things that happenedbetween me and Marian Rivera. For the record, I have nothingagainst her managementteam, Triple A, or its head, mylongtime best friend Tony Tuviera.I have so much love andrespect for Tony. But this is what reallyhappened. Three weeks ago, Icalled Triple A’s Rams Davidand told him we have an offerfor Marian to do a MMFF entrywith Judy Ann Santos.Matagal bago kami nakakuhang appointment kayRams. Rams, my daughterRoselle, and I had a meeting,9 a.m., at Starbucks in Greenhillstwo weeks after my firstcall. We talked and laid outRegal’s plans. That time, Marianwas in the U.S. Rams toldme he will get back to me. Henever did.So, I called him a weekafter and asked what our statuswas. According to Ramsand I quote: ‘Gusto ni Marianng solo movie.’ In fairness toJuday and Tito Alfie Lorenzo, they never turned me down.Juday said she wants toread the script first. Na tamalang naman. Ready namanang script namin. But Mariandidn’t want to do it. Why? Becauseshe wants a solo movie.Marian breached her Regalcontract twice. First, when sheshot for this movie, My LadyBoss, without Regal’s knowledge.Nakapag-first shootingday na sila nung malamannamin. So, out of pakikisama,Regal decided to justco-produce this movie withGMA Films. Sinasabi ni Marianna pinagbigyan pa nila akobecause I requested that theydon’t field Kung Fu Divas inthe MMFF? Hindi ako nagrequest.Ipinatigil ko becauseshe did that movie with AiAidelas Alas without Regal’sconsent. Maging totoo langsana tayo.Marian, you should tellthe truth. You breached yourcontract with Regal two times.I really feel sad. Hindi akogalit. Ayaw ko lang na ako paang lumalabas na sinungaling.I just don’t want to lie andkeep my star’s image clean…at Regal’s expense. We mustbe true to ourselves and talkabout truth here. Bukod dito, doon dindaw niya nakilala si Tim, nanagtatrabaho naman bilangconsultant sa katabing barna pinaglilingkuran niya.“If there’s anythingI’ve learnedbeing away for 12years, it’s that lifeis not all showbiz, glamor, pictorials.I wanna be anartist, producer...actor. Sabi nga niDirek Boots Platadati, ‘stars fade, actresses last alifetime.’ So, ’yun,I wanna be that,”ani G.H a n d s - o nmom si G sa dalawanganak. I’m so happythat everyone gaveme a very warmwelcome,” aniya.“I was surprisedat that and at howadjusting back toshowbiz life afterbeing away for solong proved so much easierthan I expected. Ibinentaraw niya ito sa GMA Internationalat kasalukuyangipinalalabas sa Amerikastarring Dante Basco.“I feel like there’s somuch more that I can do.There’s so much more Iwant to do not only as anactress but as a filmmakerand producer as well. Iwould like to take on morechallenging roles whetherin front or behind the camera, and I would like to beinvolved in more meaningfulprojects. Sayang namanang pag-alis ko kung hindi,’di ba?” pagtatapos ni G.motherlilyJackie Forster angbabaing isinumpa ngsariling mga anak! And speaking of Jackie Forster, hindi makapaniwalaang marami noon na isinumpa na siya ngkanyang unang pamilya. Una na yung pinaboranng korte si Benjie Paras noon na sa kanya mapuntaang pangangalaga ng dalawa nilang anak, who atpresent time ay malalaki na at papasok na showbiz.Ito sina Andre at Kobe na parehong star in theirown right.Kung noon, malabo sa publiko yung rason ngpaghihiwalay nina Benjie at Jackie, it is slowly takingshape now. Some writers would like to avoid theissue kasi nga sobrang masamang lalabas at hindipaborable sa babae. But reading between the lines sa sinasabi ngdalawang bata that they are not ready to face theirmother, halata talaga’ng bitterness nila.
