STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIESWhen on Clinical Placement at St Vincent’s Health• Students at all times must wear a University Identity Card whilst on hospitalgrounds.• Students must identify themselves to patients, staff and visitors as a studentnurse.• Students must at all times adhere to St. Vincent’s Hospital Policy andProcedure Guidelines in regard to patient care. Additionally students shouldfamiliarize themselves with the hospital student policy.• Students must adhere to the uniform code of their University.• Neat and professional attire must be maintained during clinical experienceincluding hair tied back and jewellery kept to a minimum. Small stud earringsor sleepers (no more than 2 in each ear) are acceptable as is a wedding ring, butno other jewellery is to be worn. Nail polish also not to be worn. A wristwatchinstead of a fob watch is acceptable.• The reputation and image of St. Vincent’s Hospital is upheld by theperceptions that patients and visitors form of staff. For this reason students areexpected to be courteous and considerate to patients, visitors and staffmembers.• Students must be punctual at all times. Should the student be unavoidablydelayed the clinical teacher must be notified as soon as possible.• Student must inform allocated buddy when leaving the clinical area for mealbreaks or at end of shift.• Patient information is to be regarded as confidential at all times. Studentswill be required to read St. Vincent’s Hospital ‘Privacy and Confidentiality Policyand Procedures’ document and must have signed a ‘Confidentiality Agreement’with either the University or the St. Vincent’s Health.• Students must ensure efficient use of materials and equipment.• All entries in patient records and medication charts must be countersignedby buddy/preceptor (Division 1 RN).• Any changes or concerns in regard to patient condition must be reported toyour buddy/preceptor or nurse in charge immediately.• Student nurses are not permitted to take a blood sample for cross matchpurposes.• Textbooks or educational material belonging to ward or clinical areas maynot be removed. All St Vincent’s Hospital forms and information are theintellectual property of the Hospital and are therefore copy write and subjectto the relevant laws.• Students are not permitted to use the hospital photocopiers, however mayuse the Library photocopier - Card-operated photocopiers are available.• Students are advised to keep personal items and valuables to a minimum, asSt. Vincent’s Hospital accepts no responsibility for these.8
LIAISON AND RESOURCE NURSESNurse Education Coordinators / Clinical Nurse EducatorsAssist with the professional and practice development of nursing staff, bycoordinating local and health service wide education. Acts as a resource andsupport to nursing staff at all levels. There are Nurse EducationCoordinators/Clinical Nurse Educators at all campuses within St. Vincent’s andin specialty areas. Reporting to the Nurse Education Manager, contact one ofthe team via NurseEducation@svhm.org.au.Practice Development NurseResponsible for supporting the transition and clinical learning of newgraduates and staff to the general acute and sub-acute clinical environmentsacross the Fitzroy campus by providing direct clinical support and supervisionto new nurses to ensure patient care standards and best practice is promotedand maintained.Diabetes EducatorThe Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes based at STV offers acollaborative, consultant nursing and medical service to inpatients at Fitzroy,outpatients, and the community. The Diabetic Educators assist patients toaccept and integrate diabetes management successfully into their lifestyle.Inpatient referrals should be made as early as possible to maximise individualassessment, ongoing teaching, review, and efficient discharge. To contact aneducator for advice, refer a patient, or arrange an in-service for any campus,page 161, phone ext. 3675, or fax. 3677.Drug and Alcohol Liaison NurseThe Drug & Alcohol Liaison Nurse based at STV assists staff to care for patientswith drug and/or alcohol problems. Drug & Alcohol Services can be contactedfor assessment and information regarding the management of a specificpatient, as well as for general management or education regarding drug andalcohol issues. To contact Bronwyn Murphy page 194 or phone ext. 2642.Infection Control Clinical Nurse ConsultantThere are five Infection Control Clinical Nurse Consultants across St. Vincent’sHealth who act as a clinical resources, clinical advisers, conduct surveillanceand provide education sessions as required. Contact one of the team:Joanne Cocks – pager 621 or ext. 4069Marie Summerville – pager 1432 or ext. 2020Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Nurse (PCLN)The Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Nurse is part of the Consultation-LiaisonPsychiatry Team based at STV that assists general clinical areas in the care ofpatients with mental health problems. The PCLN can be called by any memberof nursing staff for patient assessment, treatment and advice.
