July 19 - July 25, 2013 • www.conchcolor.comRandy Roberts Soars in World Premiere of “Chance”In San FranciscoNew Musical Theater of San Franciscois presenting the world premiere ofa production entitled Chance: A MusicalPlay about Love, Risk & Getting It Right.Richard Isen (book, score) has createda truly refreshing and moving storyabout the journey of Gregory, (RichardHefner) a middle aged gay psychologistmoving from a reclusive, fearful existenceinto a life of more courageous, lifeaffirmingengagement. A gay psychologistand a handsome young rent boystumble down a unique path to healingwhen guided by a mysterious Hollywoodglamor queen (played by a gender illusionist).55 year old Gregory has spenthis adult life denying the loss he experiencedas a young man during the AIDScrisis. After a near-death experience, TheLady appears. Is she an inner guide fromthe Jungian collective unconscious? Ora musical hallucination resulting from asmall stroke? Gregory is pushed out ofhis solitary reality, by his unlikely muse, and down the rabbit hole of mid-lifecrisis where he enters into a turbulent, dangerous relationship with a youngmale escort named “Chance.” (This productioncontains strong language, adultsituations and partial nudity.Roberts, in a tour de force performance,as The Lady, is remarkable. Withhis glamorous turbans, regal gowns andimperious bearing, he is part NormaDesmond, part Margo Channing, andpart Auntie Mame with a touch ofScarlett O’Hara and The Spiderwomanthrown in. A highly acclaimed dragperformer and impressionist, he alsoproves to be a consummate actor withthe most powerful singing voice in theshow. Richard Hefner is utterly convincingas the cerebral, cautious, andconflicted psychologist Gregory. Heseems to embody an air of resignationuntil his meeting with the aptly named“Chance” throws him into an emotionalturmoil. As the title character, youngKen Lear is a wonder. Playing the roleof a hunky hustler, he seems to be rightout of central casting. He is boyishlyhandsome, remindful of a young JohnVoight in Midnight Cowboy. But unlikeVoight, whose character was completelyguileless, as Chance, Lear projects astreet savvy that helps him to survive ina hostile world. What’s more, in his seductionscenes with Hefner’s Gregory, hegives forth an aura of utter confidence inhis ability to please his clients and a rawanimal magnetism that is palpable. IfLear should ever need a second career tofall back on, this could be a particularlylucrative one, with a long waiting list ofprospective customers! All three actors are consummate singers, and are a joy to hear. Each has a bigmoment toward the end of the show inwhich he has to deliver songs filled withraw emotion, and Roberts, Hefner andLear more than live up to the challenge.
