Brandt Scholz
Owner/Manager
B & L CUSTOM JEWELERS
The beautiful selection of men and women’s jewelry that line the glass cases make a
statement without words that quality is definitely at its best at B & L Custom Jewelers.
Just the variety of gems, from emeralds to my personal favorite, sapphires set with diamonds,
is enough to make any jewelry lover smile. If you are looking for beautiful and
unique, B & L Custom Jewelers is the place to be. Who makes this place “tick”? It is
not all the gorgeous watches in the case, but Brandt Scholz.
Brandt has been in the jewelry business for 35 years. His journey began with a summer
job polishing jewelry in Philadelphia. 16 years ago, he moved to the area through
his wife’s job. He worked in several Jewelers in Winston and decided to open his
business in February of 2004 in the Main Oak Emporium. With his successful business
he moved into his current downtown location almost 2 years ago.
B & L Custom Jewelers is a full service jeweler from on site repairs to custom made
designs. If you have an idea or picture, Brant can create it. Brandt is the only Graduate
Gemologist in the area. He also is a certified jewelry insurance appraiser.
You always see Brandt out in the community. He is an active member of the Greater
Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce, the President of the Downtown Business Association
and a member of Rotary. He uses these organizations to meet new people and
to share ideas. “By meeting new people, It makes it a pleasure to come to work everyday.”
“I chose to locate my business in Mount Airy and I have invested in Mount Airy
through investing my business here”. Brandt says it is important to support Tourism
and the Community. “ Ultimately what is good for Mount Airy is good for Downtown”.
DENISE WATSON—EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
MOUNTAIN VALEY HOSPICE &
PALLIATIVE CARE
Hospice of Surry County dba Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care began in the 80’s as
a grass roots effort by the Altrusa Club. They are a free standing and self supportive Hospice
center with their own board. Mountain Valley Hospice is owned 50% by Northern Hospital of
Surry County and 50% by Hugh Chatham. Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care continues
to provide the highest quality care possible in our area by putting their mission at the top
by “Making a difference, one family at a time”. Mountain Valley Hospice is definitely making
a difference one community at a time. Community is their agenda. The Greater Mount Airy
Chamber is fortunate to have them as active members. Mountain Valley is always represented
at the Business After Hours, Ribbon Cuttings, Chamber Surprise, Committees and
The Ambassador Club. Denise Watson says, “People believe in what you do if you have ties
to the community” “Reputation and Integrity are necessary for successful programs”. Recently
plans came together for the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson that
offers 20 patient and family suites. This would not have been possible without the support of
this community.
Denise Watson is the Executive Director for Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care. Denise
became a part of the organization in 1994 as a case manager through a recommendation
by a friend stating it was a rewarding position. Denise’s background was with labor and
delivery. She came aboard and immediately felt she had missed out on the biggest part of
nursing care. In 1998 she took an interim position as Executive Director that lead to the permanent
position in 1999. . “Not everyone can work in this field; you don’t do it for the pay
check. You really have to want to make a difference in the lives of these families and be an
advocate for the patient.” “My outlook for this position is visionary. I have an incredible team
oriented staff that makes it happen” Denise’s goal is to bring awareness to families and encourage
families to discuss their options. “Families should have the conversation with their
loved ones early, don’t wait.” The earlier we can become involved, the bigger the difference
we can make.”
When Denise takes a break from her busy schedule with Community and Hospice functions,
she spends time with her family, describing herself as “The Soccer Mom”. She is married to
Greg and has 3 children; Ericka 16, Samuel 12, and Alexis 8.
Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care offers many programs and services. They offer
transition programs, non-medical support programs, the hospice program, bereavement support
and grief camps. Classes and free forms are also available through Mountain Valley
Hospice.
Their employees are regular people and at the end of the day, it is all
about costumer service. The Chamber Surprise Patrol enjoyed learning more
I was doing a search of Mt. Airy, for our upcoming Vacation in July, and found your
radio station. I love the Music your station plays, and I think it is the station I listened
to years ago before I retired from Trucking. In the mid 1980s I ran a load of
explosives every week out of Dayton Ohio, to either Charlotte NC, or Winston Salem
NC. and would come back to the Northern part of NC to find something to haul back
North.
I am really looking forward to coming back to Mt.Airy, and see how much has
changed. I used to go up 52 to Fancy Gap, and get on I-77, that was a pretty good
climb in a heavy semi, and more fun to come down the hill. Very Beautiful country you
have there, and I really enjoy listening over the internet to your station.
Keep up the good work!
From a listener… WPAQ
P.S. If I could get my wife to move, we would be living in the Mt. Airy

Housing Starts Surge in May
June 23, 2009--New residential construction surged in May.
New residential construction
Housing starts surged 17.2% in May to 532,000 units, following a 12.9% decrease in April.
Permits for new housing also increased in May, up 4% from April. However, compared to
May 2008, housing starts are down 45.2%. The improvement in single-family units indicates
that the correction is slowly nearing its end. With low mortgage rates, an $8,000 tax credit
available to first-time home buyers, and new, lower-priced homes offered by builders, buyers
will slowly begin to reenter the market. However, growth in the housing sector will be tempered
by the glut of foreclosed homes on the market and consumers' continued worries about
the overall health of the economy.
Industrial production
Industrial production decreased 1.1% in May after declining 0.7% in April. Mining fell 2.1%,
utilities were off 1.4%, and manufacturing decreased 1.0% in May. Capacity utilization declined
to 68.3%. With continued weakness across the economy, expect industrial production
to remain weak this quarter, especially as further production cuts are made at auto manufacturers.
Consumer Price Index
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) posted a 0.1% increase in May. During April, the CPI was
unchanged. A 0.2% monthly increase in energy prices led the overall uptick in the index in
May. The core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, increased 0.1%. On a year-ago
basis, the top-line CPI decreased 1.0% while the core CPI is up 1.8%. Inflation appears in
check as consumers and businesses have pulled back on spending because of the financial crisis.
Producer Price Index
Producer prices for finished goods increased 0.2 % in May, building on April's 0.3% gain.
Food prices dropped 1.6% in May, but energy prices rose 2.9%. Prices for core crude goods
increased briskly at 6.7%, while the prices for core intermediate goods and core finished
goods fell 0.2% and 0.1%, respectively.
