COMPOSITE, NON-RUBBERMAIN SEAL BODYeliminates the weakest pointof standard seals.Most mechanical seals use a rubberbellows or spring-loaded rubber/siliconehose to connect the seal to your boat.This type of connection works - however,it is the weakest point of the seal assembly.If the bellows or hose is punctured or ifthe material weakens or fails, largeamounts of water will enter the vessel.Also, severe leakage will occur if someonesteps on the seal body or accidentallydisplaces the seal off center.The <strong>Duramax</strong> Main <strong>Seal</strong> Body has beendesigned to eliminate the use of a rubberbellows or spring-loaded hose. It employsa rigid, spring-loaded, composite bodythat cannot be knocked off the seal face.The main seal body is attached to anadapter ring by a neoprene sea gasket.If this sea gasket were to fail, the seawaterwould enter the sealed spring chamber.This special design feature providesa secondary seal to the main body sealand would prevent the entry of seawaterinto the vessel.STAINLESS STEEL TENSIONSPRING ensures a reliable seal.In order for a mechanical face sealto work properly, face tension or pressuremust be placed on the rotating seal ring andthe stationary friction ring. This tensioncreates the seal between the two faces.<strong>Mechanical</strong> face seal manufacturerswho utilize a rubber bellows rely on thecompressibility and durometer of the rubberto maintain the face tension. As the rubberages and loses its physical properties,the amount of face pressure decreases,which affects the reliability of the seal.The <strong>Duramax</strong> Shaft <strong>Seal</strong> <strong>System</strong>eliminates the problems associatedwith rubber bellows by utilizing anengineered 316 stainless steel coil spring.The spring diameter and number of coilshave been designed and tested to providethe proper face pressure that creates areliable seal and ensures a long wear lifeof the seal faces.AIR VENT/WATER INJECTIONFITTING ensures adequate waterlubrication.In order for a mechanical face sealto work correctly, a thin film of wateris required between the two seal faces.This water film acts as a lubricant,carries away frictional heat and maintainsthe proper seal face temperature.Every <strong>Duramax</strong> Shaft <strong>Seal</strong> <strong>System</strong> hasan air vent/water injection fitting thatprovides adequate water lubrication at theseal face.
