Freshmen Enter
New Woodring
Scholars Program
The first cohort of students in the
new Woodring Scholars program
has been named. The program is
designed to encourage students
from high need areas to enter
teacher education and human services
by inviting a select group of
entering freshmen to participate as
scholars.
The program will provide a distinctive,
small-group experience for
these students who have demonstrated
superior academic achievement
and interest in teacher
education or human services.
Students will be able to pursue their
interest in Woodring College of
Education programs early in their
college experience, while gaining a
network of academic and social support
through Woodring students,
faculty, and staff.
SAA Program Receives National Recognition
The Student Affairs Administration in
Higher Education graduate program has
gained recognition as an outstanding
program.
Successful graduates of the 30-year-old
program foster student learning and success
through effective design and delivery
of services and programs in higher
education. The impressive positions
they obtain upon graduation is an indicator
of the effectiveness of the program
in facilitating high levels of competence
in its graduates.
Recent graduates accepted student
affairs professional positions at Harvard
University, Texas A & M, North Seattle
Community College, UC Davis,
University of Arkansas, Washington
State University, Stanford University,
Whitman College, University of Puget
Sound, Northwest Indian College,
Western Washington University, and
many other academic institutions.
What accounts for the highly qualified
graduates? Critically important is the
set of 15 learning outcomes and lengthy
internships that shape and guide the
curriculum.
“We are very intentional about how
to Susan Mancuso, chair of Woodring’s
Department of Educational Leadership
and director of the SAA program.
In addition, there is a nine-month internship
in a student affairs office, quarterly
conferences or field trips, an engaging
applied Master’s research project, quarterly
retreats, and a program culture in
which the cohort of students and faculty
are highly collaborative as a community
of learners.
An acknowledgement of the program’s
excellence was a peer review by University
faculty this past spring in which the evaluators
lauded the positive opinions of
students and graduates of the program,
the highly integrated curriculum, and
the strong connection of the program to
professionals in the field.
Shasta Cano, a student in the two-year
track program, said she pursued this
career because of how helpful student
affairs professionals have been to her
throughout her college experience.
“I’m a first-generation college student,”
Cano said. “Reflecting on my college
experience, the people who have helped
