EDITOR’S NOTE恭喜發財photography // niseko photographyBEFORE anyone arrives for first lifts in the morning, local avalancheexpert Shinya-san (interview page 19) has already checked theweather forecast, Japan’s coast-guard information, tested the snowand written his avalanche report for the day. His role in Niseko’smountain safety is undeniably one of the most important.ON New Year’s Day, Niseko had its first avalanche fatality in 12 years whenan experienced skier made a poor decision to hike the back bowls duringa high-risk time. For those wanting to go back country this year, please becareful. Black Diamond Lodge runs a backcountry seminar every Tuesday(see details page 45), which is great way to get a basic understanding ofbackcountry skills and avalanche awareness. Shinya-san’s daily report, writtenin both English and Japanese, is also mandatory reading for those goingbackcountry – you can find it at http://niseko.nadare.info.On a lighter note, Kong Hee Fatt Choy (happy new year)! This issue of <strong>Powderlife</strong>coincides with the beginning of Chinese New Year (February 3). Growingup with a Malaysian/Chinese father, I have fond memories of Chinese NewYear and I’m glad I can still experience the excitement of this event whilst livingin Japan, as a steady flow of Chinese guests enjoy their holiday in the snow.The Year of The Rabbit is traditionally associated with home and family,artistic pursuits, diplomacy, and keeping the peace. It’s a verysmooth experience; gentle, scenic, and with just alittle bit of extreme thrown in at the end. A single ridecosts ¥1000, or alternatively a 30-minute pass isavailable for ¥1500. It’s a great activity if you feel likea quick break from skiing and snowboarding.ORIGINATING 1500 years ago in the countrysideof China, bamboo tapping is believed to dispersewind and cold from the body. He is alsoinspired by his summer vocation –leading sea-kayak tours in the WorldHeritage Listed Shiretoko Peninsula,Northern Hokkaido. For the last 20summers, Shinya-san has beenguiding people around the coastlineof this pristine location. “Everyday wesee bears, many bears, brown bearsand small bears and big bears. Verygentle bears.” In the future, he hopesto do the same kind of trip around theAleutian Islands in Alaska. He has beento Patagonia five times and kayakedtwice around the southern most point,Cape Horn, during winter. “I’m the onlyperson in the world to do this twice.”When asked what he likes better– kayaking or skiing – Shinya-sanresponds immediately with the latter.In recently released Persona by EbisFilms (<strong>Powderlife</strong> presents January24th at Sekka, details page 13),家 でした。しかしオリンピックでアルペンスキー 写 真 家 のアシスタントのアルバイトをさせてもらいました。その 時 の 衝 撃 は 今でも 忘 れません。それからアルペンスキーに 興 味 を 持 ち 始 めました」。この 冒 険 心 ・ 探 究 心 は 新 谷 氏 がいつも 持ち 続 けているものである。 現 在 の 時 点 でカヤックとスキーをやめる 気 持 ちはない。「 仕 事 、 人 生 をやめたくないですね。 本当 にやめるときが 分 かるまで 今 の 仕 事 を続 けます」。もしかしたら 新 谷 氏 が 山 のパトロールをやめる 日 が 来 るかもしれない。 実 際 、 氏 は現 在 、 雪 崩 事 故 防 止 のために 講 習 会 で 教えている。 山 に 来 るみんながそれぞれ 安全 に 山 を 楽 しんで 欲 しいというのが 新 谷氏 の 思 いである。「 山 には 事 故 のリスクが多 いです。 常 にね。 雪 の 状 況 は 毎 日 違 います、リスクを 避 けるためには 天 候 によって自 分 自 身 でどのルートを 行 けばいいのか考 えるべきです。そして、 自 身 のこと、 安 全だけを 考 えるのではなく 他 人 の 安 全 、 喜 びこそを 考 えるべきです」。Shinya-san describes ski racing as hisfavourite thing to do on the mountain.“In 1972, during the SapporoOlympics, I was only a climber at thetime. At the Olympics, I did a part-timejob – assistant photographer for thealpine races – it left a huge impressionon me and I started to get moreinterested in alpine racing.”This sense of adventure issomething Shinya-san will always beinstilled with. For now, he is sure thathe will keep kayaking and skiing:“I don’t want to stop my job or life.I will keep doing my job until I trulyknow it’s time.”But, there will be a time whenShinya-san will no longer watch overthese mountains – he is currentlytraining his protégé in the fine art ofavalanche control. But, what he wantsis for everyone to have fun and enjoythemselves well into the future bystaying safe: “On the mountain, thereare many risks – always risks. To avoidrisks, you have to think about whichroute you take and this depends on theweather. Maeda-san looksproud of his restaurant and asks usto find a seat, of which there is only asmall four-top table remaining on thefloor, for four foreign-sized bodies.This restaurant fits about 25people in total and has been herefor 27 years. Each table settinghas a clear view of Maeda-san atwork as he works diligently behindthe counter. WIth his head down,Maeda-san glances up only to smile,take orders, grate fresh wasabi, andpluck fresh abalone, shellfish, clamsand scallops from the bubblingtank on the counter. Maeda-san’swife weaves through the tables anddelivers the delicious platters of sushiand sashimi. She is relaxed andhappy, and together, they createa convivial feeling that’s often lost inthe sleek composition ofJapanese dining.Whilst contemplating the menu,Maeda-san calls over the ambientchatter and asks us if we want sushior sashimi – we want both, but heoffers us a “Sashimi Scramble”, asin a mixed selection of sushi. As wesip on glasses of beer, a plate arriveswith deliciously fresh sashimi prawns,abalone, scallops, yellow tail, salmon,squid, tuna and octopus. Having justskied all day, we are famished andthis plate disappears before we havea chance to finish our drinks.For our sushi selection we optfor sea urchin, salmon, eel andmackerel. The sea urchin shouldbe eaten first so that it’s as freshas possible. It’s creamy, deliciousand something that should be triedwhile in Japan; admittedly it’s not toeveryone’s liking. Both the salmonand tuna shine under the lights;their orange and deep pink colourglistens. Best described as ‘fishy’,the mackerel is also a personalfavourite with its oily texture andsharp taste.Also on offer are sets of sushi rollsor ‘maki’ and hand-shaped rolls,as well as various rice bowls suchas uni-don (sea urchin with rice),ikura-don (salmon roe with rice) andtekka-don (tuna with rice).Best of all, Chiharu Sushi is aplace where everyone is welcome– Maeda-san will make sure youhave the best sushi experience at hisrestaurant. Theirsize and age steadily increasefrom children to teenagers.They hold a giant rope, pullingsomething around the corner thatwe couldn’t yet see. The soundsof drumming, cheering, cymbalsand festival flutes got louder andfaster and the hidden object, agiant wooden danjiri (a portableshrine on wheels), came into view.After several minutes under therelentless baking summer sun inOsaka, the cavalcade stopped pullingthe danjiri as it approached the corner.The music quietened and the ropeslackened. One last quick breath wastaken before charging at full pace,pulling the rope with as much zestand zeal as their fatigued bodies couldhandle, jerking the cart violently aroundthe corner with the use of woodenlevers underneath the cart. The menpulling the danjiri don’t slow down andkeep running and pulling the woodenchariot off into the distance, with asmuch vigour as they can muster. Theirstamina and flamboyant performanceis as much of a representation of theircommunity as is the craftsmanship oftheir danjiri.The Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri issteeped in history, dating back to early18th century when the ruling lordswould allow peasants a single day toenter the castle. Carpenters, musiciansand fisherman from each communitywould race to be the first to show offtheir wares, and to bask in the attentionand admiration of their lord. Thistradition has continued, though it hasadapted to match a modern Japan.There are 32 communities, each withtheir own danjiri that they race aroundthe streets between Kishiwada stationand Kishiwada Castle. Children areintroduced to the festival in simpleand safe roles, and as they age theyare given more significant roles in thefestival.There are many danjiri festivalsin Japan, but Kishiwada City’s isconsidered to be the most famous andalso the most dangerous with deaths,severe injury and property damagenot uncommon. The festival involveshundreds of people pulling a 4,000kgornately carved wooden cart at highspeed through narrow alleys andaround tight corners. These exquisitely“A festival that is frequently touted as beingJapan’s ‘most dangerous festival’”carved carts are quite top heavy,and because of the rapid changes indirection that are required, they areprone to topple over, causing damagenot only to the cart, but also to thepeople riding it and any spectatorsand property in the way. Buildings inthe area actually have special danjiriinsurance policies in case of such anaccident occurring.It may sound sadistic, but there issomething strangely fascinating aboutwatching a festival that is frequentlytouted as being Japan’s ‘mostdangerous festival’ and waiting forthe carnage to unfold in front of yourvulturous eyes. It’s not thatI would wish that any of the peoplewould be hurt; but anticipation anduncertainty is certainly causefor excitement.To the people of Kishiwada, thisfestival is the most important day of theyear. In fact, their calendars start andfinish in September to coincide withthe festival.As the sun goes down you can feelthe festival dropping a few gears.
