Guwahati is a fast grow<strong>in</strong>g premier city. It is the gateway of theNortheastern states of India and a pr<strong>in</strong>cipal center of socio cultural, political, and <strong>in</strong>dustrial,trade and commerce of the entire region. The transportation system should m<strong>in</strong>imize disturbances to the topography of the landand to present usage patterns The selected transportation system should fit <strong>in</strong>to the ambience of the site and should besuch as to elicit a respectful awareness of the tourism potential of the region. Cultural attitudes of the people who are to use the system should be considered dur<strong>in</strong>g thedesign phase to ensure that the system implemented fits with their sense of religious andhistorical appropriateness. It is necessary to ensure that all passengers <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g handicapped persons can behandled comfortably and securely. M<strong>in</strong>imum support facilities will be required for security, fire protection, and evacuation<strong>in</strong> case of emergency.Various transportation technology alternatives were exam<strong>in</strong>ed and the constra<strong>in</strong>ts and thechallenges thrown by the mighty river excluded the use of alternatives like new roadway,railway, monorail, and m<strong>in</strong>i rail.
