Students areexpected to become familiar withUniversity policies and procedures, andto assume responsibility for abiding bythem. Failure to do so does not constitutewaiver. Enrollment implies that studentsunderstand and accept the obligationto comply with University regulationsand procedures and that they willendeavor to meet the academic standardsof UM-Presque Isle. For specific information,consult the Student Handbook,available in the Student Affairs Office,and other appropriate materials.Individual faculty members determinethe attendance policy for each course.However students are expected to arrivepunctually and to attend all classes. Ifpossible, any necessary absences should bediscussed with the professor beforehand.Any work missed must be satisfactorilycompleted. Behavior that detracts fromthe classroom learning environment –including excessive absences – can resultin removal from a class or administrativewithdrawal from the course.Family Educational Rightsand Privacy Act of 1974The University of Maine at PresqueIsle subscribes to the Family EducationalRights and Privacy Act of 1974. The purposeof the Act is to protect the privacyof education records, to establish therights of students to inspect and reviewtheir education records, and to provideguidelines for the correction of inaccurateor misleading data through informaland formal hearings. Students also havethe right to file complaints with theFamily Educational Rights and PrivacyAct Office (FERPA) covering allegedfailures by the institution to complywith the Act.Local policy explains in detail the procedureto be used by the institution forcompliance with the provisions of theAct. A copy of the policy can beobtained in the Office of the Registrar.Questions concerning the Family EducationalRights and Privacy Act may bereferred to the Office of the Registrar.Maine State ImmunizationLaw for Post SecondaryEducationMaine State law requires that all studentswho are enrolled full-time or parttimein a degree program or who are takingat least 12 credits through theContinuing Education Department showproof of immunity to the following infectiousdiseases: measles (rubeola), rubella(German measles), mumps, tetanus anddiphtheria. The University is not allowedto permit any such student to be enrolledor to attend classes without a certificate ofimmunization or other evidence ofimmunity. The presentation of acceptableproof of immunization or immunitymust be made prior to a students attendanceat class or participation in otheractivities conducted by the University.Certificate of ImmunizationStudents must present certification ofimmunization or proof of immunitywhich indicate the following:1. Diphtheria and tetanus vaccinegiven within the past 10 years. If atetanus shot only has been given withinthe past 5 years, the student may be temporarilyexempt from the diphtheriarequirement.2. Two doses of measles vaccine givenafter the first birthday with live vaccine.Vaccines given after 1968 use live vaccine.If the vaccine was given before1968, the type of vaccine must be indicated.“LIVE VACCINE” is acceptable.“UNSPECIFIED VACCINE” is unacceptableand the student will need to be reimmunizedor show proof of immunitythrough laboratory bloodwork called atitre.3. Two doses of rubella vaccine givenafter the first birthday,4. Two doses of mumps vaccine givenafter the first birthday.Proof of ImmunityA photocopy of the following is acceptableas proof of immunity:✓ School immunization/health recordsigned by school nurse or physician.✓ Immunization record from yourphysician, nurse practitioner, or physiciansassistant or other professionalhealth care provider.✓ U.S. Military immunization record.✓ Laboratory evidence of immunity(titres) to rubeola, rubella, and mumps ifimmunization records are not available.All records must be signed by the physicianor nurse who administered thevaccine. Please do not submit originalrecords as immunization records will bekept on file and not returned.
