a c a d e m i c i n f o r m a t i o nAthletic Training Education Program RequirementsThe University of Maine at Presque Isle Athletic TrainingEducation Program is a competitive admissions programhoused in the College of Professional Programs. Currently, studentsare enrolled to the University designated as AthleticTraining Majors, but are not admitted to the program until thespring of their sophomore year.The Athletic Training Education program includes a GeneralEducation Curriculum, subject area emphasis, and a professionalsequence of methodology and clinical experiences. TheGeneral Education Curriculum provides students with a broadfoundation in the liberal arts and sciences. The subject emphasisarea involves an in-depth study of the athletic training disciplineand coordination of clinical experiences with variouspopulations and settings.Students are permitted to participate in one intercollegiateathletic sport per year during their program admission; however,they must manage and fulfill the clinical demands of theprogram. Students who wish to participate in intercollegiateathletics while in the Program should contact the ProgramDirector.Students are responsible for providing their own transportationto off-site clinical experiences.Program AdmissionIn the fall of the student’s sophomore year a pre-professionalcandidacy period is served, consisting of directed observationsin various allied health settings (50 hours). At completion ofthe candidacy period, the student receives a formal interviewfrom members of the athletic training staff, teaching faculty,and administration for determination of admission. The followingcriteria are utilized for the admission and selectionprocess:✓ candidates must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or greater;✓ the following courses must be completed with a grade ‘C’ orhigher during the pre-professional phase: HPR 101, HPR 101L,PHE 244, PHE 340, BIO 161, BIO 161L;✓ completion of Candidacy Application Packet;✓ evaluation of clinical observation performance;✓ evaluation of references and;✓ compliance with all required policies and procedures.All items will be evaluated by the selection committee andapplicants placed in rank order based on the above criteria. Thetop ranking applicants will be offered admission to the programbased on available positions. Even though applicants maymeet all selection criteria, they may still be denied admissionbased on rank order. Students are permitted to apply twice tothe program. Technical standards for admission can be foundin the program’s Policy and Procedure Manual.Transfer StudentsTransfer students are expected to fulfill all prerequisite coursework and admission/selection criteria as other non-transfer students.Previous athletic training course work will not be accepted.Professional Standing in the AthleticTraining Education ProgramIn order for students to pass through the Athletic TrainingEducation Program, students must complete five clinical proficiencylevels over a minimum period of two and half years.The clinical education component involves the acquisition andpractice of entry-level athletic training clinical proficiency skillsand psychomotor competencies through clinical educationcourse work. The field experience encompasses an opportunityfor the student to apply these proficiencies experientially to theactive population under the direct supervision of a CertifiedAthletic Trainer / Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI) in anapproved clinical environment (i.e., the athletic training room,practice/game coverage, high school, physical therapy clinics,etc.).Students are eligible to enter the clinical education programafter successful completion of their pre-professional phase (initialthree semesters) and admission into the Athletic TrainingEducation Program. The student will be required to do the followingin order to progress to the next clinical level:✓ complete appropriate clinical proficiency skills satisfactorilyfor the designated clinical level;✓ satisfactorily pass the final practical exam for the assignedclinical level;✓ possess a satisfactory mid-term and final overall clinicalassessment performance and;✓ maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater and obtain a “C”in athletic training emphasis courses.Accreditation StatusThe program received initial national accreditation status inOctober 2003 from the Commission on Accreditation of AlliedHealth Education Programs (CAAHEP). We are currentlyaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation of AthleticTraining Education (CAATE).
