MonadjenAssociate ProfessorUNISWA Appoints Pro-Vice ChancellorThe University Council appointed ProfessorVictor Smart Bafana Mtetwa as Pro-ViceChancellor of the University of Swaziland witheffect from 2 November 2006.Professor Mtetwa, a renownedscholar of physicalchemistry and environmentalscience andformer Dean of Science,joined the University ofSwaziland in 1976 as aTeaching Assistant. He dida Bachelor of Science degreeat the University ofProf. V.S.B. MtetwaPro-Vice Chancellor Botswana, Lesotho andSwaziland and a Doctor of Philosophy (D. Phil.) at theUniversity of Oxford in the United Kingdom.Professor Mtetwa rose through the ranks and servedas Head of the Chemistry Department from 1984 to1992 and achieved the position of Senior Lecturer in1991. He was promoted to the position of AssociateProfessor in 1995 and to Full Professor in 2002. He isone of three Swazi academics that have reached therank of full professorship at the University of Swaziland.Apart from making advances in his academic career,Professor Mtetwa has served with commitment in almostall the administrative and governing structures of theUniversity. He has served on University committeessuch as the Council, Senate, Finance Committee, AcademicPlanning Committee, Non-Academic staff committeeand Academic and Administrative Staff PromotionsCommittee to name but a few.Professor Mtetwa has been a member of professionalorganisations such as the British Crystallographic Association,the American Chemical Society and the RoyalSwaziland Society of Science and Technology. Nationally,he has served in various committees includingNational Energy Management Committee, the NationalSolid Wastes Management Committee and is Presidentof the Royal Swaziland Society of Science and Technology.Internationally, he has served as the Sub-RegionalSubject Editor (Chemistry) of the African Journal ofScience and Technology, a member of the Organisationof the Prohibition of Chemicals Weapons ConfidentialityCommission, a member of the Bristol Myers Squibb –Secure the Future Programme – Technical AdvisoryCommittee and a member of the Southern AfricanRegional Universities Association Science and TechnologyWorking Group.
