District Report Card: Included in this newsletter is the
Gibbon Public Schools Annual Report along with the district’s
results on the State Report Card. The annual report is
a requirement of the Accreditation Standards of the Nebraska
Department of Education. The State Report Card is part of
the state accountability system whereby patrons can learn how
their school district is rated on the quality of assessments it
uses to measure student learning and how their students are
performing. The purpose of this accountability system is to
help schools improve. For more detailed information on the
State Report Card you might want to check the web site: http://
reportcard.nde.state.ne.us/ I encourage you to take some time
to review the material in these reports. Should you find that
you would like further information, please feel free to call the
school office at 468-6555.
High School News
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held in February, and I
look forward to seeing you here. The conferences will be held
during the 6 th week of the semester, so teachers will have plenty
of student work to show you. Please take the time to ask your
student’s teachers some important questions such as:
“Is my student working to his/her full potential?”
“Is my student doing what is expected by you?”
“What can I do at home to reinforce your lessons?”
When parents and teachers work together, students benefit.
If you have not yet logged on to PowerSchool to view your
student’s grades, please stop in the office or the library to get
instructions on how to do so. Having access to your student’s
assignments and grades can be a great help in keeping your
student on track.
Over the past few months, concerns have arisen about middle
school discipline. Parent complaints have come to the office
regarding bullying. At the recent Principal Advisory Committee
meeting, students’ disrespect was mentioned. One of the district
goals is to improve student behavior. I am in the process of
planning a tour of a neighboring school that follows a Positive
Behavior Support program. I plan to take several teachers with
me so that we can learn how to implement a similar program at
Gibbon High School. We currently have a modified Positive
Behavior Support program with our discipline points and the
Zero Point Party. We want something more immediate that
can be utilized in each classroom. We will be discussing this
over the course of this year, with an implementation date of
next school year.
February is full of snow, clouds, and feelings of being deep
into the semester. Sometimes this can be overwhelming and
routine tasks can seem like a burden. Help your family recharge
your batteries. Challenge your students with a snow sculpture
contest. Turn on the music and ask your students to show you
the latest dance moves. Read aloud and snuggle next to the fireplace
(wood-burning or electric). Bake your own pizza. Take
photos of each family member and edit them on the computer
to create funny faces. In other words, enjoy your children; we
do. We get them for 7 ½ hours a day, leaving you with only
4 ½ good, awake hours. Make sure your time is quality time.
Auditions for the
Gibbon Area Community Play
Attention potential actors and actresses. I would like to invite you to audition for the Gibbon area community play to be held
March 26 th and 27 th . The play titled, “Mind Over Matt”, is a comedy by Scott Haan.
Ever argue with yourself? Ever said “I don’t know what got into me?” This is the story of Matthew Lane. Matt is a successful
illustrator with a couple of deadlines and several squabbling inner personalities who do weird and wonderful things. As Matt
tries to gather up enough nerve to ask out the girl of his dreams, Matt’s egos, who all have their own hang-ups, lead him in one
too many directions. When Matt’s overworked boss comes to believe that Matt has a crush on her, the conflicted egos manage
to make a bad situation much, much worse.
The cast of characters calls for six men and five women and a few extras. Auditions for “Mind Over Matt” will be held Wednesday,
February 2 nd from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday, February 6 th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will also be needing
crew members to help with set construction, lighting, and sound, so if behind the scenes is more your style, please be sure to
come to the auditions and let me know.
If you have any questions please contact me, Michael Kenton at mwk@nctc.net or call 308-468-5588 or 308-216-0373.
Drill Team Tryouts
Scheduled
A date has been set for the annual drill team tryouts. Practice
for tryouts will begin on March 14th at 6:30 p.m. starting
with a short meeting. Practice schedules will be handed out
at that time. Tryouts will be held on March 29th at 7:00 p.m.
All interested candidates should report on the 14th for
instructions on requirements to try out. We are looking
forward to seeing you at tryouts!
Reading Mania Hits
Second Grade Students!
Second grade students in Mrs. Rasmussen’s
class have been “stretching” their brains and
“increasing” their vocabulary this year! At
this time they have read 1,598 books, breaking last year’s
end of the year total already! Mrs. Turner rewarded their
efforts with a pizza party for the entire class. Mrs. Turner
also congratulated Mrs. Rasmussen on her encouragement
of reading practice by her students. We are very proud of all
your efforts in this very important area.
Jump Rope for Heart
Mr. Wendell
Monday, Jan. 17 th was kickoff day for the Gibbon Elementary
Schools participation in “Jump Rope for Heart”. This
year’s theme is “Be a Heart Hero” and grades 3 through 6
will be taking part as part of the physical education program
under the direction of Mr. Wendell. Students are asked to
solicit sponsors to make a donation to the American Heart
Association. In addition to collecting donations the students
will be learning about heart disease, and the importance fitness,
diet, and lifestyle choices have in leading a heart healthy
lifestyle. Student participation in the fundraising is not mandatory,
all donations are tax deductible, and all money raised
will be used by the American Heart Association for research
and medical advancement. February is “Heart Month” so
our program will culminate on Feb. 10, 2011, with a special
activity day and the handing in of the donation packets. If
you have any questions, you may contact Mr. Wendell at the
school at extension 185 or talk to your student’s classroom
teacher. Thank You All from the bottom of our “HEARTS”.

FBLA
Mrs. Stroh
The Gibbon FBLA has been working hard doing many
community service projects throughout the fall and Christmas
seasons. One particular community service project has
been spearheaded by Tessa Van Matre, Senior Class Representative.
Tessa has organized and facilitated events at the
Good Samaritan Hearthside Cottage assisted living center
in Gibbon during the months of November and December.
We participated with the residents in crafts, playing games,
and fellowship.
The Gibbon middle school wrestling team began their
season in early October and completed their season just
before Christmas vacation. Wrestling is one of four sports
offered to all middle school boys here at Gibbon. Our 7 th
and 8 th grade boys compete in football and wrestling before
Christmas and continue with basketball and track during the
second semester of the school year.
The middle school wrestlers started this season’s
competition by hosting the twenty-two team Gibbon
Open Tournament. Over 270 wrestlers participated in this
meet. They traveled to Kearney Sunrise for a twelve team
tournament and to Walnut Middle School in Grand Island for
Middle School Wrestling
Coach Wietjes
a fifteen team tournament, all before Thanksgiving vacation.
After Thanksgiving they participated in two quadrangular
meets and two tournaments, finishing their season at the
Lexington Invite.
Wrestling for Gibbon’s team this season were: Flo Carr,
Levi Kautz, Zach Lopez, Gareth Stroh, Coltin Brown, Jose
Presidential Fitness Testing Completed
Students in the Physical Education classes recently completed
testing for the Presidential Fitness Test. This test was designed
by the President’s Fitness Council to check the fitness level of our
students nationwide.
The students are grouped by their age as they complete five
fitness categories. The categories are mile run, flexibility, shuttle
run, sit-ups, and pull-ups or flexed arm hang. This year students
may substitute pushups for the pull-ups.
The shuttle run is completed by running 30 feet to pick up an
object, returning, and then going again a second time. This test
measures quickness, agility, and speed. The sit-ups are completed
by doing sit-ups for one minute. The flexibility test is done by sitting
on the floor with your feet extended out touching our stretch
board. You stretch out your arms and hold for three seconds. A
Exponent Properties and
Polynomial Operations
The Algebra II students are using exponent properties to
evaluate expressions. The properties are product of powers,
power of a power, power of a product, negative exponent, zero
exponents, quotient of powers, and power of a quotient. The
students are also learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and
divide polynomials. To practice these properties and operations,
the students can go to the following website: www.coolmath.
com. This website provides tutorials, practice, and games
emphasizing these concepts. Next, the students will be using
these properties and operations to solve polynomials.
Fall 2010-2011
score of zero means you were able to touch to your toes. A positive
number means you could reach further than your toes. The
pull-up test measures upper body strength. In order to get to the
Presidential level you must be able to do pull-ups. If you can’t,
you can select the flexed-arm hang. You hold onto the bar and keep
your chin above the bar as long as you can.
There are two levels of fitness. The Presidential level is for
students who score in the top 15% nationwide. The next level
is the National level. This level marks students who would be in
the top 50%.
Congratulations to these individuals earning the awards during
the fall 2010 and spring 2011 testing periods.
HAL Takes Flight
Mrs. Brown
For the second quarter, the Gibbon Elementary High Ability
Program studied the science of flight. First, they researched
what makes flight possible with a computer tutorial developed
by NASA scientists. During this phase they studied lift, thrust,
and drag. They also learned that to achieve flight, you must
get a balance of these things. Next, they worked in groups
to design a craft made of everyday materials that would fly.
At the end of the quarter all of the groups had a contest to
see which craft would fly the farthest. Each group had three
flights, and the average was taken to determine the winner.
All of the students had a great time and learned that there is
a lot of science involved if you want to get off of the ground!
Robotics
Mrs. Stroh
Middle school students from the 8 th grade Technology class
attended a Robotics Workshop at the Southeast Community
College-Milford Campus on December 8, 2010. Eighteen
students participated in touring the electronics department at
SCC-Milford and then began the task of building a remotecontrolled
robotic machine. All student teams successfully
read their mechanical drawings and instruction manuals to
build their own robots. The instructor, Bob Redler, also
provided lunch and a Robotics t-shirt as we ended our day
at SCC-Milford. Sarah Van Ert commented on her experience,
“I thought it was a great learning experience, fun and
educational all at the same time.” Jayde Hessler said, “I
think it was inspirational to individuals who wanted to go
into particular fields.”

Vocal Music News
ELEMENTARY MUSIC:
2nd Graders really loved their unit on “Trash Can Bands!”
My room was full of awesome homemade guitars, maracas,
shakers and all sorts of drums. It concluded with a “Trash Can
Band” program at noon on January 26th, followed by a trip to
the Good Samaritan Rest Home to perform for our friends there.
3rd Graders are preparing several patriotic songs for their
annual “President’s Day Program” on Monday, February 21st
at 2:00 p.m. in the auditorium.
4th Graders are working hard on their recorders again. A
couple of our favorite songs are “Beethoven’s 9th Symphony”
and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” March 16th will be their
Recorder Recital.
6th Graders are working on their annual composer reports and
presentations. They are due the 2nd week in February. They
found out that not all composers are 400 years old. Check out
John Williams, he is really cool!
MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR:
They had a GREAT time at Henderson-Heartland M.S. Choral
Festival in Henderson on Friday, January 28th. It included 12
6th Graders. It is an event that the students look forward to
every year! I don’t know if it is the singing they like best OR
the food, other school kids and bus ride. What do you think?
On Saturday, February 19th at Grand Island Central
Catholic, 10 students will be participating in “Singing Youth
of Nebraska!” Each school in Nebraska can select between
4-10 7th-9th grade students to participate. It is a full day of
rehearsals, concluding with a concert at 4:00 p.m. Students
Mrs. Sinnard
from Gibbon are Blake Brown, Logan Giddings, Genesis Grado,
Aubrey High, Nisha Oltman, Madisen Peterson, Clint Richards,
from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., your students will be participating in
Nebraska’s pilot version of the state writing test (NeSA-W).
Traditionally, the juniors have completed this testing with paper
and pencil in two days. However, the structure will be changed
this year to a one-day, 90-minute format.
I encourage you to be sure your students are well prepared
for this important test. In school, they are working to have the
standard essay format so clearly engrained in their thinking that
the form will be natural – all they will have to do is provide
their own convincing ideas of persuasion.
At home, students need to prepare as well. Before the test,
they will need to get a good night’s sleep. Turn off the Wii, turn
off the TV, turn off the computer, turn off the cd player, store
the cell phone in your kitchen, and send those kids to bed at
10:00! Students this age work best on at least 8 hours of sleep.
The morning of the test, be sure they eat a healthy breakfast
including grains, dairy, and fruits, with a little protein added
for sustainability. They will need to be in school, ready to go,
with their brains on full power. A good night’s rest and a good
breakfast will assist them in reaching that goal.
Later in February, I will be attending a two-day analytic scoring
workshop, taking the juniors’ papers with me to be scored.
Names will not be included, thus identities will be confidential.
Data gathered will be used to drive future class instruction,
which can only help our students achieve more.
I look forward to seeing our juniors take advantage of this
opportunity to exhibit their best writing skills.
State Income Tax Return
Public school district data is very important in the distribution of state income tax dollars that come back to the school district in which
you reside. Make sure you follow the directions on your Nebraska State Income Tax return and list “Buffalo County District No. 2”
as the school district that you reside. If you have any questions please contact the Superintendent’s office at 468-6555 or the Nebraska
Department of Revenue.

Hello Band Enthusiasts,
Half the year is behind us and only one scheduled pep
band gig remains for February 8th! Honor band season is in
full swing and contest is around the corner. The sad news in
band world is that most who auditioned for honor bands to
this point have not been selected. On the happier side, auditioning
is such a great preparation for future successes in job
interviews and work ethic! A special mention of thanks to all
of those who put in the work to audition and we wish them
better luck next year. On the phenomenal side, percussionist
Aaron Avitia auditioned for
several honor bands and was
selected to participate in the
UNO BOCH honor festival
in Omaha. The UNO honor
band is a great experience
and an exceptional honor for
anyone to achieve. Gibbon
should be especially proud
of Aaron to make it into the
highly competitive percussion ranks! Aaron will have the
honor of playing many of the most crucial percussion parts
during the festival. He will have an experience he will never
forget and should be very proud of his hard work and accomplishments
as I am of him. The final two honor bands
still awaiting results are the Class “C” All-State band held
in Kearney and the LouPlatte Honor band which is hosted
in Loup City this year.
Band News
7th/8th band is excited that Sarah VanErt, alto sax, and Aubrey
High, clarinet, have re-joined band after brief absences.
Both are doing a fine job of catching up and are already
adding extra good sounds to the middle school band which
is helping the band continue to grow as a musical ensemble.
Sixth grade band is in the thick of racing for the honor
of “Band Hero”. Each week is like the video game where
there is a series of challenges they must play to increase
their score. The winner will be crowned during the awards
ceremony in May.
Our incredible 5th grade band students are chalking up both
skill and bonus points as they strive to reach their potential
trying to be the “Hero” of their class. Many are choosing to
and enjoying to come in after school for additional help! Best
of all are a group that I have labeled the “practice royalty”.
These fine, young, responsible kids come in extra almost
every day to hone their band music reading and playing skills!
Congratulations to all students who have taken the extra
time to invest in their talent and craft! Only those involved
can really relate to the actual time it takes to be great!
Until Next Time
The Band Guy
PBiS Team Talk
The PBiS team has been busy reviewing school expectations with the students. After Christmas break, the team conducted
“Expectation Stations”, where students go to all areas of the school to review the rules of each area. This seems to help
students remember their expectations, so they can behave accordingly in every area of the school. Teachers have seen a
difference in our student behavior due to our implemented practices. Good student behavior is crucial to academic success
in school. Please visit with your child about their expectations at school. This will help reinforce those good behaviors.
Welcome to 2011!
February is Dental Health Month so I just wanted to remind
you that good dental care is important to your child’s health.
Studies have shown that people who have good dental health
have a decreased occurrence of influenza..
The tooth brushing program is up and running for the elementary
students.
New toothbrushes were distributed to the students when
they returned from Christmas break to follow the guidelines
of changing our toothbrushes every 3 months. If you have any
questions about the tooth brushing program please call or email
me at the school.
The walking program is in full swing, as the students walk
the distance from Gibbon, NE, to Gibbon, MN. Last year, students
“walked” to the Gibbon River in Yellowstone National
Park. Walking is such good exercise for students. They walk
in the gym after they eat breakfast and before they go to class.
What a great way to start the day! Our winners of the most
miles walked before Christmas break were Mrs. Danielson’s
kindergarten class, and the student with the most miles was
Taylor Rivera, walking 40 miles.
Ask your students about the fun we have every Friday morning
getting our day started with some fun exercising in the
gym. Before the students go to their classroom, we do a few
Nurse’s News
Nurse Kay
stretches and then exercise to invigorating music. We may do
things like the Chicken Dance or the Hokey Pokey. Encourage
your students to get 60 minutes of exercise every day. The
Friday morning program is just on the elementary side of the
school, but do encourage your middle school and high school
to get their 60 minutes.
Since February is Heart Healthy month, think about ways to
improve your heart health and your family’s heart health. To
accomplish this, eat a healthy diet including some of the Heart
Association’s great recipe ideas on their web site. Encourage
students to cut back on carbonated drinks, drink 6 to 8 glasses
of water a day, eat 5 servings of vegetables and fruits, avoid
fried foods, maintain a healthy weight, eat meals together as a
family with the TV off, and get 8 hours of sleep a night.
I also want you to be aware that when your students return to
school next year they have to have had two Varicella (Chicken
Pox) vaccinations. I also need a written statement that they
had the disease if they have not had the vaccinations. I will be
sending you a letter to inform you of the status of your child’s
immunizations, but if for some reason you do not get a letter
please contact me.
Happy Valentines Day!
Nurse Kay
Principal’s Advisory Committee
Ms. Miller
The first meeting of the Principal’s Advisory Committee (PAC) was held on January 17. A small group of parents learned the
committee’s purpose, to serve as a liaison between the school and the community. Monthly meetings were scheduled for the
third Monday of each month.
The PAC is: The PAC is not:
A vehicle for communication An elite club
A place for presentations by teachers A decision making body
A hub for requests by the community A gripe session
A starting point for new ideas A dictating group
An ending point for rumors An airing of emotional opinions
A group of resident leaders A waste of time
A parent brought up two concerns, 1) middle school discipline, and 2) the high number of basketball games. Ms. Miller,
Principal, stated that she would address these issues at the next meeting.
The committee is open to membership of parents, teachers, students, and residents. Interested persons may attend the next
meeting on February 21 at 6:30 in the high school library.
February is upon us and it is a month for the BIA to say “THANK
YOU” to all the parents, family members, teachers and students
that helped support the BIA’s many activities that closed out
2010 and kicked off 2011. Without the generosity of your time,
talents and fundraising support our organization wouldn’t be able
to give back to our teachers and students. However, our work
isn’t done. The BIA is gearing up for a busy spring and it is our
hope that you will continue to support our school through the
following activities:
Parent/Teacher Conferences: On February 7 th we kick off the
final parent-teacher conferences of the year and it is a great
time to show the teachers our appreciation with a variety of
treats. The BIA is looking for volunteers to provide tasty food
for the conference times, February 7 (1:00 to 5:30 p.m.) and
February 9 (4:00 to 7:30 p.m.). Items can be delivered directly
to the elementary office the day of conferences. If you are
willing to provide a treat or if you have any questions please feel
free to contact Kelly White at ckwhite@nctc.net or Kasey Parr
at tkparr@nctc.net.
Room Parents: If you have signed up to be a room parent for
your child’s classroom, please remember to make contact with
your teacher. It has been an important goal of the BIA to build
a positive rapport between our school’s teaching staff and the
parents. As a Room Parent you are an important piece in this
goal. Check in with your teachers, see if there is anything that
parents can do to make things easier and more successful for
the classroom as the year draws to an end.
Box Tops for Education: Are you saving Box Tops? Are you
doing your online shopping at the Box Tops Marketplace? These
are two easy ways to make money for your school. To prove
this, let’s recap Gibbon Elementary earnings since the March 1,
2010, submission deadline. Box Tops for Education has 2 annual
submission deadlines (March 1 st and December 1 st ) and 2 annual
payout dates where checks are sent to schools (April 30 th and
December 31 st ).
March 14, 2010 - 1,120 Box Tops Submitted = $112.00 earned*
May 26, 2010 - 9,490 Box Tops Submitted = $949.00 earned*
October 24, 2010 - 3,234 Box Tops Submitted = $323.40 earned*
December 21, 2010 - 1,875 Box Tops Submitted = $187.50 earned*
This is over $1,500 that the simple act of clipping Box Tops
has earned for our school.
*These totals can be viewed on the Box Tops for Education
Website.
Box Tops for Education makes it easy with hundreds of products
sporting Box Tops, offering coupons and online shopping.
Watch for upcoming Box Top Collections opportunities. In
February a Valentine’s Day collection sheet will be sent home
with students with a deadline of February 14 th (so that they can
be submitted by the March 1 st deadline) and our big collection
event is the April Box Top Classroom Challenge where classes
can earn ice cream parties and bonuses for their teachers.
Questions regarding the Box Tops For Education Program at
Gibbon Elementary can be directed to Kasey Parr, Box Tops
Coordinator at tkparr@nctc.net.
Campbell’s Soup Labels: Collecting soup labels is another way
to help our school earn supplies. So dig through your cupboards
and strip those Campbell’s, Pepperidge Farm, Franco American,
Spaghettios, Swanson, V8 and Prego products of their labels (have
BIA News
Kasey Parr
a Sharpie pen ready to write what is inside the can) then send
to school with your student or deposit them in the collection bin
in the elementary office. Please remember to include the UPC
symbol from the package. Campbell’s will no longer accept the
front portion of the label. If you have any questions regarding
Soup Labels for Education contact coordinator, Michele Clark
at kmclark2k@yahoo.com or 216-0395.
Finally, it is time to talk about the big event of the spring…
The BIA Spring Carnival! The snow is on the ground and spring
isn’t even in sight but the planning must begin for the 3 rd Annual
Spring Carnival. This is an event that takes extensive planning and
many volunteer hours. Volunteers are needed to help with this
planning. If you are interested in being a part of this successful
event or if you have great ideas to share, please join us at our
first planning meeting on Monday, March 7 th at 6:30 p.m. in the
school commons area.
Now to recap December events (since I missed January’s
newsletter)…
Treats for Troops: Once again, an extensive amount of treats
was collected for our troops. Several boxes were mailed to
service personnel overseas and serving in the states. This small
gesture of appreciation on behalf of Gibbon Elementary goes a
long way to warm the hearts of our soldiers. Thank you for your
support on this annual project.
Christmas Program Reception: The call went out to you, the
parents and families of our students, to support the Christmas
program reception and you answered it! Hundreds upon hundreds
of cookies and treats showed up to be enjoyed by all during a
wonderful evening of children’s music. Thanks to the Junior High
students that helped serve the cookies and kept things running
smoothly while parent volunteers watched their children perform.
A special “thank you” is extended to Kim Wilkens for taking on
the coordination of this event.
Christmas Program DVD’s: The Christmas Program was special
this year, filled with a great variety of holiday music and we have
a wonderful DVD to show for it. Glen and Nancy Kollars along
with Amity Kollars put together a very nice DVD of the program.
The BIA sold 65 copies of the DVD. The profits from the DVD
sale go to support our Treats for Troops campaign.
Christmas Classroom Parties: This year the holiday break
kicked off with something new. In recent years students
and staff have celebrated the last day of school before the
Christmas break with a movie morning, which included a popcorn
snack and prizes from the BIA. That shifted to individual
classroom parties coordinated by the teachers and their room
parents. The classroom parties were a success! Thank you to
the parents that helped host, provided snacks, drinks and other
treats for classroom enjoyment.
Holiday Pie Sales: This is a quick and easy fundraiser for the
BIA, which also provides tasty Sarah Lee pies. This year’s holiday
pie sales helped earn over $200. The goal is for the funds raised
during the pie sales to be pumped back into the classroom to help
get teachers some wish list items like Mr. McLaughlin’s Word
Family Lacers & Word Family Picture Wheels for his first grade
class. Watch for a spring holiday pie flyer.
Here’s to a successful second half of the school year for our
students and staff!

Spring Student-Led Conferences
Middle School Teachers
Parent teacher conference time is fast approaching and the Gibbon Middle School will use the student-led conference format.
Parents and guardians of middle school students should have received a letter to schedule a conference on either February 7 th or
February 9 th . During a student-led conference, the student directs the conference and takes ownership of his/her academic success.
A portfolio that contains sample assignments, quizzes, tests, and projects from every class will be examined. Since parent
guidance and support is an essential part of academic success, we look forward to seeing everyone at conferences.

ACT
(American College Test)
The ACT is a college entrance test that students may choose to take. This test is usually taken during the junior or senior
year of high school. There were 24 students who took the ACT. When looking at the results, the composite score for the
school (22.2) was slightly above the state average (22.1). Scores are stable from year to year.
In the spring, we administer a norm-referenced test called Terra Nova. The scores given in this report compare the
average achievement of students at Gibbon Public Schools with other students in the nation as a whole. The results for each
class are reported in NCE on a scale from 1 to 99. Scores are rounded to the nearest whole number. A score of 50 means
an average score.
The Terra Nova Test publishers state: “Test scores represent achievement in particular areas at only one particular time and
must be reviewed together with the student’s actual classroom work and other factors. It is important to understand that the
information produced by testing is only one of the many variables that contribute to improved learning. The test measures
the basic content and skills that are most common to curricula throughout the country. It cannot possibly measure, nor should
it attempt to measure, the full curriculum of a particular classroom, school, or district.”

Accountability
Federal Accountability Continuous Progress: Federal Accountability under NCLB requires a decision to be made for
all schools and districts after every year to determine progress. Additionally a two year decision is required about progress.
That two year decision is called “AYP Status Decision”. A district or building may meet one year’s progress but not the
other. Or a district might make progress in one subject or grade level, but not the other. The two year “AYP Status Decision”
at both the building and district levels will be described with one of the following:
· MET: A building or district has met all target goals for two consecutive years.
· NOT MET: A building or district has either met all of the indicators in one of the two years, but not both, or the district
or building missed indicators in different subject areas or grade levels during the two years.
· NOT MET, IMPROVEMENT SHOWN: A building or district might have not met AYP in the previous school year
but has made improvement and met AYP in the current school year.
· NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: a NOT MET for two consecutive years in the same subject areas at all grade levels present.
Schools and districts must meet the AYP State Goals for two consecutive years in the subject area that caused the NEEDS
IMPROVEMENT designation in order to be removed from NEEDS IMPROVEMENT status.
