GIBBON PUBLIC SCHOOLS APRIL 2010
NOTES FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Spring and the Fourth Quarter: Spring and the fourth
quarter are officially upon us. Seniors and their parents are
thinking about graduation as these students will be the first
class to do so from the new building. It has been a wonderful
year, but there are still many tasks and events prior to graduation.
I would like to encourage everyone to enjoy the spring
extracurricular events and the upcoming award nights. Dates
to highlight are the April 20 th District Music Contest Recital
at 6:30, the April 22 nd Gibbon Boys Golf Invitational and the
Ron Priebe Track Invitational, April 24 th is Prom, April 27 th
is the Gibbon Junior High Track Invite, and April 29 th is the
Fine Arts Awards Presentation. I hope you will be able to
enjoy all of these events.
Last Day of School – The published school calendar includes
extra days that can be used for making up snow days if
necessary. This year we had three days of cancelled classes,
two late starts, and one early dismissal. The final adjustments
have been made to the calendar and the last day of school
will officially be Friday, May 21 st . This will be a complete
day of classes. The staff will be spending the morning of
Monday, May 24 th as a “workday”.
State Aid and Insurance Rates – March is the month
in which districts across the state are given their state aid
numbers and new insurance premiums for the 2010-11 school
year. State aid increased slightly to $2,026,195. This number
is up by $74,246 or 3.8%. It should be noted that this number
includes $333,657 of ARRA “Stimulus” money.
Salary and insurance are the two major components within
the compensation package for staff. Salary negotiations with
the Gibbon Educational Association will begin in the next
two months. However, the district has learned that medical
insurance premiums will increase by 4.56%. This is a rather
modest increase when compared to recent years.
Event Parking Area – The graveled event parking area
located to the west of the hard-surfaced parking area has
been a challenge to the district this spring. The district
regrets the condition of this area and the inconveniences
and hardships that have been created. I would like to assure
the patrons of the district that significant time and material
(rock/gravel) have been, and will be, invested in this area
during the spring and summer seasons. It should also be
mentioned that one of the long-term goals (three to five
years) of the district is to hard-surface this area. Please look
for all of the recently developed Leadership Team Goals
within this edition of the newsletter.
Educationally Dedicated,
Larry Witt
REMINDER:
Kindergarten Registration
If your child will be five years of age on or before
October 15 th they may attend kindergarten. Please stop
by the elementary school office to register your child if
you have not already done so.
Little Smiles Pre-school
Don’t forget to register your little one for the district’s
early childhood program. Classes are held daily; a
morning session and an afternoon session. If your child
will be four years old by October 15 th he/she is eligible
to attend the grant-supported program.
The Season of Testing . . .
Mr. Dumas
The season of testing is upon us. Spring is full of the
national norm-referenced test (Terra Nova), the Nebraska
State tests for reading and math, and we have already
completed the state test in writing. The performance of our
students is used to judge our school, so it is extra important
for students to sleep well the night before the test and to
get a good breakfast each morning. As parents, you can
remind your sons/daughters of the importance of doing
their best on these measures of academic performance.
Thank you for your continued support of the students of
Gibbon Public Schools!

High School News
Dear Friends of Gibbon Public Schools:
The fourth quarter started strong, and we expect a great
finish to the 2009-10 school year. It is an honor to be associated
with the school during the first year in this building,
and it is an even greater blessing to be able to work
with the outstanding students and staff of Gibbon High
School. Thank you for finishing this first year in a strong
way in this building—as this will build a solid foundation
for great traditions yet to come.
As the weather warms, some students may be tempted
to lighten their clothing. Please remember that clothing
must meet the dress code requirements of the district
(December/January of the student handbook), which are
to dress modestly, and be aware that t-shirts are available
to those who choose to wear attire that is not compliant
with the dress code
As always, thank you for your continued support of the
school and our students.
Warmest regards,
Chad Dumas
April – An Important Data Month
This is the year – the year that the new Nebraska State
Reading Test will be given for all students in elementary
grades 3-6. Teachers have been working with students in
preparation for the new test which consists of two, one hour
sessions taken via computer. Students have had the opportunity
to take a “practice” test first to familiarize themselves
on the features of the test. During 2010-2011 the state will
add a new online math test for students to the line-up.
In addition to the new state reading test, April is also the
month for the annual Terra Nova, norm-referenced test.
Teachers will begin presenting the test to students the week
of April 12 th with completion of all test components by
April 16 th .
Parents, it is very important that your students have plenty
of rest during the testing time periods so that they will be
able to give their very best performance! If at all possible
administration and teachers ask that students not be taken
out of school during each of the above-mentioned testing
periods.
Congratulations to Brendon Altizer for winning the
Vocal Music “Notes”
March was a very busy month! Here are a few of the
highlights.
ELEMENTARY MUSIC:
4th graders had their “Recorder Recital” on Wednesday,
March 3rd, and did a very nice job!
3rd graders performed their “Trash Can Bands” on
Wednesday, March 17th, and had a great time!
6th graders worked very hard on their composer reports and
turned them in before Spring Break. They are also working
on some cool songs for their Dare Graduation on Thursday,
April 15th.
4th and 5th graders are working on a square dance unit right
now, as Mrs. Sinnard and Mrs. Tinkham (Mr. Wendell’s sub)
team teach this fun project!
Lower grades are learning more about rhythms and playing
the fun spring game of “Rhythm Baseball”!
SECONDARY VOCAL MUSIC:
On Monday, March 8th, 14 young men traveled to Hastings
College to participate in the “Youth in Harmony” Barbershop
clinic and concert. They were Saul Aguilar, Flo Carr, Jacob
Cooper, Elliot Gangwish, Darren Hunnel, Dalton Jordan,
Cody McGregor, Ryan Neujahr, Quentin Rockefeller, Josh
Shafer, Alec Smallcomb, Cody Spencer, Jordan Wadkins-
Meyer and James Witt.
March 25th-28th was the Gibbon High School Musical,
“Oklahoma!” The students did a fantastic job!
Tuesday, April 20th, at 5:30 p.m. is the final Gibbon Fine
Arts Booster meeting of the year. At 6:00 p.m., immediately
following the meeting, there will be a District Music “Recital”
in the auditorium. This will feature soloists and small groups.
The recital gives the students and opportunity to perform in
by Mrs. Sinnard
front of an audience prior to Districts. The public is invited
to attend. There is no cost. Please come and support these
talented soloists.
We had great attendance at our Fine Arts Booster meetings
this year. On behalf of the Vocal Music Dept. and myself,
we would like to thank them for all their encouragement and
support throughout the year. We would also like to thank
the Gibbon Boosters for helping us purchase eight new choir
robes to be used for honor choirs.
Friday, April 23rd, at Grand Island High School is District
Music Contest. There are 14 vocal students preparing solos
this year: Saul Aguilar, Yoce Avina, Mikalah Brown, Jacob
Cooper, Elliot Gangwish, Ashley Kaestner, Amanda Majer,
barbershop ensemble, women’s ensemble, show choir and
high school choir.
Tuesday, April 27th, at 7:30 p.m. will be the Secondary
senior vocal students honored this year: Emily Case, Liz
Case, Amanda Majer and Tailer Rogers.
Arts Awards Night in the auditorium. This is for all students
and parents in art, band, choir, drama and speech.
Mark your calendars now for the Elementary School
Spring Concert, “GIBBON’S GOT TALENT!” on Monday,
May 17th. It will be K-3rd graders at 6:30 p.m. with a 15
minute break before the 4th-6th graders at 7:15 p.m. DON’T
MISS IT!
High School Counselor Captions
Mrs. Neubauer
The seniors are busy filling out scholarship applications.
The local scholarships are all due this month and available
on the school website to complete electronically, so please
remind your senior to fill them out. Just a reminder in regards
to scholarships, please make a list of scholarships the student
has been awarded and get them to me by May 1st, if possible.
This allows me to list them in the graduation program and
make sure they are announced at graduation.
I’m excited to be able to tell you about a free program
we have available called e-transcript. Students and parents
are able to place transcript orders online and have them
electronically transferred to participating colleges and
universities. This may be accessed by logging into Docufide.
com and registering. You may contact me or Mrs. Schuster
in the office for more information, or any problems you
might encounter.
Some of the juniors have been visiting with college
representatives that come to the school. This is a good time
to begin as well as plan for some possible college visits in
the summer. Also, the last ACT test date for 2009-10 is June
12 th with registration being postmarked May 7, 2010. ACT
packets may be picked up in the Counselor’s office.
The end of the year is fast approaching. I hope you take
time to enjoy the spring.

“Oklahoma!” is a Success
The musical “Oklahoma” was performed in the district’s auditorium on March 26 th , 27 th , and 28 th . The cast and crew did a
magnificent job. The musical was directed by Mrs. Peg Sinnard, with piano accompaniment by Mr. Randy Shackleton, and
choreography directed by Mr. Blake Thompson.

Students Excel at UNK Business Competition Day
Mrs. Brodine
Each year the University of Nebraska at Kearney Phi Beta
Lambda organization sponsors a Business Competition Day
with an open invitation to all schools in the area. Seventeen
schools and over 200 students attended this year’s annual
event on February 16. Thirteen students from Gibbon
competed for 6 places in each of the 17 events tested. To
participate, students are required to compete in a minimum
of two events, and no event may be repeated from year to
year. It was a successful day as Gibbon students earned
eleven places in nine events.
Planning, practicing, and preparing to win was the strategy
adopted by sophomore Lexi Giddings. For two weeks
before the big day, Lexi practiced her keyboarding skills
after school and during study hall as she keyed spreadsheets,
mail merges, and a variety of other documents. Her efforts
resulted in earning 2 nd place in Word Processing, 3 rd place
in Filing, and 5 th place in Keyboarding Speed. Giddings
said that Business Day will help her with other events in the
future as well. “It’s going to make me more confident when
I compete in other events, and I’m learning things now that
I’ll use for the rest of my life,” she noted.
For many of this year’s attendees, it was the first time
competing. After placing 4 th in the Accounting I event,
Matt Baker stated, “It was fun competing against the other
students; it showed me how I compared to other students in
Accounting and Parliamentary Procedure.” Baker added that
it is beneficial for FBLA members to attend Business Day
to prepare for State Leadership Conference in April, which
has similar events.
Students who attended were 1 st row--Kate Baker, Lexi
Giddings, Micah Stall, Amy Chen,
2 nd row--Melissa Baker, Kylie Cudaback, Nicole Schuster,
Morgan Kroll, Tessa Van Matre, and 3 rd row-- Patrick
Schuster, Matt Baker, Cody McGregor, and Jacob Vega. The
students were sponsored by Mrs. Brodine, Mrs. Reinertson,
and student teacher Mrs. Jacobs.
“I Want to
Learn English”…
That was the comment administration has been hearing
around the community. With funding from the newly
received 21 st Century Learning Community Grant, the
Gibbon district is now able to offer such a class to interested
parents and patrons. The first class was held
March 17 th and there were 36 attendees! Nery Flores
and Edna Rosario-Girona are instructing the group
which consists of Level One English and Level Two
English. Classes are being held each week on Mondays
and Wednesdays.
J-Team Spring Blood
Drive Nets 34 Units!
Ms. Williams
Forty young people and community members came forward
March 16 th to bare their arms for the semi-annual J-Team
Blood Drive. Each spring and fall, the journalism students
pool their food supplies, clear out a room, and host the Red
Cross to contribute to the blood supply so badly needed in
America. We thank everyone who donated in some way,
shape, or form: by giving blood, by donating food, by giving
time to help to run the drive, or by exchanging a classroom
for the day in order for the drive to be held at school. The 34
units you gave may save up to 102 lives! Thank you!

Nurse’s News
Spring has finally come, which means we are getting ready for
the end of this year and the beginning of the next school year.
For students who will be going into kindergarten or the
7 th grade, the immunization requirements have changed
but the vision requirements remain the same as last year.
Kindergartners and 7th grade students need to have their
vision checked by a doctor of optometry or ophthalmology
before school starts next fall. If it is a financial difficulty for
the student to get an eye exam, Vision Support Program gift
certificates are available to you from this office. Also, look
closely on the bottom of the physical form. The form has
an area you are required to complete, giving the date that the
student last saw the dentist.
Some relatively new vaccinations are available to students
also, but at this time are not required. The Gardasil vaccine is
for girls ages 12—26 years of age to prevent cervical cancer
that can be caused by HPV (Human Papillomavirus). The
vaccine consists of 3 shots given over a 6-month period.
Doctors’ offices, health clinics, and the Clinic of Good Health
all can provide Gardisil vaccine. Gardasil is now also available
for boys but the parent has to ask for the vaccination.
The immunization clinic cannot offer it unless the parents
ask for it.
The mantra vaccine is also recommended for prevention
of meningitis. Many doctors are giving it with the 7 th grade
physical and to students who will be going to college.
Community Action Partnership of Mid-NE is offering
school physicals for kindergarten, 7th grade, and sports on
July 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please call for appointments
at 308-865-1352 ext 143, or 1-888-209-3723 ext
The elementary is continuing with the All Recreate On
Friday and has added the Walking Club. This year the students
are trying to walk to Vancouver, BC, and back. The
Ambassadors have issued a challenge to all adults or upper
class students to participate. Mr. Wendell measured out the
distances to equal a mile and they are as follows: Elementary
Hallway (end-to-end)-6 laps: Elementary Gym-17 laps; West
door Elementary Hallway, south through music hallway,
east through commons, north Elementary Hallway, returns
to west Elementary doors-5 laps; and outside it is 4 laps
around the track.
Representatives of the Wellness Committee and I will be
attending the Action for Healthy Kids Conference on April
13, 2010, in Lincoln NE. This is open to all patrons of the
school, so if anyone is interested in attending please contact
me for details on the conference.
With the coming of spring, I will be seeing more students
who have allergies to trees, pollens, and outdoor allergens.
If your student has these allergies please send any medication
that they need to allow them to stay in school and be more
comfortable while concentrating on their schoolwork.
I hope you have a great spring and can join your children
having fun outside as the weather gets warmer. Be sure to
have children wear their sunscreen when outside and helmets
when they ride their bikes!
Math Rocks:
Celebrate Pi Day
Mrs. Rockefeller
Pi, Greek letter ( ), is the symbol for the ratio of the
circumference of a circle to its diameter. The symbol for pi
was first used in 1706 by William Jones, but was popular
after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard
Euler in 1737. The Algebra III students use the value in
their trigonometric calculations. Since pi = 3.1415926535…,
math enthusiasts celebrate Pi Day around the world on March
14 th . The Algebra III classes celebrated Pi Day on Monday,
March 15 th , because the actual Pi Day was on a Sunday. The
students enjoyed chocolate silk pie and apple pie.

Band News
Hello Fellow Band Enthusiast:
5 th or 6 th grade parents may want to log on to power school
on a weekly basis to see your child’s progress. Since the
beginning of March I have been recording a minimum of one
grade per week, in an effort to keep you informed. Each entry
has the topic which is the focus for that day in conjunction
with the skill (technique) improving exercises for the day.
The daily 5 point grade is based on punctuality, instrument
and material readiness along with participation. As always, if
you have any questions on your child’s grade or how to access
Power Grade please contact Mrs. VanMeter or myself.
The 7 th and 8 th grade band are working on both their final
2010 concert and on the show that we will play during our
Chicago band trip June 1 st through 4 th .
The high school band students marked the end of the honor
band season on March 20 th . That culmination coincided with
the annual LouPlatte Honor Band that Gibbon hosted this
year. Due to the shared rotation each school hosts this event
once each decade. There were 85 band students selected
out of the ten schools that form our LouPlatte Conference.
Adams Central has much to be proud of as they brought 37
participants. Gibbon was tied for 2 nd place with 8 participants.
The event was a day of music making and visual pleasures
as the conference art show was held in conjunction with
the Honor Band. The day ended with a concert conducted
by veteran band director Byron Braasch of Bellevue Public
Schools.
District Music Contest is April 23 rd . Both the concert band
and jazz band will be participating, I have high hopes of
placing well! In addition to the two large ensembles there will
also be individual solo and small ensemble performances by
Liz Case, clarinet; Em Case, flute; Travis Johnson, Miramba;
Ben Gillming, trombone; Cody McGregor, trombone; Alex
Steele, trumpet; Christian Steele, trumpet; Jacob Vega,
trumpet; Seth Mitchell and Jordan Gillming, alto sax; and
Jacob Cooper, snare. This year Gibbon was assigned to the
class A/B site at Grand Island Senior High. It will be an
enlightening experience for our students as well as Gibbon
spectators to have the opportunity to listen to so many larger
schools.
Look forward to seeing you soon!
Keep those kids practicing!
Sincerely,
Brian Erickson, Band Director
Prom 2010
What one day of the year does a high-school girl devote hours of time to not just hair, nails,
makeup and “the” dress What one day of the year does a high-school boy devote more than
just a “few” minutes to showering, hair combing and attire That’s right - PROM NIGHT!
Gibbon students will be donning their best on 4-24-10. So if your promenading son and/or
The Junior-Senior Prom is for Gibbon students grades 11 and 12 and their dates. No 7 th or 8 th graders will be allowed to
attend. Any date who is not a student of Gibbon Public Schools must be signed up with the sponsors of the Junior Class before
the date of the prom. The junior students attending prom must have paid for their class dues prior to prom. All attendees
may be required to be tested by a breathalyzer apparatus.
Scholastic Book Fair Huge Success!
The Scholastic Book Fair held at the elementary school March 4th and 5 th reached a new high! Students, families, and
staff purchased $6,328.17 of books. This amount qualified us for a 60% return. The 60% and some additional promotional
bonuses allowed the district to purchase $4110.76 worth of books for our school library. It is wonderful to have so many
people believe in the power of reading and the positive long-term effects for our students and children.
Gratefully,
Three Regent Recipients
Pictured, left to right, are Nicole Schuster, Josh Reinertson, and
Elizabeth Case. These students each received Regent Scholarships.
Nicole and Josh received their scholarships to attend the University
of Nebraska at Lincoln while Elizabeth received her scholarship
offer from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Gibbon Public
Schools is very proud of the entire senior class and cannot recall
another senior class that had three Regent Scholarship recipients.
Child Actors
Kearney Community Theatre
Each year the Kearney Community Theatre produces
two Academy of Children‛s Theater productions. One
production is a straight play and the second is a musical.
The straight production was Porridgegate, a charming
mystery about who really ate the 3 Bears‛ porridge. The
final production took place March 26-28. Mirror Image,
the musical, tells the story of fairy tale characters and
their fall into reality. This year‛s casts included two Gibbon
Elementary 4th graders. Samantha Mercer and Addison
Parr. The girls took part in both productions, learning valuable
theater techniques, gaining stage experience and having fun. If your child is interested
in theater Kearney Community Theatre offers wonderful opportunities to learn through
summer classes and the Academy of Children‛s Theater productions.

Did you know that eagles’ nests can be up to 2.5 meters
wide And that the Northern Cardinal is the state bird of
seven states And that when settlers came here, robins were
rare
After their visit to Rowe Sanctuary, the 3rd and 4th grade
HAL students paired up to research their favorite Nebraska
birds to find out their scientific names and life information,
as well as interesting facts such as those above. The information
and pictures are all placed on posters in the HAL
room for everyone to learn more about these birds.
The cranes have captured the attention of some of the students,
especially those who can “open my back door and
see them” as one young lady reported. I encourage you to
join your children in a trip to Rowe to climb into the viewing
blinds and watch and listen to the cranes as experts tell
you more about them. (They find thermals to carry them
through the air, so they don’t need to flap their wings so
often!) For more information, contact Keanna Leonard at
308/468-5282, or by email kleonard@nctc.net.
Had you been in class with us the past two weeks, you
would have been able to join in as we sang “We all live in a
yellow submarine!” What brought up this golden oldie Our
next project: saving the world’s oceans. In teams consisting
of an oceanographer, a marine biologist, a geologist, and an
environmental scientist, the children are going to complete
assigned missions using tests and reasoning, they will learn
to document findings, and they will have the opportunity to
explore new ideas. We’ll start with deciding which mission
to take on, first.
Students will soon be bringing home information about
summer enrichment opportunities. Grand Island Public
Schools, along with ESU 10, is coordinating once again the
S.E.E. program, or Summer Enrichment Experiences. In
June, students will have the chance to explore all sorts of
interest areas, ranging from science to math to dance. Also,
Rowe Sanctuary is offering two programs, SOAR for the
younger students, and Flying Higher for older students. All
of the programs are great opportunities; those students who
have attended in prior years are encouraging others to share
in the fun. Scholarships are available through the agencies.
No Free Ride if You Provide
Underage Drinking. Adult Consequences
Efforts are underway this prom and graduation
season to keep kids safe. These efforts are far
more successful when the community supports and
engages by reporting underage drinking parties
or suspected adults providing alcohol to minors by
calling the new, statewide underage drinking tip
line at 1-866-MUST-B-21. It’s anonymous, and it’s
the right call.
As we approach the time of year when young
people gather with friends and family to celebrate
the last day of school, graduation, and other events,
we encourage your involvement in preventing underage
alcohol use.
The Nebraska Legislature and Gov. Dave Heinemann
have shown their commitment to preventing
youth access to alcohol by passing a host liability law
that went into effect January 1, 2008. The law establishes
a legal basis for people suffering damages as
a result of a sale to a minor or providing alcohol to
a minor in a social setting.
Under the law, adults who serve or provide alcohol
to minors can be held civilly liable if that individual
harms or kills someone. Surveys of youth show that
adults are the most common place kids get alcohol.
Additionally, those caught procuring alcohol for a
minor face criminal penalties of a $1,000 fine, a year
in jail or both. Recent sentences in Nebraska have
ranged from 3 months up to the maximum, a year
in jail. There really is No Free Ride if You Provide
alcohol for minors.
Both law enforcement and elected officials have
shown that they’re serious about protecting young
lives from accessing alcohol and now it’s your turn.
Adults play a critical role in the lives of children and
it’s your involvement that will send a clear message
to young people that underage drinking is unacceptable.
If you hear of an underage drinking party, call
the tip line, 1-866-MUST-B-21. However, if you see a
party already underway, call 911 immediately.

Carnival: Spring has sprung and the BIA has
begun planning the elementary carnival. Mark your
calendars and save the May 7th date. If you are
interested in volunteering your time or talents (art
or construction) or if you would like more information
contact carnival coordinator, Liz Coulter at
jl-coulter@hotmail.com (we still need volunteers).
Can‛t help but want to contribute We are in need
of prize supplies such as 2 liter bottles of pop or
juice/lemonade, boxes of movie-style candy and bigger
prizes appropriate for kids ages kindergarten
through 6th grade.
The BIA is looking for community members and
business partners to help us with this endeavor. If
you would like to sponsor a booth, provide prizes
or provide a monetary gift to support this event
please contact Kim Wilkens at kwilkens@nctc.net
or 468-6706.
Some of the activities planned: screaming chicken
game, fortune teller, cotton candy, Blue Moon photo
booth, prize give-aways throughout the night, educational
booths, concessions and so much more. Join
us for the fun!
Box Tops for Education: The BIA‛s have challenged
each classroom to a Box Top Collection Contest
to see which classroom can collect the largest
number of Box Tops. When a classroom hits 500 Box
Tops, they will be rewarded with a party of their
choice (popcorn, nacho, root beer floats, sundaes).
The contest will run through April with the class
collecting the largest number of Box Tops receiving
an extra 15 minute recess. The winning classroom
teacher will also be awarded books to add to their
classroom library. Help your child‛s class come out on
top by sending your Box Tops to school. Remember,
contest deadline is April 30th.
Treats for Troops Update: The BIA would like
to extend a big “Thank You” to Steve VanMeter and
the Sons of the American Legion for paying for all
of our Treats for Troops boxes to be sent over seas.
With their help we were able to send 17 gift boxes
during the holiday season to service personnel with
ties to Gibbon. The American Legion‛s support and
Mr. VanMeter‛s assistance was greatly appreciated.
Also, thank you to those of you that sent “treats” to
school; without your generosity this important giving
tradition wouldn‛t have been possible.
Teacher Appreciation Luncheon: Each year the
BIA celebrates the elementary staff at Gibbon by
hosting a luncheon. This luncheon is a great opportunity
to tell the staff “thank you” for their hard
work throughout the school year. Please take the
time to bring a tasty salad or delicious dessert.
Mark your calendar for May 4th, please have
food dishes at school by 10:30 a.m.
Remember to keep collecting your Campbell‛s labels
(remember the UPC symbol) and Box Tops.
