BUFFALO HERALD
GIBBON PUBLIC SCHOOLS MAY 2011
Notes From The Superintendent
Spring is here and the flurry of activities that accompanies
this part of the school year is upon us. Keep those school
calendars handy as we enjoy the last events of the school year.
I hope to see many of you at one or more of the following
events: track meets, golf matches, musical concerts, honors
nights, graduation, and the art show.
Spanish Classroom: The district has proceeded with employment
of a full-time Spanish teacher. The past two years
students have received Spanish classes via distance learning.
This arrangement has been challenging for the students. We
are optimistic that having a classroom teacher will enhance
the learning for our students.
New Hires: To date the district has hired the following individuals
for the 2011-12 school year: Amy Woodman will be
the new Early Childhood teacher, Abby Jones will be the new
Spanish teacher, and Michelle Fries will be the new science
teacher. Brooke Scripter will be the new band teacher and
Rebecca Bartlett will be the new junior high language arts
teacher, pending board approval at its May board meeting.
The district is in the process of interviewing and offering
the secondary English Language Learner position. I am optimistic
this will be a part of the May board agenda as well.
Estimated State Aid: The district has received information
regarding potential state aid for the 2011-12 school
year. According to the modeling, the district would receive
approximately $177,000 in additional state aid. This is great
news as most districts across the state will be losing some
MAP Test Training
The entire staff was trained in MAP testing on March 30
when classes were cancelled. Teachers now have a good
understanding of what the computerized tests cover, how
the tests match Nebraska Standards, how the computer
levels the questions to each student’s ability, and how the
teachers can change their curriculum to match the students’
academic needs.
Elementary Bison Yearbook
The Elementary Bison Yearbooks are available for students at
the cost of $10.00 each. The Bison includes individual pictures of
PK-6th grade students, special events and candid photos.
of their state aid assistance. The reasons are many, but the
primary reason is that Gibbon is a lower spending district
when compared to similarly sized schools.
Amended Budget: The Board of Education did amend the
2010-11 budget. This will allow more budgetary flexibility
in future years. If patrons have questions, they are encouraged
to contact me at 468-6555 and schedule an appointment.
Facility Items:
It was reported in last month’s “Superintendent’s Notes”
that 85% of the former facility would be recycled. According
to a letter received from Blessing Construction, the final
percentage was 97% by weight.
The Facility Committee has approved the addition of a 30’
x 30’ concrete pad to be added to the elementary playground
area. A current piece of playground equipment will be relocated
to this area.
The Facility Committee has accepted a proposal from
Midwest Track and Tennis to resurface the track. This work
will take place after the track season. This resurfacing is
typical for a track each seven to eight years. The cost will
be approximately $39,000.
District 2011-12 Calendar: The district calendar for the
2011-12 school year has been approved by the board. Please
look for a full page image of this information in this edition
of the newsletter.
Larry Witt
Student Climate Survey
Mr. Witt
The district will be administering a student survey to all
students in grades 4 – 12. This survey will ask the students
to rate the climate of the school. Anyone in the public that
would like to review this survey should contact Mr. Witt’s
office. Parents that would like to exempt their child from
participation should also contact the superintendent’s office.
Defibrillators to be Purchased
The school district will be purchasing two defibrillators
this summer. One will be placed in the elementary wing and
the other in the high school wing. This purchase was made
possible in part by a generous donation from the family of
Wayne Lange. The district expresses its deep appreciation
to the Wayne Lange family.

High School News
The senior class is busy preparing for graduation which will
be held on May 14. This is a time for memories, and I want
to convey the school’s wishes for a sophisticated ceremony.
Seating arrangements will be piloted by junior student escorts;
please follow their lead. Friends and family members,
please save your whistling and horn blowing for graduation
parties and keep the ceremony a serious event. I look forward
to a refined ritual where we bestow the diplomas, scholarships,
and awards to deserving young men and women.
When the school year ends and the students leave, teachers
will still be working. The science teachers will meet on
May 26, 27, and 31 to study the state standards in science
with the help of the ESU staff. Then they will change their
curricula to better match the standards. Next year, students
will be scored on a state test over their science knowledge,
Parents, Don’t Text Your
Students During School
Even though teachers can confiscate student cell phones,
students continue to text in a hidden manner. When parents
text their students, the students feel obligated to respond.
When students are frequently monitoring their cellphones
in class rather than focusing on the teacher, their comprehension
of instructional material lessens. Instructional time is
very important, and we do everything we can to keep time
with the teacher as a number-one priority. Please help us
do this.
Do not text your student during the school day. If there is
an emergency, telephone the office. We will get an emergency
message to your student as quickly as a hidden text.
so teachers want to prepare them.
Teachers will also attend conferences, workshops, and
courses to enhance their teaching skills. Some of the new
skills involve Quantum Learning, Adolescent Literacy, English
as a Second Language, and Interventions in the Classroom.
I, too, will continue my education over the summer.
I plan to participate in training in our new MAP test. By the
time summer ends, we all will be ready to serve our students
in an expanded capacity.
During the summer, if you have a concern, please drop
by the office. We will be on a shorter work schedule, but
still available to listen to your comments and answer your
questions.
Little Smiles
Pre-School Celebrates
We have had a very successful year in our
classroom and we are ready to celebrate!
Throughout the year we have explored and investigated
the world around us and learned a lot
along the way. Our final day of school will be a
very busy day. On May 12 th we get to “”practice”
eating lunch at school and then we get to ride on
a school bus for the first time. We will be going
to Kearney to the Children’s Museum for a field
trip until 3:30. During the evening we will have
our Spring Program beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the
auditorium, where we will sing a few songs and
watch a picture slideshow of this year’s activities.
We will conclude the evening with desserts
in the commons area.

First Grade Adventures
By Mark McLaughlin and Myra Rahmann
On April 11 th , the first and second grade classes
spent the afternoon in the auditorium with representatives
from the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department.
Two dispatchers and deputies came to Gibbon
to talk to the students about appropriate and effective
use of the 911 emergency services. The presenters
stressed the importance of children knowing their
addresses and phone numbers when calling 911. The
students were given different scenarios and asked if
each scenario would warrant calling 911. Several
students were chosen to make example calls to the
dispatch center to practice what they should say in
the event of an emergency.
On March 29 th , the first graders traveled to the
Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney to visit the
Sandhill Crane exhibit. The class rotated through
three different stations at the museum. One station
showcased crane art work created by John James
Audubon. Another station featured information
relating to the Sandhill Crane migratory routes along with
actual Sandhill Crane wings and feet. At the third station
the students used chalk, paint, feathers, and paper towels to
create a portrait of a Sandhill Crane. The trip proved to be a
very educational and fun experience for the students.
On the morning of April 19 th , both first grade classes went
to the Gibbon Exchange Bank to take a tour of the facility
Girls’ and Boys’
State Convention
Pictured are Lexi Giddings and Trent Mackley. These
Gibbon juniors were selected to represent Gibbon at
the annual Girls’ and Boys’ State Conventions held
this summer.
Alissa Baxter visits with Mr. McLaughlin’s class
about what goes on during a typical day at the bank.
and learn a little about how a bank operates. They learned
about saving money for the future, went through the savings
vault, and visited the drive through. This trip tied nicely to
the current social studies unit relating to currency and career
paths. The students enjoyed the trip very much.
Cheerleaders 2011-12
Mrs. Riggert
Math Rocks: John Baylor Test Prep
The Algebra III students will be completing the John Baylor
test prep can raise student ACT scores and can help students
earn more scholarship money for college. The students will
be encouraged to register for the ACT test June 11 th . After
completing the John Baylor Test Prep course, the students
should score well if they are taking it for the first time, or
better if they have already taken the test. The course will
take 12 class periods, with an additional 3 class periods to
take an ACT Practice Test. The online course focuses on
English, Math, and Science. The students will be graded on
class time effort, assigned homework for each of the sessions,
and a practice test at the completion of the John Baylor Test
Prep course. Hopefully, the students will take full advantage
of the opportunity to learn strategies and needed knowledge
to be successful on the ACT test.

Dear Band Enthusiasts,
May is upon us which means it is the beginning of the end
of the 2010-2011 academic year. Music Districts were last
month and were hosted at GICC. The band fared quite well
as they had an impressive three superiors, Cody McGregor,
trombone; Aaron Avitia, timpani; and the Low Brass Trio,
Cody McGregor, Jacob Vega, and Patrick Schuster. These
fine performances will be showcased during the spring
concert. The remaining score tally included four excellent
standings and a one good rating. Needless to say, I was very
proud of the kids and their hard work. All available senior
band high kids were involved as either a soloist or as part
of a small ensemble and all had very positive experiences.
May has three very important final events: the Fine Arts
Awards on May 2, the concert on May 9, and the graduation
ceremony on May 14. The concert protocol will be the same
for this concert as in previous concerts. All band participants
grades 5-12 are expected to watch the entire program. They
will be excused for their performance then asked to return to
7 th grade Life Skills students had the opportunity to participate
in an etiquette dinner at Central Community College
in Hastings on March 29 th . The students looked like professionals
in their dress up clothing. The boys escorted the girls
into the building and seated them at their table. We learned
about proper etiquette from Jay Kieselhorst, the head of the
culinary arts program. He stressed the importance of know-
the audience after their performance. I hope you are ready
to listen to many styles and sizes of music throughout the
entire concert. The 7th and 8th grade band is ready and will
be assisting with the graduation ceremony on May 14. Due
to a lack of available dates, the Fine Arts Awards will be
shared with the Academic Awards. In order to better utilize
the short amount of time available, the 7-12 band awards will
be streamlined as much as possible.
Lastly, the beginning and 6 th grade bands are working
diligently with their program music. The kids are already
aware of possible awards they may qualify for. Many will
be excited to be recognized for their hard work and effort
showing in the past year. The awards will be presented during
the elementary awards day the end of the year.
It’s been my pleasure to serve!
ing what do in a formal dining situation. It could make or
break a possible job opportunity. Our meal was fantastic. It
included: Crab Cakes in Garlic Aioli, Garden Cheese Soup,
Lemon Lime Sorbet, Coq Au Vin, Woodland’s Rice, Broccoli
Almondine, Raspberry Vinaigrette Salad, Rocky Road Towers,
and Challa Bread. This is something they will remember
and be able to use for the rest of their lives.

I hope that when you read this the winter weather will be
gone and the spring flowers will be blooming.
We have been very busy
here at Gibbon Public
Schools. The students are
still working very hard
on their Friday exercise
program and the Walking
Club. It is amazing how
many miles they have walked. As I reported last month, the
students have walked to Gibbon River in Montana and a nature
preserve in Yellowstone National Park. By the time you
read this they will have walked to Gibbon, MN, and back.
They are now walking to Buffalo, NY.
The dental hygiene students from Hastings Community
College examined the K-3rd grade students’ teeth, provided
more dental hygiene education, and applied fluoride to the
students’ teeth. After the dental hygiene students’ visit, anyone
needing further dental care received a letter. If you do
not have a dentist and would like some assistance locating a
dentist please call my office.
While the kids are home for the summer I hope they will
continue to be as physically active as they have been during
the school year. Encourage them to exercise in the morning
and evening when it is cooler. Remind them to wear sunscreen
to prevent sunburns and overexposure to UV rays
that lead to early aging and skin cancers. Also be sure they
wear clothing with long sleeves and pant legs. Hats need to
be worn to prevent exposure to sun on the eyes, face, and
neck. Sunglasses are “cool” as well as necessary to prevent
damage to eyes when anyone is out in the sun.
Remember! If you sent medication in for your student for
the school year, you need to come and pick it up from my
office. I cannot send meds home with students. If medications
are not picked up by May 30th they will be destroyed.
Please be watching for an announcement for times and dates
of sports physicals. The sports physical cannot replace the 7 th
grade physical. Please turn the 7 th grade physical in to me.
New this year is that every student must have TWO
Varicella (chicken pox) vaccinations before school starts
in August. Vaccinations will be given with the physicals if
the student needs them. You can also make an appointment
at the immunization clinic on the third Wednesday of every
month. The Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska
provides this service, therefore you must make an appointment
to get your vaccinations.
Thank you for a wonderful year and have a great summer!
Buffs In Action (BIA) News
As the school year starts to wind down the BIA is putting
the finishing touches on the end-of-the-year activities.
The CARNIVAL is only a few days away. The excitement
is building and all of the Carnival Committee’s hard work
is about to be unveiled…BUT…we still need your help!
Volunteers are needed to help with set-up and tear down and
prize items are still wanted. You can help make a difference!
Consider giving of your time or item for our event. Last
year’s carnival served over 400 students and their families.
Items Needed
2-Liter Drinks (pop-regular & diet, lemonade
and other non-carbonated, more healthy drinks)
Movie Theater-style candy
Small prizes for booths
Donations can be sent with your student and dropped off
at the elementary office.
Montgomery, Kasey Parr, Nancy Kollars, Heather
Smallcomb, Michelle Clark & Yesenia Zuniga
Teacher Appreciation Luncheon: Each year the BIA
host an appreciation luncheon as a small thank you to the
elementary teaching and support staff for their hard work
throughout the year. We are looking for volunteers to
provide a variety of salads and desserts to help this luncheon
be successful. CAN WE COUNT ON YOU? Contact
Kasey Parr (tkparr@nctc.net or 216-1416) or Kelly White
(kelster217@gmail.com) with information about what you
plan to share…it’s a great time to showcase one of your star
Summer Enrichment Classes: Once again the BIA
will be offering summer enrichment classes for Gibbon
Elementary Students. Edgerton Explorit Center out of
Aurora is confirmed for 4 dates: June 10 & 17, July 8 & 15.
They will be bringing science topics full of excitement and
energy to our students. Mark your calendar. These classes
have limited space and WILL fill up fast. Other classes being
considered: Cupcake/Cake decorating, Monster Make-up I
& II, a babysitting class, golf, photography and an art class.
Watch for information the first week of May in your child’s
school mail.
April Box Tops Contest: April was the month for the
Classroom Box Tops Contest. Each class that collected
500+ Box Tops was rewarded with a treat party and the
classroom with the most Box Tops earned their teacher a
$75 shopping spree in a school based catalog (courtesy of
the BIA). Last year’s classroom contest collected over 9000
Box Tops which equals over $900. This money has been set
aside for playground equipment.
Point to Ponder….
Higher performing schools
effectively involve families and community.
Schools that succeed in engaging families from diverse
backgrounds share three key practices:
Focus on building trusting, collaborative relationships
among teachers, families and community members.
Recognize, respect and address families’ needs, as well
as class and cultural differences.
Embrace a philosophy of partnership where power and
responsibility are shared.
2011 Gibbon Football Summer Schedule
Mark McLaughlin
Hartman is Headed
for the Shrine Bowl
By Mark McLaughlin
On June 4, 2011, Chad Hartman will do something that hasn’t been
done since Mike Radke did it in 1992. Chad will represent Gibbon
in the 53 rd annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl Football Game. The game
is held at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, NE, and takes place at 6:30
p.m. Chad will be a member of the South’s team that will be coached
by Randy Huebert (Aurora High School). Chad is the only class C1
player that will be represented on the South’s team. This is truly an
honor, only 70 players are selected to participate in the game. Congratulations
are certainly in order. The mission of the Shrine Bowl is
“to recognize the best senior football players and the efforts of great
coaches in Nebraska with the goal of raising funds for Shriner’s Hospitals
for Children”. Please plan on supporting Chad and the children
this game benefits by attending the game or watching it on television.
The complete list of Gibbon’s Shrine Bowl participants is as follows:
1971- Lonnie Jurgens
1977- Mike Catlin
1978- Kyle Hemmerling
1979- Luke VanMatre
1985- Mike Griffin
1990- Robert Kercher
1992- Mike Radke
2011- Chad Hartman
Chad Hartman walks off the field after what he thought
was his last high school football game. That was until
he got a phone call and invitation from Randy Huebert
to participate in the 53 rd annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl.

Invention Convention Yields Medals
On April 14, 2011, six students travelled to ESU 10 to compete in the Regional
Invention Convention. The students participating were Morgan Wadkins-Meyer,
Brett Gillming, Brien Yepes-Meza, Kiarha Yepes, Seth Stroh, and Nathan Allan.
Seth (left) and Nathan’s (right) invention “The Electric Eraser” earned them third
place medals in the third and fourth grade division. Congratulations to all the
participants and to our winners!
FCCLA State Competition
Mrs. Ronnfeldt
FCCLA (Family, Career, Community, Leaders of America) held its state competition
April 3-5 in Lincoln. About 1,200 delegates from 102 state chapters attended the
conference. We had two students competing, Breanna Gillming and Kennita Moore.
They received a silver medal on their presentation about prescription drug abuse.
Congratulations! There are a lot of outstanding competitors so they did well representing
our school. Students not competing were able to watch other students to learn what is
needed to compete at state, participate on tours of various sites, and attend leadership
trainings. Haide Vargas and Genesis Grado toured the capital and attended various
meetings and trainings.
