GIBBON PUBLIC SCHOOLS MAY 2011
Notes From The Superintendent
Spring is here and the flurry of activities that accompanies
this part of the school year is upon us. Keep those school
calendars handy as we enjoy the last events of the school year.
I hope to see many of you at one or more of the following
events: track meets, golf matches, musical concerts, honors
nights, graduation, and the art show.
Spanish Classroom: The district has proceeded with employment
of a full-time Spanish teacher. The past two years
students have received Spanish classes via distance learning.
This arrangement has been challenging for the students. We
are optimistic that having a classroom teacher will enhance
the learning for our students.
New Hires: To date the district has hired the following individuals
for the 2011-12 school year: Amy Woodman will be
the new Early Childhood teacher, Abby Jones will be the new
Spanish teacher, and Michelle Fries will be the new science
teacher. Brooke Scripter will be the new band teacher and
Rebecca Bartlett will be the new junior high language arts
teacher, pending board approval at its May board meeting.
The district is in the process of interviewing and offering
the secondary English Language Learner position. I am optimistic
this will be a part of the May board agenda as well.
Estimated State Aid: The district has received information
regarding potential state aid for the 2011-12 school
year. According to the modeling, the district would receive
approximately $177,000 in additional state aid. This is great
news as most districts across the state will be losing some
MAP Test Training
The entire staff was trained in MAP testing on March 30
when classes were cancelled. Teachers now have a good
understanding of what the computerized tests cover, how
the tests match Nebraska Standards, how the computer
levels the questions to each student’s ability, and how the
teachers can change their curriculum to match the students’
academic needs.
Elementary Bison Yearbook
The Elementary Bison Yearbooks are available for students at
the cost of $10.00 each. The Bison includes individual pictures of
PK-6th grade students, special events and candid photos.
of their state aid assistance. The reasons are many, but the
primary reason is that Gibbon is a lower spending district
when compared to similarly sized schools.
Amended Budget: The Board of Education did amend the
2010-11 budget. This will allow more budgetary flexibility
in future years. If patrons have questions, they are encouraged
to contact me at 468-6555 and schedule an appointment.
Facility Items:
It was reported in last month’s “Superintendent’s Notes”
that 85% of the former facility would be recycled. According
to a letter received from Blessing Construction, the final
percentage was 97% by weight.
The Facility Committee has approved the addition of a 30’
x 30’ concrete pad to be added to the elementary playground
area. A current piece of playground equipment will be relocated
to this area.
The Facility Committee has accepted a proposal from
Midwest Track and Tennis to resurface the track. This work
will take place after the track season. This resurfacing is
typical for a track each seven to eight years. The cost will
be approximately $39,000.
District 2011-12 Calendar: The district calendar for the
2011-12 school year has been approved by the board. Please
look for a full page image of this information in this edition
of the newsletter.
Student Climate Survey
Mr. Witt
The district will be administering a student survey to all
students in grades 4 – 12. This survey will ask the students
to rate the climate of the school. Anyone in the public that
would like to review this survey should contact Mr. Witt’s
office. Parents that would like to exempt their child from
participation should also contact the superintendent’s office.
Defibrillators to be Purchased
The school district will be purchasing two defibrillators
this summer. One will be placed in the elementary wing and
the other in the high school wing. This purchase was made
possible in part by a generous donation from the family of
Wayne Lange. The district expresses its deep appreciation
to the Wayne Lange family.
