MAA MATHFEST 2015Graduate Student ActivitiesWORKSHOPWhat’s the Story? A GraduateStudent Workshop on Formulatinga Research Presentation for aGeneral AudienceWednesday, August 5, 1:00 PM – 2:20 PMMarriott Wardman Park, Maryland CPresenting our research toundergraduate students can be bothfun and rewarding. It can also bedifficult, however, since the gorydetails of our results often requirea great deal of specific jargon andbackground. Nonetheless, the bigideas can almost always be presentedat a variety of levels, and thisworkshop is designed to interactivelyhelp participants develop the skillsneeded to formulate a presentationon their research that is appropriatefor an audience of undergraduatestudents. Since many colleges anduniversities require giving such a talkas part of a job interview, almostany graduate student will have theopportunity to do so, and the ability tocommunicate complex mathematicalideas to students is a valued trait in acandidate. This workshop will consistof hands-on activities and audienceinteraction aimed toward developingand improving the necessary skills forcreating an engaging and accessiblepresentation for undergraduates.Participants should be preparedto discuss in groups a potentialpresentation on their research or otherrelated topic.Organizers:Rachel Schwell, Central ConnecticutState UniversityMay Mei, Denison UniversitySponsor:Committee on Graduate Studentsand Young MathematiciansNetworkGraduate Student Q&AThursday, August 6, 2:00 PM – 3:30 PMMarriott Wardman Park, Park Tower 8224This session is only for graduatestudents intending to present in thesession “Great Talks for a GeneralAudience: Coached Presentationsby Graduate Students” on Saturday,August 8th. You maybe surprised to know that teachingisn’t your only option; in the “realworld” mathematical knowledge isa valued commodity and there aremany interesting job opportunitiesfor mathematicians in nonacademicsettings. So, whether you are amathematics student looking for ajob once you graduate or an advisorlooking for advice to give to futurejob-seeking students, this sessionwill help you gain new perspectiveson nonacademic career experiencesand what employers value in theiremployees. Panelists will share theirpaths to their current positions andoffer advice to others looking foremployment in similar venues.POSTER SESSIONPosterFest 2015: A Poster Sessionof Scholarship by Early CareerMathematicians and GraduateStudentsFriday, August 7, 3:30 PM – 5:00 PMMarriott Wardman Park, Exhibit Hall AThis poster session will allow earlycareer mathematicians, includinguntenured faculty and graduatestudents, to present and discusstheir scholarly activities with otherattendees in an informal atmosphere.Examples of scholarly activitiessuitable for this poster session includeexpository work, preliminary reports, scholarship of teaching and learning, and research reports. While manygraduate students will be asked togive a lecture to a general audience, which includes undergraduates andnon-mathematicians as part of ajob interview, most students do nothave experience talking to a nonresearchaudience. This session givesgraduate students the opportunityto give a 20-minute talk aimed atan undergraduate audience, whichhas been exposed to calculus andsome linear algebra. Both the talksand abstracts should be designed toexcite a wide range of undergraduatesabout mathematics. All participantsin this session will receive privatefeedback on their presentations froman established faculty member and anundergraduate student. Time permitting,a discussion of effective techniques fordelivering great general-audience talkswill occur at the end of the session.Organizers:James Freeman, Cornell CollegeRachel Schwell, Central ConnecticutState UniversityAliza Steurer, Dominican UniversitySponsor:MAA Committee on GraduateStudentsJoin Us in Celebrating the Releaseof I, MathematicianThursday, August 63:00-4:00 p.m.MAA Pavilion in the Exhibit HallPlan to join us and some of the contributors from I, Mathematician for a wine and cheesereception in the MAA Pavilion.
