The truth is out there. Exactly where is anybody's guess, but Brian Vike,
an Independent UFO Field Investigator based out of Houston, B.C., thinlcs
it might be closer than you think.
Vike has been researching UFOs for a number of years, and he says over
the last fevi^ months; the number of reports of strange tights in the skies over
the interior of B.C. has shot right up.
"We're up to about;38 to 39 reports for British Columbia since January,'*
said Vike. ''And over the last month follcs from around the north have
reported 19 sightings to me. This is an incredible amount of reports from
ordinary credible residents; There's just t>een so much going on."
While Vike isn't going to go oiit and say that people have been reporting
UFOs, what he will say is that people have been reporting weird things in
thesky, and he wants to find out what they are.
"Is it the milita^-y? I don't know,'' said Vike. "I don't go around saying
they're aliens. I'm just trying to figure it,all out"
; Although there have been numerous sightuigs reported in the area from
Prince George west to Kitimat, andfill points in between, there was one
ISSUES
report in particular that piqued his interest.
"What started it all was an incident on Highway 16 East of Smithers at the
beginning of February," said Vike. "Three people were driving back to
Houston, when they noticed a big light coming through the clouds and
slowly descending ta tree level. This object was massive, and as the car
approached, the image of some sort of craft began to take shape. The people
were so alarmed that they reported the sighting to the RCMP in Smithers,
and thiey'veopened afile on it." ,
Naysayers, and pragmatists might want to dismiss the sighting as figments
of peoples imaginations^ but Vike says these were believable witnesses,
people with nothing to gain by making false reports to the RCMP.
"These people are credible," said Vike. "They're not kids. What they're
seeing, I don't know. This is a very serious thing and I'm just trying to sort
some of this out."
: Vike says he hasn't received any reports of sightings in the Quesnel area,
but that other organizations have.
^'Personally Thaven't got any,'r said Vike."But I know that UFO BC has
in the past."
TheUFO B.C. web site tells the story of a reported UFO sighting in
Quesnel on March 23,2000.
The witness said he saw a globe-shaped object with a bright red lower
halCsilently moving north to northwest. It had a red flashing light that
reflected off the low cloud cover. -
He viewed it with his binoculars and estimated that it was about oneand
a half miles away, 800 feet above the ground and travelling about 60—70
miles per hour. He eventually lost sight of the object as it travelled into the
distance. It was also viewed by Ills wife and family.
It's not surprising to hear that there have been a number of UFO sightings
in the Interior of B.C., but what is somewhat surprising is who has
investigated the claims.
In a Narrative Report from a former RCAF Station at Puntzi Mountain,
approximately 250-300 kilometres West of Williams Lake, there is the
report of an investigation into a documented UFO sighting in the early 60's.
Dated June 17,1963, the report tells of a First Lieutenant Weeks who
travelled to Nazko, B.C., to interview a Mr. Laurent, concerning his sighting
of a UFO the previous November.
The document goes on to say that theUniversity of British Columbia was
interested in tracking down the object, which was reported to have
impacted somewhere in the Chilcotin area.
As one of the few UFO researchers in Canada, Vike says he receives all
types of unexplainable stuff, from right across the country.
The fact that he's willing to listen to these claims and investigate them
further makes him stand out from the crowd. But despite what people may
think, he's not nuts.
"No, not at all," said Vike. I'm sure there are some people that thmk that,
but we don't go at it with the intention of saying there are little green guys.
It is serious. It is a science. I investigate. I do whatever I can do, make phone
calls to authorities, whatever."
In an interesting aside> Vike says there have been seven federal
government and five military hits to his web site since the beginning of
February.
Whether this validates his investigations isn't really important to him, he
just wants to know what they are looking for.
"Why are they all interested in my site?" said Vike.
Vike says if people are really interested in really looking for UFOs it's not
that difficult
"All people have to do is keep their eyes open,"said Vike. "Remember tolook
up,"
Tom Gurnett and Jean Speare pour over the pictures and
text for the Legion anniversary book. Annie Gaiiant photo
75 years of
Legion service
The considerable human resources of the Quesnel
branch of the Royal Canadian Legion have been
brought to bear on the occasion of their 75th anniversary.
.
Its hard to believe the Legion has been around for
75 years, but with a special anniversary book being
compiled and various events being planned, members
of Branch 94 plan to share their excitement.
"This is the first time this branch has chronicled its
history since it began on October 10, 1927," said anniversary
committee chair Tom Gurnett. "The idea came
from Jean Johnson. It was her promotion that started
the ball rolling."
When a devastating fire destroyed the old Legion
hall, records, mementos, photos and numerous other
treasures went up in smoke.
Although many items have either been replaced or
substituted with other equally valuable memorabilia,
some members, including Jean, felt a book would help
preserve the branches history.
There was also concern over the number of members
who are passing away and their story may never
be told.
Tom, with the extensive assistance of his committee,
is editing and publishing the book on his computer
and it will be printed by Spartan Printing. If all goes as
planned the 100 plus publication will be ready by midsummer.
Each page is divided into three sections with historical
information, personal recollections and photos
presented separately.
"This way its many short stories," Tom said.
With submissions by such veterans as Tom Moffat,
Jerry Lemire, Reg Muir and Sue Ward, plus the Quesnel
Cariboo Observer archives at the museum^ the
committee is very pleased with the way the book is
shaping up.
Even though the book is almost complete, Tom
said they are still looking for submissions.
When completed Tom expects to sell the book for
less than $20, just enough to cover costs.
Official celebrations are planned for October with
a three-day event including dignitaries from Quesnel
and beyond.
