Technology
Employment conditions
Employment activity in the technology sector
steadily increased during the first three
quarters of 2011 before slowing in the fourth
quarter, most noticeably within the financial
services sector. Despite the slowdown, steady
demand continues in 2012 for skilled and
experienced professionals in companies that
are building their technical support functions.
Skills in demand
The highest programming skills in demand
are C#, .NET and Java, particularly within
the commercial and banking sectors where
companies are hiring in-house administration
and programming support for these systems.
There is also a strong requirement for Analyst
Programmers and Network Engineers to
facilitate effective company operations and
communications. Senior Business Analysts
are highly sought-after to implement strategies
that are in line with high level company goals.
Other roles in demand include IT Managers,
Group IT Directors and Project Managers to
lead national IT teams.
Salary expectations
With the demand for skilled technology
professionals rising, employers are likely
to review salary levels to retain staff. Most
salary increases for technology professionals
are likely to be in the 3% to 6% range,
with higher increases expected for top
performers. For skills in high demand, such
as programming across the commercial
sector, above average salary increases can be
anticipated. Some employers may also
reward staff with bonuses, based on their
level of experience and performance.
Market outlook
Recruitment activity has been relatively stable
in early 2012, and if business conditions in
Hong Kong strengthen, recruitment activity in
the technology sector should increase in the
next 12 months. There will be a continued
requirement for skills in programming,
infrastructure engineering, technical operations
and business analysis as companies grow
their technical support functions across the
country. Employers are also likely to offer
the opportunity for career progression and
international travel to keep talented people
within their business.
