PHOTO BY TOM ERVIN INVESTING IN FAU’S FUTURE This annual report tells the story of six major gifts, and more importantly, the stories of the people who stand behind these gifts.Generous and insightful, these donors are imagining and investing in the great future that lies ahead for FAU, and are turning their dreams for higher education into reality. “ Michael and I hope that this collection will benefit both students and faculty and inspire a new generation of artists who are dedicated to creative nonconformity and self-expression.” ~ TONYA ARANDA MICHAEL & TONYA ARANDA 20th Century Russian Art Collection Residential property developers Michael Michael and Tonya Aranda knew that FAU would make the perfect home for their extraordinary and rare collection of 20th century Russian and Ukrainian fine art. With its strong visual arts program, the Dorothy F. Schmidt Schmidt College of Arts and Letters’ School of the Arts is well suited to be the repository for the collection. The Arandas, who live in Jupiter, Florida, and own EH Building Group of North Palm Beach, spent three years acquiring the more more than $2 million million collection of almost a thousand lithographs and serigraphs. Abstract geometric works in the collection collection by suprematism art movement founder Kasimir Malevich had great impact on the art world of the early 20th century. Other well known artists in the collection include Mikhail Chemiakin, Moisey Kogan, Kogan, Alexandre Zlotnik, Michail Aleksandrov and and Marc Chagall. These pioneers are part part of permanent exhibits at The Museum of Modern Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, both in New York, and the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris. With their gift, the largest single donation of art to the College, the Arandas are enhancing visual arts and art history programs at FAU and in the community.
PHOTO BY JEFFREY THOLL MARLEEN & HAROLD FORKAS Marleen & Harold Forkas Alumni Center Marleen and Harold Forkas have a talent for turning dreams into reality. As the first woman to graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Management Engineering Division, Marleen used her creativity, drive and innovative ideas to single-handedly launch and grow what would become a successful 40-year career in the fashion industry. Harold’s story is equally compelling. Sound business sense, boundless energy and a winning personality helped him ascend in the sales department of Coca-Cola. Eager for a new challenge, Harold became a Midas Muffler franchise owner. By the time he retired in 1988, he owned eight very profitable Midas Muffler dealerships. Once again, Marleen and Harold are making a dream come true. By naming FAU’s first-ever alumni center, they are providing the Boca Raton campus with a long-needed permanent home for alumni. Their gift of $1 million, which will double thanks to the state of Florida’s matching gift program, will help build the two-floor, 13,000-square-foot tropical style structure. Spacious, with a two-story atrium, the alumni center will house a library, great hall, office space, seminar rooms, classrooms and a catering kitchen. A lighthouse tower will be an important part of the building’s design and a symbol of the FAU National Alumni Association’s mission to guide alumni “home.” “Harold and I sincerely hope that in naming FAU’s alumni center, we will instill a feeling of E.S.P. – Enthusiasm, Sincerity and Pride, in all past, present and future graduates of FAU.” ~ MARLEEN FORKAS INVESTING IN FAU’S FUTURE HH
