food is more than just sustenanceDining Services are a major part of campus life at Beloit College, servingthousands of meals each week to our students, faculty, staff and visitors.We invite you to join us at the Commons Café in Chapin Hall toexperience great food and share great company.The newly remodeled Commons Cafe has been designed with manyamenities to make dining enjoyable. An expanded serving area withexhibition cooking will offer our students eight or more entrée optionsfor each meal. A brick pizza oven, grill, and exhibition area, along withan expanded salad bar and build your own deli in the serving area aregreatly anticipated to provide students with some of their favoritefoods.To help our students more fully enjoy all of the dining options that areoffered, meal plans have been designed to provide maximum flexibility.Students may use flex dollars at all dining locations.We encourage you to read through this brochure to become familiarwith more aspects of the dining program at Beloit College for the2012-2013 school year.THE REMODELED <strong>COMMONS</strong> CAFÉ IN CHAPIN HALL INCLUDES THEFOLLOWING STATIONS:GrillThe Grill features a short-order breakfast menu with daily specials suchas French toast, eggs cooked to order, breakfast meats, hash browns,pancakes or biscuits and gravy. Our lunch and dinner menu includesburgers, chicken sandwiches, french fries, and chips. Daily grill specialsmay include marinated chops, specialty cuts of meat, vegan andvegetarian options or hot sandwiches such as a French Dip or Italiangrinder.PizzaAt lunch and dinner, we will offer daily specialties including pizza,calzones, stromboli, and flatbreads.PastaDaily pasta specials feature a variety of flavorful meats, vegetables andfresh sauces made from scratch daily, and are served with healthy sides,breadsticks and rolls.

What is a Swipe?A swipe is the process of paying for a meal through the register,accessing and reducing your meal plan. One swipe equals one meal.Swipes can only be used at, and refer to, meals in the Commons CafeWhat is a Flex Dollar?Flex dollars are designed to allow purchases at all dining locations oncampus (The Commons Café, Dk’s or Java Joint). Purchases arededucted from your dining fund balance much like a debit card ordeclining balance account. Prices are the listed cash price, but no tax ischarged because it is part of your meal plan.Beloit BucsBeloit Bucs are a voluntary debit plan, offered to staff, faculty, and anystudent who would like to supplement their meal plan with additionalfunds for ala carte dining.Information for Using Flex Dollars and Beloit Bucs• Sales tax is not charged on purchases made with Flex Dollars• Flex dollars can be used on any academic calendar day during thesemester, at any Bon Appetit location, and carry over from first tosecond semester, but expire at the end of the school year.• Beloit Bucs can be used at any Bon Appétit location on campus—Dk's, Java Joint and The Commons. Beloit Bucs do not expire, andmay be refunded at the end of your Beloit career.• Beloit Bucs qualify for discounted meal prices at the Commons Café• Beloit Bucs can be added in $50 increments at any time during theyear, and any time we are open, school year, summer, orbreak periods.• Your balance of Flex Dollars, or Beloit Bucs, shows on your registerreceipt any time you make a purchase.


our kitchen principles• Our menus are written based on seasonality and availability of regionalfresh product. Whenever possible, these are produced locally usingsustainable and organic practices.• Turkey breast and chicken are produced without the routine use ofantibiotics as a feed additive• Hamburgers are made with fresh ground chuck from beef raised onvegetarian feed without antibiotics or hormones• Other meats are raised without antibiotics as a first preference• Milk is free of antibiotics and artificial Bovine Growth Hormone• All eggs are produced cage-free and Certified Humane• Vegetarian options are plentiful at every meal• Healthy menu items are a mainstream offering throughout our cafés• Salsas, pizza, marinara and other sauces are made from scratch• Stocks are made from scratch• Turkey and beef are roasted in-house daily for deli meat• Tuna is dolphin-safe, packed in water• Seafood should be purchased fresh when available locally. Salmon iswild caught. We support the Seafood Watch guidelines asrecommended by the Monterey Bay Aquarium• Olive and canola oils are used for everyday salad dressings, specialtyoils for other purposes (i.e. walnut oil or chili oil)• Trans fats are not used in our kitchens• All salad dressings are made from scratch except nonfat and lowcaloriedressings which may be purchased as necessary• Vegetables are prepared in batches at the last possible minute andserved in the smallest possible batches• MSG and peanut oil are never used in the preparation of our food• Mashed potatoes are made from fresh potatoes• Fresh squeezed lemon juice is used for cooking and sauces• Cookies, muffins and breads (where possible) are baked fresh daily
