Smoking also continuesto be an enormous public health problem; 18 percentof American adults still smoke!You are the Director of Population Health Program Designand Engagement Optimization at the University ofPittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Health Plan, what exactlydoes this mean?The UPMC Health Plan has multiple efforts in place to helpindividuals live as healthy and well as possible. My work atthe Plan is split between both helping the Plan improve existingand develop new programs aimed at either preventingchronic disease or helping people who have a chronic disease,like diabetes, manage it as successfully as possibleand encouraging our members to make use of the healthpromoting programs that we offer.What type of schooling have you completed?The skills that I use on a daily basis come from my training inbehavioral science (my PhD is in clinical psychology); epidemiology(I have my Masters in Public Health); and consumerhealth informatics (I did a post-doctoral fellowship in informaticsat the National Cancer Institute).What roles have you held on your way to your currentposition?After finishing my training I spent a wonderful three years asa behavioral scientist at RAND Corporation. I loved that joband love RAND, but really wanted to have a specific clinicalfocus to my work. So I moved to the University of Pittsburgh,where I was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry,working at the Hillman Cancer Center. I spent about20 percent of my time seeing patients as a psychologist andthe rest of my time engaged in research. In February 2015I transitioned to the Health Plan, because the position theywere offering was an excellent opportunity to do my work onhealth behavior change in a more applied setting.You have a focus on cancer prevention specifically inregards to smoking cessation, why did you choose thatfocus?There is a lot of local expertise in Pittsburgh in smoking cessation,and given that this work was focused on building a50 Holl & Lane, Issue 2You have previous experience in clinical trials. Can youtell us about those?The largest clinical trial I worked on was a study looking attwo different types of support group interventions for womenwith breast cancer – one was focused on skill buildingto manage stress, and the other was focused on emotionalexpression. Additionally, we enrolled women in these groupseither close to their time of diagnosis or around the timetheir treatment ended. The different approaches had theirstrengths and weaknesses, but in general, both approacheswere helpful.What do your work days look like?I’m a morning person so I like to get in an hour or two ofwork before the day really begins. This is also the best timefor me to write, so I try to make progress on writing projectsbetween 5 and 7 am each day. I drive my daughter to schoola few days each week so I’m usually in my office by 9 am.I almost always have a meeting or two during the day, but Ireally love that my work is rarely done in isolation – I work asa part of many different teams. Most days I finish by about4:30 pm, and do my best to pick my daughter up from herafter school program before 5:30 pm.What has been the most rewarding part of your career?Being a part of people’s lives as they navigate a cancer diagnosisand cancer treatment has been an enormous privilege.The courage and grace I’ve been a witness to havebeen tremendous.What do you forsee in the future for cancer prevention?New cancer screening techniques will be introduced that willallow us to detect cancer earlier – we’re seeing this now withlung cancer screening, which was just approved for somecurrent and former smokers by the US Preventive ServicesTask Force. Hopefully we’ll see the development of screeningtests for some of our most deadly cancers, like pancreaticand ovarian. And I imagine that as people end up payingmore out of their own pockets for their health care that morepeople will adopt preventive health behaviors that will lead tobetter cancer prevention.produced by SARAH HARTLEY
