BEING A MOM: A PHOTO DIARYThe ordinary, everyday moments of motherhood can become repetitive and mundane. Now, atthe age of 35, I'm a mother to four boys agessix and under and all I can think about is addinganother sweet babe to our family. Funnyhow that happens, huh? It turns out I love everythingabout motherhood, even the not soglamorous parts. I love the overwhelming feeling oflove when a newborn is placed on your chest for thefirst time. I love their little grunts while nursing in themiddle of the night. I love watching them take theirfirst steps. I love watching them develop relationshipswith each other that will last a lifetime. This wholemotherhood gig is pretty intoxicating.About two years ago, when my third son was still ababy, I panicked because I realized I was starting toforget little things about our daily life like the way mysecond son used to carry the entire contents of hisroom around the house with him or the way my firstson used to fall asleep in the hallway while boycottingnap time. As silly as those things may sound, thoseare the important things to me. Real life. So I made itmy mission to document our day to day happenings sothat I could have a photo journal to look back on. I'venever been a fan of posed pictures because I'm moreinterested in seeing what happened before and afteryou made them stop and say "cheese!". I like to actas a fly on the wall and just observe them being, snappingaway as they play outside or eat their breakfast.These are the things I want to remember.Like the day Henry, 3 years old, woke up and decidedCheerios were the best breakfast ever. He nowasks for them every morning, then immediately asksfor whatever everyone else is having as well. It’s alsonot every morning that my husband is able to enjoybreakfast with everyone, so this was a special momentin that regard as well. Father and son, just enjoyingsome cereal. familyGideon, 15 months,is such a naturelover. He runs tothe door anytimehe hears it openand tries to sneakoutside. Lately,he's been makinga beeline to theswing at the back ofthe yard. He lovesdigging in the dirt,putting rocks in hismouth and pushingthe wagon aroundthe yard. The multiplemosquito bitesall over this chubbythighs are a testamentto just howsweet this boy is.Silas, 4 years old,has always beenthe most interestedin music out ofall the boys. Eachnight after dinner wehave dance partiesto shake out all thesillies. If he’s notDJ-ing on the computer(“You MakeMy Dreams” byHall & Oates is hisfavorite right nowbecause they sangit in school), he’sbusting a move andshaking his booty,making everyoneelse join in on thefun. He certainlydances like no oneis watching, and Ilove that about him.
