On our first lab test (see May 2015 issue) we managed to hitthe claimed 10kg max drag really easily. But this rod is made tomanage a line weight of 40lb (18kg). So we headed back to thelab and tortured it some more. With a consistent power rangewe managed to hit slightly over 40lb pressure.19

Brute Battle ManagementI started with a 30lb leader and it burst twice since we werefishing with very heavy drag having cast quite close to underwaterthe pillars of the restaurant. When I finally changed to the60lb leader the tug of war was full on.

Having a line rating of 40lb I decided to see how much “40lb”this heavy metal monster slayer can handle. We managed todrag two fighters out of the danger zone with the Metal Mayhemholding its ground. Damn, this rod is freaking amazing.23

35Back at our lab we were having a dramatictime pressure testing the WarmongerInshore. It really proved itself to bea warmonger looking for a fight with almosteveryone. First it almost poked oneof our testers in the errr... area betweenhis legs. ALMOST. Then is almost toremy right ear off just slightly missing thehelmet I had on my head as the leaderline used broke. I felt the wind in my ear.Anyway, the Warmonger Inshore wetested has a tip rated at 15lb and a buttsection rated 30lb. The first try endedwith a burst leader. On the second attemptwith a new leader line installed,we managed to push it close to 32lb withsome crackle and no more pops. It did2lb above the rated 30lb.

It is a weapon.

Old Vs. NewThe Zen X EA Zagan Slow Twitch is the latestSlow Twitch series rod in the Zen Zaganfamily; this one being a collaboration betweenZen Zagan and Extreme Anglers. Looking atthe two, there are some differences.

45ConfigurationThe new Slow Twitch is a one piece rod whereas theolder one is a two piece offset jointed rod or butt joint.Although offset jointed rods are pretty good when itcomes to power and curve consistency, a one piecerod is usually better since there are no joints.

Guide SizesAlthough both rods use Fuji guides and both have thesame number of guides, the guides on the older oneis bigger and with that I mean the huge stripper guide(one size bigger) on the older model. This gives it theodder less sleek look and slightly heavier weight.

47StiffnessUsing smaller guides also calls for a realignment ofguide spacing. The newer one with the smaller stripperguides have got more of its guides pushed forwardsince the smaller stripper guide is suited further front;this increased the stiffness of the rod in favour of thenew model.

Different WrapsBoth new and old Slow Twitch rods comewith wraps. The old one comes with the spiralcarbon wrap (nothing to do with guides)and the new one comes with the carbonX wrap of which adds to rigidity and bettertoughness.

49Weight LossThe new Slow Twitch is lighter than the olderone by 21 grams. The fat has probablybeen trimmed at the stripper guide, EVAhandles with the new one flashing a slimmerlooking more ergonomically designedhandle, and maybe a little within the blankconstruction (cannot be certain as this isusually shrouded in secrecy).

What’s more important isthat the rod as a whole feels lightweightweighing only 133 grams(tested model).

Where The Cost Got TrimmedOf course something somewhere will have to give. Shouldyou want a brand new Audi but willing to only pay half theprice, you should be expecting to get a re-badge Volkswagenwith a Skoda engine, and Seat interior. It is stillan Audi; with the four rings.In the case of the Salty Stage JigCraft it is not as bad aswith the Audi example. Well, you get China guides andreel seat. That is all that has been trimmed. You are stillleft with a proper Jigging rod, with good design, and goodquality blanks and other parts; not forgetting lightnessand well balance.

Lab TestEquipment UsedReel: Abu Garcia Promax SpinningLine: Berkley Trilene Big GamePoundage: 20.5lb.Just how much power is in the Salty Stage JigCraft? They claim PE0.8-2, so we set the bar at 20lb. We wore our safety gear and proceededto with the pressure test. Power delivery is not bad althoughnot constant. We managed to get it to go pass 20lb. just at about20.5lb. at a 45 degree rod angle with the bend reaching about 10” tothe fore EVA (80% of the blank).65

Field TestCasting AbilitiesThe JigCraft is a very good caster, an advantage of having a softertip. It sent our baits flying really far. Amongst the rods we testedon the day, the JigCraft cast the furthest and it did it on every cast.This is great when there is a need to cast jigs. However, I do notrecommend casting heavier jigs due to its softer tip.

Battle ManagementWhile it did pretty well in our lab, it got really scary where it mattersmost; during the battle. We risk losing the fish to the structures (pillars)and had to engage brute force. At a 45 degrees angle the rodran out of steam and the fish was really close to the pillars.More force had to be exerted. I force the rod to a very dangerouslevels and managed to drag the fish out to a safer place where thebattle continued. That was achieved with the rod bending all theway past the reel seat.

Alas, the fish was landed and taken up for some photos. The fishwas indeed a strong gladiator giving a very good fight but the inconsistencyof power delivery certainly threw in some scary momentswhere I thought I would have lost the fight. Inconsistencyof power is its weakness.69

73Forcing A RustBeing a hook removing tool also means that the bent nose pliersfollow us on fishing trips and having to do so, corrosion and rustresistance is very important especially to saltwater anglers. Withthat in mind we decided to force the VFOX D&C Bent Nose #3044Pliers to rust with a saltwater spray test.We sprayed some saltwater onto the pliers and allowed it to staythere for 12 hours (check done at 2 hours intervals). Why 12 hours?Well, that is generally how long we spend a day out at sea plus afew minutes more before we think, “oooh, perhaps I should washthe pliers too.”

Getting Salty With ItWe started the test at 9.23am with a spray of saltwateron the pliers and allowed it to sit all salty. Aftersome time, white specs of salt residue started appearing.At 7.30pm I headed out to dinner with plansto return by 9pm. Well, I returned at 10 plus due toan unexpected friendly meet up, and decided to stopat 10.10pm.

Start Jigging

117After sitting a while quietly enjoying the surroundings pickyour rod up and give it a hard sudden jerk. No bite? Dropyour spoon to the bottom and in a few more seconds giveit another jerk, let it fall for a bit by dropping your rod tipwhile taking in some line, and then follow up with anotherjig.Fishes holding deep at the bottom may go crazy and hityour spoon. This has worked for a variety of fishes such assnakeheads and sebaraus (Hampala Barb). Also works atsea.

I am sure you’ve heardof hybrid cars; cars that run on dinosaur fuel and cow manure,or was it electricity. Anyone of those combinations still makesit hybrid. The same goes for bearings those magical thingsthat turn friction into, well, less friction.

121Philemon FooWhat Are HybridBearings?We all know steel bearings well enough. Hybrid bearings are bearingsthat use a mixture of steel parts and ceramic parts. Theycome in the form of steel ball bearings that are coated with ceramicor ceramic ball bearings. These bearings are then secured in astainless steel cage, races, and shield hence the term hybrid.

123Why Use HybridBearings?Wooden balls are quite rubbish and steel balls can takethe beating but tend to corrode and thus give up theghost sometimes a bit too early. Industrial ceramic is reallytough and resistant to wear and corrosion. This saidthe use of ceramic in hybrid bearing allows for muchlonger life span as compared to that of stainless steelbearings.Other AdvantagesHigh quality ceramic coated bearings have one verydistinct quality and advantage over steel bearings. Theyhave a surface that is very much smoother than steelbearings giving them lower levels of friction. This translatesto longer spin duration and smoother operations.

DisadvantageBeing noisy is one complain that many who have taken theplunge and changed to hybrid bearings, complain about. Thereis this rough grinding sound that hybrid bearings emit. Theysound like the bearing(s) have broken or failed but they havenot. That is just how they sound like.

125To SummarizeHybrid bearings are tougher and smoother than stainless steelbearings. They cost more too, even the cheap low quality onesthat I personally do not recommend. But if you intend to go theroad and spend good money, my recommendation will be to gofor quality and not scrooge.

Junior AnglersMeeting Friends And Wetting LinesAs a follow up to the 2015 Angling Fair, I managed toarrange a trip with Mr. Phil, chief editor of The Asian Anglermagazine and Mr. Ginson, a great angler who has beenone of my idols. I had a great time fishing with them.

139By Amirul IrfanAfter a quick meet up at JIMS Pro Tackle, we headeddown to a river, in hopes for sebarau (Hampala Barbs). Imissed two sebarau on diving minnows. A moderate retrievewith twitches triggered the bites.

Mr. Phil doing some cool casts with the Abu Garcia RevoMGX paired with an Abu Garcia Ikazuchi Ryoku.The river is an unfamiliar to me and some areas requiredtricky casts. I will have to work on my casting skills.

The river started to get murky due to suspected sand miningactivities upstream. Having a good chat with Mr. Philand Mr. Ginson was the only catch of the session.141

Due to a disappointing session at the river, we moved tothe Steroid Pond, one of my favourite spots. Mr. Ginsonhelped me out to replace the Abu Garcia Silvermax’s bearingswith Hedgehog Studio “Kattobi” Spool Bearings - ZRSuper Long Cast Stainless Bearing - [1150ZR & 1030ZR].The performance was out of the world. I was able to makegood casts with minimal effort.

Mr. Ginson started the session with a juvenile haruan(Channa striatus) on a Smith Dentos Frog worked slowlyon hydrilla.143

Here’s Uncle Phil patiently working soft plastics for haruans.Juvenile haruans decided to nibble on his lures.

A juvenile haruan I managed to fool on the Ripple AshZero Arise 60F minnow rigged on the Mustad Fastachswivel. A slow retrieve and a pause was all it took to foolthis haruan.145

After fishing we headed to JIMS Pro Tackle and then off toa nearby restaurant for dinner. We had a good chat aboutfishing gear and Mr. Ginson showed me his lures andshared some good knowledge.

The Smith Dentos frog which scored 2 fish for Mr. Ginson.Beautiful frog with a soft body, perfect for solid hooksetson snakeheads. It was an honour to fish with Mr. Ginsonand Uncle Phil. Being friends online was good and beingable to meet them was great. I learned so much fromthem.147

A Mayan Cichlid caught on the Berkley Powerbait SaltwaterShrug Minnow in the white glow colour with a jigheadon the Mustad Fastach swivel with ball bearings. Last minutecatch beside some grass. Feisty little fish that will hitanything in the water.

Fishing after rains at Beris Lake in Kedah. Beautiful lakewith huge potential for sportfishing. I spotted snakeheads,Giant Snakeheads and even Hampala Barbs.149

Boils of smaller Hampala Barbs were closer to shore, andmicro spoons were great for fooling them. My youngerbrother caught his first Hampala Barb on the SabpoloRave Spoon. It was released after a few photo later.

Early morning Hampala Barb on my second day at thelake. My younger brother caught it on the same spoon.The take was very aggressive and suprising as it was stilldark.151

We tried boating in the afternoon with the resort boat driver.The heat did not help at all. The resort boat driver didnot know about fishing spots so we just randomly travelledand casted along.

After getting off the boat at the jetty I almost hooked a tilapiaon a spoon. There were two aggressive tilapias. BeforeI could switch to a micro lure my younger brother dippedworms and caught one. I think this can be classified asstealing a catch.153

My father caught the second tilapia on worms too. I almosthooked another one on a Berkley Powerbait soft plasticbut it decided to swim away after my younger brothersplashed in the water.

My dad managed to fool a tilapia at a mining pond in Perak.This tilapia took the Berkley Powerbait 2” Powergrub inblack which was fished slowly on the bottom.155

A great start to a weekend. The Surecatch D-Legend 10-20lbs rod handling my personal record snakehead. Despiteaggressive runs into grass the D-Legend managed tocontrol the fish.

I made a quick cast with the DUO Realis Crankbait 48SRin Prism Clown after seeing some bubbles and baitfishjumping. The fish took the crank after a few seconds andmade an impressive run. The Mustad Fastach Swivelhelped to maintain the wobble of this small crankbait.157
