[ REVIEW ]MELLICKER, J. (PRODUCER).(2004). DV ENLIGHTENMENT[TRAINING DVD].UNITED STATES:WWW.DVCREATORS.NETStephen Schleicher,Assistant ProfessorDepartment ofInformationNetworking andTelecommunicationsFort Hays StateUniversity600 Park StreetHays, KS 67601schleicher@fhsu.eduDV Enlightenment produced by DVcreators.net demonstratesto the DV auteur the dramatic results that can be achieved witha basic knowledge of lighting. Ideally targeted to the beginner, looking to improve entry level skills, this one hour DVD is agreat aid for educators, students, and independent filmmakers. The quality and content of DV Enlightenment keeps the viewerengrossed without becoming boring. The first section; The DVcreators.net Four Point LightingMethod, gives a comprehensive overview of the four point lightingsystem. While this same information can be found in manytext books and online articles on the subject, moving imagesspeak louder than words. The examples provided on the DVDwill change ones mind that the four point method is only forinterviews and non-narrative content. While shooting outdoors seems to be the best way to workaround lack of lights, not everyone does it correctly. The techniquespresented in the Working with Sunlight section, offersimple, cheap and effective solutions for shooting in direct orindirect sunlight. The key to lighting green screen, white, or black backgroundsis even lighting. The third portion of the DVD is relativelyshort, and one that could have been expanded upon. The hostonly mentions in passing why shooting green over blue screen inthe DV space is better, but could have gone into a more in-depthexplanation. For educators and students working in the DVrealm, who plan on doing green screen work, this section gives abasic understanding on how to proceed, but lacks in-depth informationfor complete understanding. The final section contains tips and tricks for lighting in avariety of situations, including how to light a scene to simulatemoonlight, special effects lighting, and accent lighting. The biggest plus for this DVD is all the video examples wereshot with the Canon XL1s and GL2 camera using the out of thebox lens. This gives the instructor and student excellent exam-BEA—Educating tomorrow’s electronic media professionals 31
