142 LAW 12 – Fouls and MisconductIf a substitute directs an object at the ball with a part of his body other than hishands, thus causing his team to be playing with an extra player:• if the ball is in play and the object strikes the ball, the referees must stop playand either send him off for a double caution, both for unsporting behaviour,the first caution for entering the pitch without the referees’ permission andthe second for directing the object, or send him off directly if by doing sohe denied a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity. They restart playwith an indirect free kick to the opposing team from the position of the ballwhen play was stopped (see Law 13 – Position of free kick)• if the ball is in play and the object does not strike the ball, the referees muststop play if they cannot apply the advantage and send him off for a doublecaution, both for unsporting behaviour, the first caution for entering thepitch without the referees’ permission and the second for throwing theobject. They restart play with an indirect free kick to the opposing teamfrom the position of the ball when play was stopped (see Law 13 – Positionof free kick)If a team official directs an object at the ball with any part of his body:• if the ball is in play and the object strikes the ball, the referees must stop playand expel him from the technical area and its surrounds. Play is restartedwith a dropped ball from the position of the ball when play was stopped,unless play was stopped inside the penalty area, in which case one of thereferees drops the ball on the penalty area line at the point nearest to wherethe ball was located when play was stopped• if the ball is in play and the object does not strike the ball, the refereesmust stop play if they cannot apply the advantage and expel him from thetechnical area and its surrounds.
