LAW 3 – The Number of Players83• stop play, although not immediately if they can apply the advantage• caution the player for entering the pitch without permission• order the player to leave the pitch if necessary (e.g. infringement of Law 4)If the referees stop play, it must be restarted:• with an indirect free kick to the opposing team from the position of theball when play was stopped (see Law 13 – Position of free kick) if there is noother infringement• in accordance with Law 12 if the player also infringes this LawIf a player who is outside the pitch with the referees’ permission and whohas not been substituted re-enters the pitch without the permission of thereferees or the third referee and furthermore commits another cautionableinfringement, the referees send him off for a double caution, e.g. the playerenters without the permission of the referees or the third referee and trips anopponent in a reckless manner. If this infringement is committed with excessiveforce, the player is sent off directly.If the referees stop play, it must be restarted in accordance with Law 12.If a player accidentally crosses one of the boundary lines of the pitch, he is notdeemed to have committed an infringement. If a player leaves the pitch as partof a playing movement, he is not deemed to have committed an infringement.SubstitutesIf a substitute enters the pitch by infringing the substitution procedure orcauses his team to be playing with an extra player, the referees, assisted by theassistant referees, must adhere to the following guidelines:• Stop play, although not immediately if the advantage can be applied• Caution him for unsporting behaviour if his team plays with an extra playeror for infringing the substitution procedure if the substitution was not madecorrectly• Send him off if he denies the opposing team a goal or an obviousgoalscoring opportunity. The number of players in his team is reducedirrespective of whether the offence consists of an infringement of thesubstitution procedure or because his team is playing with an extra player, inwhich case in addition to the substitute sent off, another of the players mustleave the pitch so that his team is then playing with one player less, with anew player being introduced as specified in the section of Law 3 entitled“Players and substitutes sent off”
