The low collection rate for notebooks of around only 50% is caused by the drain of <strong>materials</strong><br />

<strong>from</strong> the numerous illegal exports to e.g. Africa or Asia. Often simple but important manual<br />

disassembly steps are not carried out, such as removing the batteries containing cobalt<br />

which is required for the subsequent special treatment and recovery of the battery metals.<br />

Following the collection losses, these shortcomings in pre-treatment lead to further total<br />

losses of secondary metals. The manual processes are not currently carried out everywhere<br />

in Germany for the following reasons:<br />

- At low and average <strong>raw</strong> material prices, the higher wage costs associated with<br />

manual removal are not fully compensated by the increased income;<br />
