1986Four colleges of advancededucation – Salisbury, Kingston,Torrens and Murray Park –amalgamated to form part ofthe South Australian College ofAdvanced Education (SACAE).1991South Australian College of AdvancedEducation (SACAE) designated one ofonly eight Distance Education Centres.The University of South Australia (UniSA)was established upon the merger ofSAIT and three SACAE campuses.John McDonald appointed firstChancellor; Professor Alan Mead thefirst Vice Chancellor.The City West campuswas officially opened byGovernor General SirWilliam Dean.1994Ian Wark Research InstituteTwo of the University’s keyresearch institutes, the IanWark Research Institute(IWRI) and the Institute forTelecommunications Research,19971988SAIT accepted 11 internationalstudents to study onshore.1992Professor David Robinsonappointed Vice Chancellor.The Hon Dr Basil HetzelAC appointed Chancellorof the University of SouthAustralia.1993UniSA became a foundation member ofthe Australian Technology Network (ATN)federation.UniSA commenced teaching programsoffshore, beginning with the InternationalMBA in Singapore.1998Professor Eleanor Ramsay,the first-ever AustralianPro Vice Chancellorcharged with improvingequity and access toeducation, was appointed.The Distance Education Centre building atUnderdale was opened.(ITR) were officially opened.1996The Unaipon School was opened offeringa range of programs in Aboriginal andAustralian Studies.City West campusUniSA identified sevenunique graduatequalities that describedthe knowledge, skills and personal abilitiesgraduates would require in their professionalcareers.UniSA became the first Australian universityto develop a Statement of Commitment toAustralian Reconciliation.The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre wasestablished.Professor Denise Bradley wasnamed the University’s ViceChancellor and President.Extensively involved innational education policygroups for more than twodecades, in 2008 she chaired the Expert Panelthat undertook the National Review of HigherEducation.Now Emeritus Professor Denise Bradley AC,she was made a Companion of the Orderof Australia, Australia’s highest honour, inrecognition of her service to higher education.UniSA awarded anhonorary doctorateto then President ofSouth Africa, NelsonMandela.1999David KlingbergAM succeeded DrBasil Hetzel AC asChancellor.UniSA won the Business SA Export awardfor education for the first time. TheUniversity won it again in 2000, 2001,2004 and 2006.
