Thursday 29 August at 10.30amADELAIDE CONVENTION CENTREThe Occasional AddressThe Honourable AlexanderDowner ACBA(Hons), Hon DCL, Hon PhDAlexander Downer retired from politicsin 2008 following a distinguished careerspanning 23 years, during which he wasAustralia’s longest-serving Minister forForeign Affairs from March 1996 untilDecember 2007.He also served as the Leader of the FederalOpposition and Leader of the ParliamentaryLiberal Party from May 1994 to January1995.Born in South Australia and educated atGeelong Grammar and Radley CollegeOxford, prior to entering Federal ParliamentMr Downer held a number of seniorpositions in government and the privatesector, including as an economist withWestpac Bank, a diplomat in the <strong>Australian</strong>missions to the European Union and NATO,and as an embassy representative in Belgiumand Luxembourg.He also held a senior advisory role to formerPrime Minister of Australia, the Hon MalcolmFraser, and since 2008 he has served asSecretary General of the United Nations’Special Advisor on Cyprus at the level ofUnder Secretary General.He is also a Visiting Professor of Politicsand International Trade at the University ofAdelaide, and is a partner in the strategicbusiness advisory firm Bespoke Approach aswell as serving on a number of boards.Order of CeremonyProcessional music will be played.The audience is requested to stand forthe entrance of the Academic Procession,Council and Official Party.The <strong>Australian</strong> National Anthem will be sungby Mr Richard Chew, baritone.The Chancellor, Dr Ian Gould AM, BSc(Hons),PhD, FTSE, FAusIMM, CompIEAust, MAICD,will open the ceremony.The Vice Chancellor and President, ProfessorDavid Lloyd BSc(Hons), PhD, CChem, FRSC,will address the ceremony.Mr Nigel Relph BA(Hons), MA, MCIPR,Deputy Vice Chancellor: International andAdvancement, will present The HonourableAlexander Downer AC, for the honorarydegree of Doctor of the University.The Occasional Address will be deliveredby The Honourable Alexander Downer AC,Former Minister for Foreign Affairs andSecretary General of UN Special Advisor onCyprus.The Chancellor, on behalf of the University,will confer awards on the candidates.The Chancellor will close the ceremony.The audience is requested to stand as theOfficial Party, Council, Academic Processionand graduates retire.Aida:Triumphant March and Ballet MusicVerdi: Performed by the CSR SymphonyOrchestra, BratislavaAdvance Australia Fair / Peter DoddsMcCormick
