Andres MichelenaVenezuelan artist, Andrés Michelena, has developed his career asa painter and a conceptual artist. He <strong>of</strong>ten pursues the subject <strong>of</strong>religion and spirituality in his art. This mixed-media paper work,utilizing Chinese newspaper, appropriates Pop <strong>Art</strong> techniques tocreate the image. Michelena comments on the Dalai Lama’sphilosophical view that the 1950 Chinese invasion <strong>of</strong> Tibetexpanded Buddhism throughout the world. Based on this concept,Michelena constructed the central figure <strong>of</strong> Mao withTibetan stamps to represent him with a Buddha-like hair style,giving him the status <strong>of</strong> a master.
