Solar Science WorkshopsSolar Powered Boat ActivitySolar Powered Boat ActivityPower from the sun can be harnessed in many different ways. This clean, environmentally safe form of energy is readilyavailable and is being used to heat water, heat buildings, cook food, provide electricity and many other applications aswell. The Solar Powered Boat Kit uses a high current silicon solar cell to directly power a small electric motor. The shaft of themotor will turn a small plastic propeller when the sun strikes the solar cell. When connected with the correct polarity, thepropeller will produce a force of wind which will push the small balsa wood boat forward. This kit also contains parts and instructions for several scientific experiments. All of the experiments are designed to givea basic understanding of solar cells, magnetism, compass operation, electric DC motors and method of propulsion. Onlysimple hand tools, sandpaper, white glue and tape are required, but not included. In addition, you may wish to customizeand paint your boat. Paint is not included. No batteries and no soldering is required. Our Solar Powered Boat Activitymakes a fun introduction toSolar Energy!andWith No Soldering this activity isideal for all grade levels!Solar Powered Boat Manual Contents:Instructional Lessons & ExperimentsSolar Cell Introduction and Brief History1 Experiment 1 Compass Function2 Experiment 2 Permanent Magnet Function3 Experiment 3 Identifying Solar Cell Polarity4 Experiment 4 DC Motor Function5 Experiment 5 Fan Function6 Experiment 6 Boat PropulsionBoat ConstructionC6983 $24.95Chaney Electronics, Inc. • PO Box 4116 • Scottsdale, AZ 85261 • www.chaneyelectronics.com 19
