A team working on behalf of the NHSLitigation Authority visited thedepartment to interview staff, reviewpaper documentation and protocolsand ensure all risk managementsystems had been implementedproperly. The Trust received a glowingreport.Dr Mary Johnson, Divisional Directorfor Women’s and Children’s Health,said: “This is a fantastic achievementand recognises all the hard work thatstaff from within the Women’s andChildren’s Division and ClinicalGovernance Department have put in.We are totally committed tominimising risk, improving patientsafety and delivering high qualitycare.”Improved Care forDiabetic Mums-to-beA number of developments have ledto improved care for pregnant womenwith diabetes. The Division appointedAlison Leyland as the first DiabeticSpecialist Midwife whose role is toensure women are better supportedthroughout pregnancy. Linked to thisappointment was the launch of a newone-stop clinic which gives diabeticwomen access to a high level ofspecialist care and reduces the numberof hospital appointments they need.Pregnant women can now see theirConsultant Physician, ConsultantObstetrician, Diabetes SpecialistMidwife, Diabetes Specialist Nurse,Dietician and even have a scan in justone appointment. Historically thepatient may have needed fourseparate appointments all in the sameweek.27
