Anothertremendousbenefit to patients,not only on theFylde Coast butalso in SouthCumbria andLancashire, was theopening of the Lancashire CardiacCentre in April 2006. This is goingfrom strength to strength and weintend that the unit will be a nationalcentre of excellence in cardiacservices.We also opened a state-of-the-art DaySurgery Unit. This is now in full swingand we are carrying out many moreprocedures as day cases, whichpatients clearly prefer. The unit hasplayed a critical part in enabling us toimprove length of stay and reduce ourcosts. Again thanks are due toeveryone involved.In the Healthcare Commission ratingswe received “fair” for financialmanagement and “good” for qualityof services. This was a pleasing resultbut we are ambitious and aim toachieve an “excellent” rating in bothcategories in time.We aim to be among the top 10hospitals in the UK - and in someareas we are - but we seek to achievethis in all areas. Achieving FoundationTrust status will assist us to reach ourgoal.I have no hesitation in commendingthis Annual Report to you and to sayto our community that we should bethe hospital of choice for you.Beverly LesterChairman03
REVIEW OF THE YEAR BYTHE CHIEF EXECUTIVELooking back to where we were at the beginning of the yearand where we are now, it is quite staggering to see all that hasbeen achieved. I would firstly like to thank every member ofstaff for their magnificent efforts over the past 12 months inwhat has been the most challenging year in the Trust’s history.In April 2006 we faced the prospect ofa £24m gap between income andexpenditure. This represented around12% of our total turnover. We drewup a radical series of cost reductionprogrammes, which were challengingand difficult to implement. Theseinvolved tough decisions and causedgreat anxiety to staff. One of the mostimpressive outcomes of the year’swork has been the way that staff haveresponded to the challenge to look atways to make savings through clinicalservices being more efficient andresponsive. For example, the reductionand protection of surgical in-patientbeds has reduced the length of timepatients stay in hospital, significantlyreduced cancelled operations andsaved valuable resources. By runningour services more efficiently, it meanswe now need fewer beds so we havebeen able to successfully reduce theoverall number of beds across theTrust by more than 200. This has alsomeant that we have needed fewerstaff and we have successfullyredeployed more than 400 staff intovacant posts.04
