Surgical DivisionOpening of DaySurgery UnitA new £5.7m Day Surgery Unitopened at Victoria Hospital in April2006. The new multi-million poundfacilities have enabled the Division toincrease the number and types ofprocedures carried out as day cases.This means more patients are able tohave their surgery and go home thesame day without the need for anovernight stay in hospital. The unitalso provides a much-improvedenvironment for staff and patients.The Trust was delighted to welcomeworld famous Manchester United bossSir Alex Ferguson to officially openthe new day case facility in October.37
Opening of SurgicalHigh Care UnitPatients recovering from surgery atVictoria Hospital are benefiting fromthe development of a new andpioneering Surgical High Care Unit.Higher staffing levels ensure patientsare given more intensive nursing care.It is hoped that the presence of thenew unit will free up beds on theHigh Dependency Unit for patientswith the greatest need, such as cancerpatients.Matron of the new Unit, MaggieDoughty, said: “We are not intendingthis unit to be a replacement forHigher Dependency but we recognisethat the recovery of some patientswould be helped by being moreclosely monitored. It is a really excitingdevelopment for all concerned.Having all the post-surgery patients inone place means that we can cater fortheir needs more effectively and alsotake the pressure off other wards.”As the unit only takes post-operativepatients, nursing staff do not have thesame volume of paperwork as normalwards that deal with admissions. Thismeans that nursing staff can dedicatemore time to patient care.Transfer ofOrthopaedics fromSouth Shore HospitalOrthopaedic patients are now beingtreated under one roof thanks to newspacious facilities which opened atVictoria Hospital in February 2007.The unit, which includes a day case38
