Designing with LIghTAPPLICATIONTask lighting requires the evaluation of both the type of light source and placement of the light.Three types of criteria can help: quantity of light, quality of light and color of light.1. Quantity of light output is calculated by foot-candle, which is determined by how far apartthe lights are as well as how close to the light source you can stand. The recommendedoutput is 50 foot-candles for task applications.1. If one stands too close to a mirror and the lights are too far apart, the 50 foot-candle levelcan’t be achieved. Typically, the closer one stands to the mirror, the shorter the distancebetween the lights needs to be.1. Modular lights and pendants allow for the lights to be positioned closer together, whichshortens the distance that you have to stand away from the mirror.1. Please note that the quantity of light is impacted by a variety of factors such as roomcolor, natural light from window or skylight, or other light sources in the bath space.2. Quality of the light is how well lights are positioned so they don’t create shadows onone’s face.1. Side lighting creates the most even lighting for the face, provided that it generates therequired 50 foot-candles. Top-down lights provide basic general lighting and can adddramatic accents over areas you wish to illuminate, but they are typically not ideal formakeup application or shaving.1. In all cases, make sure that light is not blocked by a cabinet or mirror, which can cast shadows.124 | APPLICATIONS
