The companies became apart of the world’s largest exchange operator in February2008, as a result of the merger between two industry leaders– U.S. Nasdaq and Nordic OMX. Before that, in November2007, through an agreement with the Government ofArmenia, OMX AB became the owner of 100% of the sharesof the Armenian Stock Exchange and the Central Depositoryof Armenia, both open joint stock companies.Armenian Stock Exchange ojsc was established by theSecurities Market Members Association in 2001, as a selfregulatoryorganization. Later, in October 2007 it wasdemutualized and transformed into an open joint stockcompany. On January 27, 2009, Armex was officiallyrenamed NASDAQ OMX Armenia. NASDAQ OMX Armeniacore activities include securities listing and admission toexchange trading; providing electronic platform for trading insecurities, interbank credits, currency and REPO agreements.The exchange also discloses information on public companiesand trading in all its markets. By promoting an efficient andtransparent securities market, the stock exchange strives, onthe one hand, to facilitate the access to capital for the mostcompetitive Armenian companies, and, on the other, toprovide domestic and foreign investors with the bestopportunities to invest in the Armenian economy.Since June 5, 2009, the Central Depository of Armenia (CDA)is a 100% owned subsidiary of NASDAQ OMX Armenia. Itprovides services of a centralized custodian, includingpersonal securities account maintenance and shareholdersregistry keeping. The CDA has a significant role to play inprotecting the lawful interests of security holders, includingminority shareholders.
