Golden sandy beaches abound on the eastern coast of Cyprus, in the free part<br />

of the Ammochos<strong>to</strong>s (Famagusta) area. The popular holiday resort of Agia<br />

Napa, once a sleepy fishing village, buzzes with life being a true paradise for<br />

lovers of the sea, water sports and nightlife.The night life and clubs are a<br />

major attraction for all age groups, while the many restaurants offer both local<br />

delicacies and international cuisine.<br />

Some of the most renowned beaches are Nissi Beach, Makronissos Beach<br />

and Kryo Nero (Harbour) Beach. One can also visit the south-eastern tip of<br />

the region (Cape Gkreko) with its secluded coves, impressive cliff <strong>to</strong>p views<br />

and sea caves. But there is more <strong>to</strong> the area. Inland one can also admire a<br />

number of Byzantine and Frankish monuments and museums. The magical<br />

landscape was an inspiration <strong>to</strong> Greek Nobel poet laureate, George Seferis.<br />

The region is the main pota<strong>to</strong> producing area on the island and is known as<br />

Kokkinochoria, meaning “red soil villages”, thanks <strong>to</strong> the fertile red earth in<br />

which they are grown. The villages of this area are equally renowned for their<br />

folk poets and traditional song performers, who are regarded as the most<br />

inspired on the island.<br />
