Welcome to Woodstock Park from The Club Secretary
Good evening and welcome to the
DMA Stadium.
Our visitors are local rivals Whitstable
Town. Welcome to them
and the match officials.
Whitstable lost their managers Jim
and Danny Ward who left for
Ramsgate. Like when they left us
to join this evenings visitors they
took many of the players with
them leaving Whitstable to rebuild.
They have started the season
with four league defeats which
has left them bottom of the
league.
Our last home match saw an impressive
display from The Brickies
which resulted in our first victory
of the season. This was followed
by an even better performance
against a full strength Merstham
side which saw us progress to the
next round of the Robert Dyas
League Cup. So it was with much
expectation that we visited Carshalton
Athletic on Saturday. Carshalton
play on an artificial pitch
and I’m not sure we really got the
hang of it. Played in sweltering
heat we never got started and
Carshalton deserved their 3-0 win.
It really was “after the Lord
Mayors Show”. Stefan Wright was
taken off on a stretcher in this
game. At the time of writing these
notes it is not clear how serious
Stefan’s injury is but it looks like
he has injured his ribs
You will notice from the first line of
these notes that our ground has
been renamed The DMA stadium.
DMA are Mechanical and Electrical
Engineers who are providing their
labour services for free for all
problems we have in their field of
expertise. They have just overhauled
our floodlights and are liaising
with the Floodlight manufacturers,
Abacus, on our behalf
as we have a few issues with
them.
Our next match is very important
to the club. We play Kent Invicta
League side Seven Acre and
Sidcup in the Preliminary round of
The Emirates FA Cup. This match
is worth £1925 to the winners. Of
course we should win but how
many times have we lost to sides
in cup competitions that we felt
we should have beaten? If we lose
it could have implications on our
playing squad. Seven Acre &
Sidcup beat Sevenoaks Town in a
replay in the previous round. Sevenoaks
Town are one of the favourites
to win the Southern
Counties East League (Still Kent
League to me!) and from what I
have been told were outplayed in
both games by Seven Acres &
Sidcup. The match is being played
on Friday evening (7:45pm) at
Thamesmead’s Bayliss Avenue
ground. On Bank Holiday Monday
we play Ramsgate away (3:00pm)
Next match here is on the 5 th September
against Guernsey. This
kicks off at 1 PM.
JOHN

Whitstable Town
A BRIEF HISTORY
The first recorded football match took place
in the town during October 1885 when, under
the name "Whitstable United", a team played
Whitstable College. Earliest use of the name
"Whitstable Town" can be traced to the following
season (1886-87) when matches were
played were played on a Friday at "Mr. Saddleton's
field" - an area of ground near the
railway station. The use of the club's current
Belmont ground began in January 1888 with
a friendly game against Herne Bay. There
was a change in name briefly to "Whitstable
Swifts" in 1893 but reverted to "Whitstable
Town" just two years later. Whitstable Town
played their first competitive game in 1897 -
a Kent Junior Cup match that resulted in a 7-
1 defeat by Dover Star FC. Shortly after this,
the club joined the "East Kent League" and
later played in both the "New Brompton" and
"Faversham & District" Leagues. The club
folded in 1904 only to be reformed in 1908.
In 1908-09 Whitstable Town joined the Kent
League Division 2 and achieved a respectable
fourth place in their first season. Two teams
were also entered in the Thanet League and
they were both successful in lifting both the
first and second division titles. After one season
in the New Brompton League following
the Second World War, Whitstable returned
to Kent League in 1947-48 (also playing in
the K Division of the New Brompton League.)
Success came to the club as they won the
Division 2 title in the 1949-50 season and
gained promotion to the First Division until
the League disbanded in 1959. These were
sometimes considered the glory years as
Whitstable temporarily became a professional
club but the problems of competing with
much wealthier clubs proved difficult and put
considerable pressure on the clubs finances.
The loss of the Kent League came as a hammer
blow. Wealthier clubs moved onward and
upward to the more prestigious Southern
League leaving behind a small band of teams
fighting for survival. Town joined the Aetolian
League briefly. Gone were the days of the
money-spinning East Kent derby games
against the likes of Folkestone, Dover, Sittingbourne
and Margate. Matches against far
off London-based sides were no substitute
and, inevitably, the 1960's became a period
of financial problems and decay. The Kent
League was reformed in 1967 and Town rejoined
immediately. However, this was not
the Kent League of the "heady" 1930s and
1950s. Populated by a large number of reserve
sides from Southern League Clubs,
there was little to appeal to supporters... but
it was a start. Folkestone, Deal, Faversham
Town, Chatham and, of course, our oldest
and nearest rivals, Herne Bay. The club responded
- building a club house and attempting
to restore the Belmont to its former glory
on limited funds. Success on the pitch had
been elusive since the re-formation of the
Kent League. Despite a regular "top 10" position,
the best league finishes had been two
"third place" spots. Cup competitions have
yielded greater success but there has been
heartache as well.... "Runners up" in Kent
League Cup twice and the Kent Senior Trophy
on three occasions. The only major reward
came in 1979-80 - a 4-3 victory over Chatham
to lift the Kent League Cup at the Bull
Ground at Sittingbourne. Trailing 2-0 and 3-1
in the final, the team recovered to score two
late goals and an "extra time" winner. The
club achieved it best FA Vase run during
1996-97 reaching the last 16...just 3 matches
from an appearance at Wembley in this
nationwide competition. With everyone praying
for a home draw, luck deserted us...North
Ferriby United (near Hull) ...away. A tight 1-0
defeat ended our dream on Humberside.2006
-2007 marked the best season in the club’s
history. Under Marc Seager’s leadership we
saw the team win the Kent League and the
Kent Senior Trophy. A treble was just missed
out on the last day of the season as we ended
up as runners-up in the Kent League Cup.
We also had a good run in the FA Cup ending
with a narrow home defeat against Margate
in front of 1,144 people. The championship
brought about the long awaited promotion to
the Ryman League. The first year in the Ryman
League (2007-2008) started shakily but
an excellent end to the season brought us
into mid table and respectability. Again after
a difficult start to the second season it was a
mirror image of the previous year as we
found ourselves again in the lower reaches of
mid table. The following five seasons saw a
number of managerial changes with the side
always providing a sprint finish to the season
to ensure survival. Ex referee Gary Johnson
took over as chairman at the start of the
2012-2013 season. Jim and Danny Ward took
over as the management team from Nicky
Southall at the start of this season. giving us
our best finishing position in the league as
we ended up eighth. The Wards moved back
to Ramsgate in the close season and Will
Graham has taken over the reins.

DON’T get me wrong, I enjoy a good 0-0
draw. Defences on top, star strikers in back
pockets, keepers smiling with their clean
sheets.
And there’s something beautiful about an
organised 1-0 away win.
You know the ones. Where a team shows
zero ambition, plays one up front, defends
superbly, frustrates the opposition by slowing
the game down and then nicks a winner
from their only foray into the opposition
penalty box.
I love those games. It shows all the discipline
and nous required to win a game of
football and get three points.
But most of the time it’s great to see an attacking
team tear the opposition apart, pull
them all over the pitch and bang in a load of
goals.
A few Non-League strikers have been filling
their boots already this season.
Defenders best look away now, because
what better place to start that Winchester
City hot-shot Warren Bentley.
After their opening two games in the Evo-
Stik League Southern South & West, the 24-
year had scored nine goals. That’s NINE
goals, in TWO games.
Just 42 minutes into the new season, Bentley
had five as the greedy goal machine
helped his side batter Bridgwater Town 7-2.
The following Tuesday he clearly let his level
drop, managing just FOUR against Wimborne
Town. Clearly the concept of defending
had been abandoned altogether with
Winchester running out 6-5 winners.
You won’t be surprised to know he’ll soon be
re-setting his 30 goal target if his ratio
keeps up.
Then there’s Gosport Borough’s Justin Bennett.
He’s also seemingly decided hat-tricks
are so last season.
The top scorer in the Conference South last
season, Bennett hammered four past Weston-super-Mare
last Tuesday.
It’s caught on in the FA Cup. AFC Liverpool’s
Steve Jones hit five in their 9-2 demolition
of Chadderton in the extra preliminary
round.
He wasn’t the only five-star show with Melford
Simpson helping himself to the same
number as Shoreham brushed St Francis
Rangers aside 8-0.
And Luke Barlone fired in four as Coleshill
steamrolled Ellesmere Rangers 11-0. At the
same stage last year, the Midland League
side also racked up double figures.
Add in two half-way line strikes from Oxford
City’s Bradley Bubb and Ashton Town’s Danny
Coid, who got his against Widnes after
just three seconds, and this season is already
a goal feast.
But someone scoring nine goals in two
games doesn’t happen all that often so we
sent The NLP cameras along to get some
snaps of Bentley with his Winchester City
team-mates before Saturday’s game at Yate
Town.
The final score? 0-0. Of course it was. Bet it
was a good game though.
From the Programme editor
We all know that football is a fickle
game and I see that Kent Football
has seen its first managerial casualty
with the sacking by Ashford
Town of their manager Paul Chambers
after their 5-1 defeat in the
FA Cup extra preliminary round by
Cray Valley. Assistant Lloyd Blackman
has left also. Taking over is
ex Brickie Danny Lye.
Not sure if it’s me but the Sky
commentators seem to have forgotten
some of the basic laws of
the game. I was watching Liverpool
v Bournemouth and Bournemouth
thought they had scored an
early goal only for the referee to
rule the ”goal” out for the forward
climbing on a defender’s back. It
was a blatant foul in my mind but
the sky commentators kept on going
on about it. To have both
hands on someone’s shoulders to
gain height is surely a foul,. The
other thing about that game I noticed
was that Skirtel was up to
his old tricks in pulling players
physically back in the penalty area,
when will a referee be brave
enough to award a penalty in a
move that would surely be penalised
outside the box! Rant nearly
over!! But one more thing. The
commentators often say “at this
level you cant miss chances”, a
phrase that mystifies me as at any
level “you can’t afford to miss
chances !!”
The match against Carshalton was
played on their new 3G pitch, and
it’s the first time that I have actually
concentrated more on the
pitch than on the game!! I’m still
not sure about them down here in
the South. The constant smell of
rubber and the puffs of black particles
throughout the game did put
me off. Carshalton have a quintessential
old fashion non league
ground and to me a 3G pitch
didn’tlook or feel right.
Cup time is coming up and its always
an exciting time of the year.
Will we need a TV gantry when we
get to the first round of the Emirates
FA Cup!! What suit shall I
wear when we reach the FA Trophy
final!!! Ah well one can
dream!
Match Reports by
Tony Rickson
Saturday 15th August 2015
Ryman League Div 1 South
Sittingbourne 2 South Park 1 Att
87
An excellent first half performance ensured
a welcome first victory of the season
for Sittingbourne.
South Park, who came into the game
with a 100 per cent record from their
opening two matches of the season,
fought back strongly in the second half
but Sittingbourne defended stubbornly to
just hold out.
At the heart of it was manager Nick Davis,
who with three regular central defenders
missing, had to pick himself for
the first time this year.
It was a gamble that paid off handsomely,
with Davis still showing a great ability
to read a game, as well as a tremendous
determination to see the job through.
He was one of four changes from the
team that lost in midweek to Hastings
with Steff Wright returning after suspension,
Hicham Akhazzan back from holiday,
and Jack Steventon promoted from
substitute. Out of the starting line-up
went Adam Williams, Jack North, Ollie
Brown and Billy French.
Wright and Akhazzan stepped into the
two wide midfield roles and immediately
showed how much they had been
missed, with their attacking flair combined
with sensible defending when the
need arose.
And it was Wright who gave Sittingbourne
a flying start with a goal after
just six minutes on a bright August afternoon.
Jake Beecroft floated a free-kick
beyond the far post, Davis put it back in
the middle, the ever-dangerous Harry
Smith had a shot blocked, and Wright
tucked away the loose ball.
It was the first time Sittingbourne had
led this season and it showed in their
play, as they attacked confidently with
pace and innovation, and constantly won
the ball back from slower-to-react South
Park players all over the pitch.
Captain Tom Brunt, who scored a great
goal against South Park last season, got
forward to rattle the bar in the 20th minute
as Sittingbourne dominated.
And they made it 2-0 just after the halfhour
when Beecroft found Akhazzan, and
after a typically mazy run into the area
he fired the ball across goal where Smith
diverted in his first (of many?) goals this
season.
A third goal would surely have tied it up
and Sittingbourne almost got it in the
41st minute when Miles Cornwell crossed
perfectly for Smith to head powerfully
goalwards. But South Park’s experienced
Wastell, everybody’s favourite opposition
keeper, dived brilliantly to his right to
save.
It had been truly one of Sittingbourne’s
best 45 minutes for a long time, judging
by both the quality and energy of their
play.
But Wright went off injured early in the
second half and South Park gradually got
more and more on top.
Sittingbourne still had their moments
and Adam Williams’ bullet shot was
palmed away shortly before another sub,
Dave Pilcher, saw his shot deflected onto
the far post. And Beecroft almost capped
another impressive midfield display by
breaking clear on Akhazzan’s pass only
to overrun the ball.
At the other end, Davis showed all his
magnificent commitment to clear a
South Park shot off the line, but he was
just unable to get a block in when Lavery
carefully placed his 82nd minute 20-
yarder inside the post to pull it back to 2
-1.
It was what’s known in football as
squeaky bum time but Sittingbourne just
held onto their lead in the final frantic
minutes to complete what was still a deserved
win over the whole 90 minutes.
Sittingbourne: Molloy, Brunt, Lee, Davis,
Steventon, Bankole, Wright (Pilcher 57
mins), Beecroft, Smith, Cornwell
(Williams 65 mins), Akhazzan (Gonnella
78 mins). Subs not used Obasa, Brown

Match Reports by
Tony Rickson
Tuesday 18th August, Robert Dyas Isthmian
League Cup 1st Round. Merstham 1
Sittingbourne 2, att 84
Exhilarating Sittingbourne deservedly won
through to the next round of the Robert Dyas
League Cup by knocking out opponents from a
higher division.
This was no low-key cup-tie between
squad players with a result that didn’t
really matter, it was a full-on battle between
two first choice squads who are
still finding their feet this season.
Sittingbourne went into the match
boosted by their first win of the season,
2-1 over South Park on Saturday,
while newly-promoted Merstham
have yet to gain a point in the Ryman
Premier after three successive
defeats.
This win was a huge boost for Sittingbourne,
who were twice beaten by these opponents
last season, conceding eight goals in all.
And in at least one of those matches they
were very heavily outclassed, so it shows
how much the team has come on since then
under the impressive management of Nick
Davis.
The boss kept his place in defence for this
match but made three other changes – Adam
Williams and Fred Obassa coming in up front,
replacing Harry Smith and Miles Cornwell,
and George Crimmen returning in defence for
the unlucky-to-be-left-out Jack Steventon.
Sittingbourne made a storming start to the
game, really taking the match to Merstham.
Obassa, in his first start, used his extreme
pace to get a chance but shot wide, and this
was followed by Hicham Akhazzan putting a
free-kick wide, Tom Brunt volleying over,
Stefan Wright shooting well over after another
excellent build-up, and Oli Bankole having
a shot deflected just wide. And all this is the
opening 15 minutes.
Merstham, who always try to play football,
gradually got into the game but had a ‘goal’
chalked off for offside, and Adam Molloy
made a good tip-over from a shot from distance.
It was an excellent first half performance by
Sittingbourne, with the defence stiffened by
the return of Crimmen, the midfield working
hard, and the front two a constant threat to
Merstham with their energy and skill.
But Sittingbourne played well in the first half
on Saturday only to lose their grip on the
game after half-time.
This time it was different and two minutes
into the second half Sittingbourne were
ahead. Obassa won a free-kick which Jake
Beecroft curved in towards the first half.
Crimmen got to it first and his header took a
deflection off a Merstham defender on its
way into the goal.
Wright’s hard running created two great
chances for himself, but his finishing lacked
composure, and he had to be taken
off after getting himself
booked and running the gauntlet
of a red card from a less tolerant
referee for another overenthusiastic
challenge.
While Sittingbourne were adjusting
to their second half changes,
Merstham equalised. A 65th minute
free-kick out on the left was
driven in hard and low and Molloy couldn’t
hold on to it, Gunner netting the loose ball
from close range.
Sittingbourne responded magnificently to the
setback and drove forward again with Smith,
now on as a substitute, causing the
Merstham defence all sorts of problems, having
a header cleared off the line and seeing
another one roll along the top of the bar.
But just when a penalty shoot-out looked on
the cards, Sittingbourne won it. And what a
glorious goal it was, too. Steventon’s long
throws were putting Merstham’s defence into
a panic, and when they cleared it only fell to
captain Brunt 30 yards out. He raced to the
edge of the box, exchanged what we used to
call a wall pass with Akhazzan, and blazed
his shot first time into the top corner with a
goal fit to win any game.
No wonder Sittingbourne’s players celebrated
wildly. Back-to-back wins, a squad willing to
run themselves into the ground, and a nice
spirit and determination about them. It’s going
to be a long, old season, of course, but
these are encouraging times for Sittingbourne.
Sittingbourne: Molloy, Brunt, Lee, Davis
(Steventon 52 mins), Crimmen, Bankole,
Wright (Brown 64 mins), Beecroft, Obasa
(Smit 63 mins), Williams, Akhazzan.

The
Chairman’s
Column
There were two things in common with our recent two wins. Our Manager
played in both of them! We are very pleased with Nick's efforts
so far and it is easy to see his passion for the club when he does have
to play. Hopefully when all the squad are back we will get some kind
of consistency which is lacking at the moment.
A great win the previous Saturday and on the Tuesday night but the
Saturday just gone was not a good performance with little for us to
shout about. Even our loyal band of travelling supporters were subdued
and the two first half goals we conceded killed the match.
Tonight sees the visit of Whitstable and hopefully a midweek match with
as good support and content as last year. That was quite a night. Tonight
is the start of a very important week for us with an FA Cup tie at
Thamesmead Friday night against Seven Acre & Sidcup and an away
match at Ramsgate on BH Monday. How we would love three wins! and
The FA Cup can be such an important help to Finances.
The committee continue to work hard with the ground and we just have
a new certificate for the floodlights and all bulbs are now working, so
tonight will see them back to tip top condition. It is great to be part of a
committee that are sticking to their guns keeping a realistic hold on finances.
The future with a new ground is exciting but we need to hold
the club together in harmony to get to that point.
Don't forget to do your best to get more people through the gate. We
need more if we are to bring the success you the loyal ones deserve.
