Of particular interest is the section at the end (pp. 113-127) where Haug lists 100
instruments, which can be order from him. In his introduction he gives some
information on ordering and purchasing terms, before listing the individual items. Prepayment
is requested, of at least half the purchase price. Additional items might be
manufactured on request.
His list of instruments is subdivided into those of mechanical, physical, optical and
geometrical interest. They include a musical box, astronomical clocks, alarm clocks and
pedometers, barometers, microscopes, sextants, globes and spheres, magnets and
scientific instruments for educational purposes.
There was apparently a second issue without the list of instruments, but with an engraved
plate.
Not in Zinner, Astronomische Instrumente; collation as the Göttingen copy; Oxford apparently has a copy
with an inserted engraved plate. KVK, RLIN and OCLC list copies at Göttingen, and Oxford only.
Elocution and Articulation
41.
HERRIES, John. The Elements of Speech. London, Edward and Charles Dilly, 1773.
$1500
8vo, pp. xvi, 259; large folding printed table (short tear at inner fold) bound in; uncut in
contemporary half calf, gilt-lettered spine label; corners bumped and edges rubbed, some wear to
marbled paper sides; a clean and crisp copy.
First edition of one of the most important eighteenth century treatises on elocution, with
a detailed treatment of articulation. Herries (died 1781), an itinerant lecturer who taught
at Dublin, Edinburgh, Oxford and London, concentrates on the mechanisms of speech
production. He deals with the physiology of the organs of speech, the classification of
sounds, formation of vowels, the alphabet, cultivation of the voice in children, speech
impediments, and teaching the deaf and dumb. His advice on correct breathing, emphasis
and effective delivery is useful for the public speaker, singer, or actor alike.
Textile Technology
42.
HESS, Johann Rudolf. Beschreibung von den Kamm- und Spinn-Maschinen auf Wolle
und Baumwolle eingerichtet. Mit acht verschiedenen Kupfern. Zurich, Orell, Füssli &
Co., 1806. $2400
8vo, pp. 23, [1], with eight large folding engraved plates boud at the end; some light spotting and
dust-soiling; paste-paper spine, a little dog-eared, else fine.
Sole edition, very rare, of a fine work of original textile technology. Hess presents
improved spinning machines, which can be used both for wool and for cotton. He gives
detailed instructions with specific reference to the plates, explains the construction and
design of the machinery, and the specific function of each part.
