Small 12mo in 8s and 4s, ll. [125], a few pages shaved at foot, just touching signature letters;<br />

contemporary full mottled calf, spine in compartments, decoratively gilt, gilt-lettered spine label,<br />

joints a little dry, else fine; from the Macclesfield library, with book plate to front pastedown and<br />

blindstamp to title; a fine copy.<br />

Later edition of an early ready-reckoner, a compilation of multiplication tables first<br />

published in 1585 and attributed to a piemontese mathematician Monte Reale. The first<br />

section contains multiplication tables, the second a brief military interlude with<br />

instructions on how to calculate simple battle or parade formations with a given number<br />

of soldiers. The remaining chapters deal with interest rate calculations and exchange<br />

rates.<br />

The first edition had been published in 1585, and apparently there were two more<br />

editions in 1633 and 1645 before the present one.<br />

rubbed, but fine.<br />

Later edition of a handy conversion guide for weights and measures, with the tradition<br />

tall narrow shape, designed to fit into the tradesmen's pocket. Earlier editions had<br />

appeared in 1802 and 1810.<br />

All editions are rare; Harvard has 1810 edition.<br />

spine a little chipped and corners worn; a crisp and very wide-margined copy.<br />

First edition of this very attractive and curious introduction into the art of 'chiromania' ,<br />

or talking with one's hands, used not only in mime, but in a wide range of situations. The<br />

author begins with a historical overview, and then discusses the use of hands and fingers<br />

in counting and calculating in classical antiquity. The left hand indicates numbers up to
