A curious annual for the Agricultural Society of the Departement Seine, founded in 1797. Given is a list of members - among them Dupont de Nemours, who, after a period in America spent time in France to research and edit the works of Turgot, followed by associated and foreign members, including Jefferson, president of the United States. Gedruckt zu Franckfurt am Mayn, Sigmund Feyrabend, 1586. $17000 Small 4to, ll. 119, (lacking the final blank) title printed in red and black, woodcut to title, woodcut arms at the beginning of the dedication and 122 full page woodcuts, the large majority printed on rectos only, only the first nine and final five woodcuts are printed on recto and verso; title page a little dust-soiled, fore-margin of dedication shaved, just touching letters, but no loss; paper occasionally lightly browned, but in all very clean and crisp, with strong impressions; eighteenth century full vellum over boards, spine title in manuscript. First edition of the first book entirely devoted to women's dress: Amman's famous depiction of women of all classes. Illustrated are costumes from all over Europe and one of an American native ('ein Fraw auss Peruvia'), arranged by social rank, (from empress to servant) and by country and city. Patricians, burghers, peasants and nuns from different cities, regions and countries are depicted in sixteenth century costume. 'Amman's woodcuts are of great importance since they give a vivid, manifold and mostly realistic picture of late sixteenth century fashion, when the 'new Spanish style' conquered
all of Europe. Accessories and head-dress give valuable information on social conventions. An eight-line verse by Konrad Lautenbach is printed half above and half below the illustrations explaining the figure represented in a jocose manner' (see Erdmann 25). The cuts, which are printed only on the rectos, except for a few at beginning and end, are by Jost Amman (1539-1591) one of the foremost artists of his time. An edition with Latin text was published later the same year. 'The style of the figures in the Frauwenzimmer is very different from that of Amman's 1577 Trachtenbuch whose plates were cut by Hans Weigel. The spontaneous rendition of the figures, especially compared with those that also appear in the earlier book …, suggests that perhaps Amman himself may have cut the wood blocks for the Frauwenzimmer (J.A. Olian, Sixteenth century costume books, in 'Dress', 3, 1977, p. 28). VD16, L-727; C. Strategonon. Versuch die Kriegsführung durch ein Spiel anschaulich darzustellen. Ansbach, in Commission der Dolfußischen Buchhandlung, 1830. $3700 8vo, pp. xxxv, [i] blank, 145, [3] imprint, explanation of plates, errata, with 4 printed tables bound in the text, and 4 large fold-out lithograph plates bound at end, three of them hand-coloured; some light spotting; contemporary thin buff boards, some discolouring to spine and some staining to upper board; an attractive copy. First edition, very rare, of a fascinating attempt at teaching military strategy and tactics with the help of a game. The author gives a brief overview of existing military games, and distinguishes them especially from the rules of chess. This educational game, he maintains is particularly suitable for young cadets, because it trains the mind, and enables young soldiers to visualise troop movements, anticipate counter-attacks, and, moreover, keep a 'cool head' in the face of adversity. Detailed description of the terrain, the soldiers, troops and the equipment follow, and instructions are given on how the playing surface should be arranged. Most of it is illustrated on the very attractive hand-coloured plates bound at the end. The movements of individual units are prescribed. The rules of the game are supported by extensive quotations from military textbooks. Overall a fascinating, if somewhat elaborate, game with intricate rules giving military strategists a chance to trial run battle formations, attack scenarios, and even orderly retreats. The coloured plates show figures and terrain features to be cut out for use as markers and playing tokens. Napoleon famously maintained that he could mathematically eliminate chance from a battle by carefully calculating every move and countermove beforehand; the originator of this game clearly thought that with the help of Strategonon his soldiers could do the same. Very rare, just one copy listed in NUC (Cleveland Public Library), RLIN and OCLC add two copies at the Dutch Minstery of Defense and Göttingen University Library.
