The Association of Therapeutic Spas of the Czech
Republic was created as a special interest
professional coalition of spa corporations shortly
after the Velvet Revolution in the former
Czechoslovakia, and it has as its goal to maintain
and guarantee the therapeutic standards of the
above spa corporations. At the present time, the
Association comprises 44 spa corporations from all
the spas in the Czech Republic that are recognized
by all state authorities and organs of the Czech
Republic, and are associated with the public health
service. The Association of Therapeutic Spas of the
Czech Republic is a member of the European Spas
Association, headquartered in Brussels, whose
credo is to maintain and guarantee the therapeutic
spa industry across Europe.
A Brief History of Czech Spas
The spa industry in the Czech Republic has a
tradition that is already several hundred years old.
Significant expansion of the spas took place mainly
in the 18th century when, thanks to developments
in science and medicine, all the empirical
observations of the positive effects of natural
curative resources on humans acquired medical
and scientific status, and therapeutic spas in the
Czech Republic became an inseparable part of the
medical establishment.
Maintaining the curative character of spas is very
difficult in these times of market forces, but in spite
of that, it has been the emphasis on the curative
aspect of the spas that has gained such a
reputation for Czech spas in many countries of the
world.
Spa stays in the Czech Republic covered
by public health insurance
With the entry of the Czech Republic into the
European Union, all citizens of member states can
take advantage of the spa industry in the Czech
Republic through their public health insurance.
Every citizen of the European Union can,
therefore, take a spa cure in the Czech Republic

Therapeutic Spas of the Czech Republic – Association of Therapeutic Spas of the Czech Republic

country. Many clients from member states of the
EU, especially Germany, come to take the cure in
Czech spas under a variety of health insurance

Carlsbad is the main spa town in West Bohemia,
360 – 390m above sea level. It was founded
around 1350 by the Holy Roman Emperor and
King of Bohemia, Charles IV. Its grand thoroughfares
and colonnades are surrounded by tranquil wooded
hills crisscrossed with hiking and cycling paths great to
walk at any time of the year. When citizens and visitors
to Carlsbad walk on these paths, they can enjoy
wonderful views of the town nestled in the valley
between the hills. A busy social calendar, numerous
festivals and international conferences make this, the
largest spa town in the Czech Republic, one of the
most popular places in the world and a favourite
among the rich and famous. Carlsbad’s fame is also
partly due to the famous Becherovka – a liqueur
sometimes called the 13th spring – the Mattoni brand of
mineral water, Carlsbad spa wafers and Moser crystal
ware. The nearby international airport makes the town
easy to reach.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
Carlsbad’s 12 springs are rich in sodium, bicarbonate
and sulphates. The different springs are very similar to
each other as far as chemical composition is
concerned, but come out of the ground at different
temperatures and contain differing amounts of CO2.
Mineral-rich mud from a nearby source is also used in
treatments. The water and mud are used to treat
patients with digestive and musculoskeletal problems,
diabetes and obesity.
Free time activities
In the beautiful picturesque valley is an 18-hole golf
course one of the oldest golf clubs in Bohemia; a golf
hall equipped with simulators; tennis courts, indoor
and outdoor; modern shooting range; swimming
pools; snooker, bowling, football and squash; riding
facilities; skateboarding, karate; sightseeing in the town
with an experienced guide; regular concerts on the
colonnades and in local churches; art auctions. The
town also has museums with exhibitions devoted to
nature, spas, porcelain and glass, a cinema, a theatre,
dance halls, casinos and nightclubs.

Bečov nad Teplou: a town with a Gothic castle and
a Baroque chateau.
Loket: historic town centre surrounded on three sides by
the River Ohře and dominated by a Přemyslid dynasty
era Gothic castle dating from the 12th century (the local
museum also has a remarkable collection of porcelain).
Observation towers: Bučina near Lázně Kyselka,
Diana, Doubská hora, Goethe Tower, Plešivec near
Abertamy, Charles IV Tower.

famous liqueur, guided tour of part of the distillery.

Andělská Hora: bulky Gothic castle ruins towering
high up on a rocky outcrop with views across the
surrounding countryside.
Krásno: former tin mining settlement which
experienced its heyday in the 16th century. The mine
tower, the machine room of the Vilém mine and an
exhibition of mine equipment and technology serve as
reminders of the settlement’s mining past.

arienbad lies in a beautiful wide valley in
West Bohemia, 576 – 626m above sea level.
An almost 20km wide strip of forest
crisscrossed with numerous hiking trails passes right
through the spa. Marienbad enjoys an excellent
reputation around the world both for its treatment
methods and effective natural curative resources, and
for its picturesque, enchanting surroundings. Almost
100 cold springs have been discovered in and around
the town, all with a high concentration of CO2; some
were discovered as early as the 16th century. A real
pearl among the local neo-classical buildings is the spa
colonnade erected in 1889; the spa district is
dominated by the so-called ‘Singing Fountain’ which
provides entertainment in the form of music and light
performances.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
Indications in Marienbad, in contrast to other spas, can
be very varied. This is mainly because the composition
of the springs is chemically very diverse. The following
diseases are treated here: diseases of the kidneys and
urinary tract, the lymphatic system, the nerves, organic
nerve diseases, diseases of the digestive tract, diabetes,
non-specific illnesses of the respiratory system, skin
diseases and diseases of the locomotive apparatus.

Free time activities
Marienbad can boast the second oldest golf course in
Europe, founded by King Edward VII of England in
1905. There are also a minigolf course, tennis courts,
swimming pools, saunas, solariums, fitness centres,
a riding school, yachting, a sports equipment rental
centre, fishing, hunting, skiing, hiking, cycling and
cross-country skiing trails. Tourists can also visit the
local museum with exhibitions on the town’s history, an
open air geological park, the Frederic Chopin
memorial, a theatre, cinema, concert hall, art galleries,
discotheques, casinos and amusement arcades, as well
as taking educational excursions out of town.

Cheb: a once strategically situated town with
a Romanesque chateau and many Gothic, Renaissance
and Baroque buildings and merchants’ houses, such as
the Špalíček and Valdštejn Houses.
Smraďoch: nature trail across a peat bog with small
mud volcanoes whose eruptions of sulphur and CO2
give the place an unforgettable atmosphere.
Kladská – educational trail: that runs around Kladský
Pond on the edge of the Kladské Rašeliny national
nature reserve in the part named Tajga.

rantiškovy Lázně, founded in 1793, lies in the
western corner of Bohemia. This small spa town
has preserved its early 20th-century atmosphere
and is regarded as one of the most picturesque spas in
the country thanks to its neo-classical spa buildings and
pavilions. The spa has a gentle climate typical of foothill
country, incredibly clean air and a tranquil ambience
without the hustle and bustle of town life. The
surrounding parkland is ideal for walks to the sound of
promenade music. All this increases the effect of the
mineral springs and attracts those staying at the spa as
well as countless visitors to the town.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
Some 21 local alkaline springs, sulphur and iron rich
mud and natural gas are all used to treat patients with
cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal complaints,
gynaecological problems and infertility, as well as
patients who have recently suffered heart attacks.
Free time activities
The town has fitness centres, a solarium, the
Aquaforum water world, a mini golf course, tennis
courts, cycle hire, a theatre, a cinema, a library and

SOOS Nature Reserve: a rare site in Europe where
pure carbon dioxide rises out of the ground. There is
a 1.2km nature trail which leads visitors around the peat
bog, and an observation and conservation station can
also be found nearby.
Komorní Hůrka: the youngest volcano in the country.
Ostroh (Seeberg): originally a Romanesque medieval
castle later rebuilt into a country residence. The
building houses a collection of furniture from the 19th
century and a museum with a permanent exhibition on
the Cheb countryside in the 19th century.
Bismarck observation tower (Zelená hora u Chebu):
stone observation tower rebuilt in 2005.
Cheb: a once strategically situated town with
a Romanesque chateau and many Gothic, Renaissance
and Baroque buildings and merchants’ houses dating
from the early 15th century, such as the Špalíček and
Valdštejn Houses.

he West Bohemian spa town of Jáchymov is
situated in a deep wooded valley in the foothills
of the Krušné Mountains. The surrounding hills
provide breathtaking views, astonishing in their beauty,
at any time of the year. At the beginning of the 20th
century a rich supply of radon was discovered by
miners of uranium ore in the former silver mines,
leading to the founding of the spa grounds and the first
sanatorium. The treatments on offer here are
associated with discoveries made by Marie Curie, and
one of the spa houses is named after her.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
The healing power of the natural radon water is used
to treat patients with infections and degenerative
diseases of the motor neuron system, as well as for
treating people who have recently undergone an
operation or suffered an injury. Diabetes and nervous
disorders are also treated here.
Free time activities
In the town and surrounding area, there are tennis
courts, minigolf, bike rental, fitness centres and
a solarium. In the nearby Krušné Mountains are crosscountry
skiing, and hiking and cycling trails. Tourists
can also visit local sights like the Royal Mint (Museum
of Mining and Coin Production), attend concerts in the
Church of All Saints or in the spa houses, or attend
mass in the Church of St Jáchym.

he small town of Lázně Kynžvart is located 780m
above sea level near the Slavkovsky forest, and it is
its location that gives rise to the specific climatic
conditions that are legally approved as one of the local
healing resources. According to the by-law relating to the
spa’s location: ‘Lázně Kynžvart is the most important spa
in the Czech Republic for treating diseases of the
respiratory tract in children.’ The spa was founded by the
Metternich family in the middle of the 19th century on the
basis of analysis of local mineral springs and climatic
conditions. An important turning point in the history of
the spa was the year 1950. That year the remarkable
healing effects of the local climate were discovered during
the whooping cough epidemic. Since then the spa has
specialized in the treatment of children from the ages of 2
to 15. Treatment of diseases of the respiratory tract was
eventually expanded to include allergic skin diseases and,
because of the suitability of the water, the treatment of
kidney and urinary tract diseases in children and
teenagers.

onstantinovy Lázně is situated north-west of
Pilsen 510m above sea level. It is one of the least
polluted places in the Czech Republic. Mineral
springs discovered in Konstantinovy Lázně have the
highest content of CO2 in the country. The tranquil,
family-oriented atmosphere, numerous idyllic,
comfortable spa houses, wonderful little pavilions
housing the springs shaded by tall trees, and statues
dotted around the park, all transform this already
wonderful countryside into an even more magical and
calming spot. The local restaurants and cafes serve the
local herb liqueur, Konstantin, enjoyed by the famous
Czech painter Max Švabinský during his stay in the town.

n a spot where lovely natural scenery is formed
from the Krušné and Doupovské Mountains, you
can find Klášterec nad Ohří. It has been a popular
spa summer resort since the beginning of the last
century, thanks to the discovery of the Eugenie curative
spring in 1883. Today the Eugenie spring is once more
the centre of new integrated grounds with spa
buildings, colonnade and restaurants. Klášterec is
ornamented by a pseudo-gothic style castle with
a large English park where you can admire baroque
allegorical sculptures of the seasons, the continents of
the world and ancient scenes by Jan Brokoff.

Klášterec’s curative mineral waters belong to the cold,
slightly mineralized ferrous acidulous water of the
hydrogen bicarbonate type. They have increased
fluoride and metasilicate acid content. The
balneologically important component of natural carbon
dioxide also makes the mineral water tastier and
fresher. Free carbon dioxide is a valuable ingredient in
the bath soaks that are prescribed for treatment of
circulatory problems and degenerative illnesses of the

eplice is the oldest spa in Central Europe, with
an almost two thousand year old tradition of
spa treatment. It is located in northern
Bohemia in the foothills of the Krušné Mountains. The
origins of the history of the city are linked to the
curative springs which were already known about two
thousand years ago. This was proven by discoveries
of Roman coins in the Pravřídlo Spring and Celtic
jewellery from the beginning of our era in the Obří
Spring near Duchcov. By the 18th and 19th centuries,
it was known as ‘Little Paris’ or the ‘Salon of Europe’,
and among its most important visitors were Tsar Peter I,
the Swedish King Gustav IV, the Prussian King
Friedrich Wilhelm III, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johan
Wolfgang Goethe, Richard Wagner, Frederic Chopin
and Franz Liszt. At the present time the most up to
date modern spa facilities provide comprehensive
diagnostic and therapeutic options, as well as high
standards of accommodation and catering services.

Teplice spa’s tradition of treatment lies in the effects of
the Pravřídlo, Hynie and Horský Pramen natural
mineral springs used for bathing. The springs are
a natural medium mineralised curative water of the
hydrogen-carbonate-sulphuric-lime-sodium type, with
an increased level of fluoride, hypotonic with a slight
(0,5 kBq/l) content of radon and metasilicate acid. The
temperature of the thermal water is 39 – 44°C.
In all the spa houses, the springs are used for treatment

Visit the Krušné Mountains theatre (Krušnohorské
divadlo), the community centre or the Beethoven spa

Bohemia Philharmonic, musical festivals, promenade

A celebrated tradition
of spa treatment
Holy Virgin Mary, built in 1906 in the Venetian style to
the design of the architect Pietro Biagillia, is the only
building of its kind in Central Europe.
Bílina: archaeological dig – fortifications from the time
of the Přemysl kings.
Chlumec: a monument built in 1913 to celebrate the
victory of the Russian-Czech-Austrian allied armies
over Napoleon in the August 1813 battle not far from
this castle.
Castle Teplice: in the courtyard visitors can see the
foundation of the basilica of the mediaeval monastery
and Roman catacombs. The castle was built during the
Renaissance, and some elements of the baroque and
neoclassicism were added later.

from the city of Roudnice nad Labem in
a quiet corner of the Ústí region. All the spa
buildings are surrounded by a romantic park and fishing
lake. Most interesting of the pavilions is the art nouveau
Dvorana building, a work of the famous architect Jan
Letzel, in later life celebrated mainly in Japan. As well as
traditional spa treatments, Mšené Spa also offers a wide
spectrum of relaxation and wellness programmes,
starting with short weekend stays for busy managers
and ‘beauty weekends’ for women, up to week long

curative source – peat – and on movement therapy. The
spa has its own source of the peat which is used mainly

ázně Kundratice originated as a part of the town
of Osečná in 1881, and is one of the oldest spas in
Bohemia. Ferrous sulphate peat is used as
a natural curative resource. Kundratice Spa offers its
clients procedures that are highly beneficial for
diseases of the locomotive apparatus. The location of
the spa takes advantage of the favourable climatic
conditions of the Ještědský mountain range that
protects Lázně Kundratice from the cold north-easterly
winds. The countryside around the spa is rich in pine
forests, groves, meadows and ponds.

Kundratice Spa offers its clients effective procedures
for treatment of the following diseases of the
locomotive apparatus: rheumatoid arthritis,
Bechterev’s disease, spinal blockages, chronic disc
syndromes and conditions after disc surgery, arthrosis,
spondylosis, spondylarthrosis, disturbed locomotive
stereotypes, muscular rheumatism, muscular diseases,
ligaments and anadesma, whether of inflammatory,
toxic or traumatic origin. Besides these illnesses, it is
possible to have an effect on associated diseases of the
hyperuricaemia type, high blood pressure, ischemic
disease of the lower limbs, diabetes and similar.
The supporting therapeutic programme consists of
baths in natural curative sulphuric ferrous peat, and
this treatment is supplemented according to need by
a variety of massages, pine, sulphurous, iodine, pearl
baths, water cures, and by many other procedures
including acupuncture, gas injections, cryotherapy and
chiropractics. At the present time the therapeutic
procedures have been expanded to include treatment

anské Lázně, a city frequently called the other
gateway to the highest mountains in the Czech
Republic, the Krkonoše range, is situated
616–1299m above sea level. There is something in town
for every visitor who favours an active life style, with the
Krkonoše National Park, ski centres and unique tourist
attractions nearby. The omnipresent fresh mountain air

Janské Spa is located in the middle of Janské Lázně, the

Hostinné: a former Franciscan church now houses an
exhibition of classical art including copies of pieces that
no longer exist.
Source of the Úpa River: the peat bog concealing the
source of the Úpa is one of the largest in the Krkonoše
range and is formed by alpine meadows where dwarf
pines grow.

of the Clam-Gallas family near the Czech
Republic’s northern border with Poland. This spa

the picturesque foothills of the Krkonoše
Mountains. The Anenské Slatinné Lázně (Ann’s
Peat Spa), a.s., is so named in honour of a Prussian
princess who experimented with the beneficial effects of

elichovky, a village with a more than century-old
spa tradition, is situated in fertile rolling
countryside 20km from Hradec Králové. In 1897
the discovery of chalk peat (peloid) of unique chemical
composition led to the foundation of the spa and its

his spa town is located 8km northwest of
Pardubice. The first written record dates from
1264, but according to undocumented accounts,
there was already a wooden church here in the 12th
century. The spa was founded in 1897. In 1963, the
municipality of Bohdaneč was granted a charter as
a spa town, in 1971 as a city, and in 1981 was renamed
Lázně Bohdaneč (Bohdaneč Spa). In the 20th century,
the noted Czech architect, Josef Gočár, produced a new
design for the city that gave it a unique spa atmosphere.
The flat countryside is very inviting for quiet walks,
undemanding cycling tours on the marked trails, or for
horseback riding. One popular tourist destination is the
Bohdaneč Ponds located in the National Nature
Reserve. Not only nature, but the historic centre of the
town, too, with its fountains and rich greenery, helps
create the spa town’s calming atmosphere.

Two fundamental curative resources are used for
treatment of the locomotive apparatus: seed sedge
peat and alkaline acidulous water.
Free time activities
Pool, sauna, solarium, bike rental: the vicinity of the
town is perfect for undemanding cycling trips as well as

and golf. Classical and modern architecture (the
classicist Town Hall, the baroque Church of Mary

early Renaissance. The result was a twin towered castle
of which only the cylindrical tower on the southeast side
remains, forming part of a four wing palace. Kunětická
Hora is an important location from an architectural
point of view for its fortifications built using huge earth
bulwarks, stone walls, dry moats and roundels.

he town of Poděbrady is situated in the fertile
Elbe plane around 50km from Prague. The spa
began to develop here in the 17th century and is
situated between two parks where thick forest extends

he town of Bechyně can be found in the valley of
the River Lužnice in South Bohemia around 20km
south-west of Tábor. The spa here is one of the
oldest in the Czech Republic. Spa treatments with a three
hundred year old tradition use local natural resources,
namely mud brought from nearby Komárovské blato. It
is not just those staying at the spa who appreciate the
many local tourist attractions – Bechyně Chateau, whose
current appearance is the result of work carried out by
Petr Vok of the Rožmberk family, and the well known
bridge nicknamed the ‘Bechyně Rainbow’.

The local aromatic mud has a unique capacity for holding

heat and can transfer that heat into the body seven times
faster than other thermal spring water can. The mud is
used to treat patients with musculoskeletal problems.
Free time activities
Those staying at the spa can make use of bicycles,
tennis courts, table tennis and snooker tables. Horse
riding is another possibility. Some 6km outside
Bechyně, visitors will find the 1st South Bohemian Golf
Club with a nine-hole course, a training area and high
quality golf equipment hire. In the summertime you
can view the tower of the Church of St. Matthew.

he ancient town of Třeboň is located in the typically
picturesque landscape of southern Bohemia at an
altitude of 430–530m above sea level. Thanks to its
vast wealth of water sources it has earned the
appellations ‘a town of lakes’ for Třeboň and ‘a landscape
of mirrors’ for the Třeboň basin. It has also been
designated a rural conservation area and a UNESCO
biosphere reserve. The spa, the renaissance chateau, the
adjacent parks and the large expanse of Lake Svět
(World) form a unique entity with a special local colour.
Třeboň is famous for its traditional fish-breeding, so the
local restaurant serves fish delicacies made from
excellent ‘Třeboň carp’. The great variety of culinary

ou can find Bludov spa in the foothills of the
Jeseníky mountains, not far from the city of
Šumperk. We are a modern spa facility offering
spa treatment based on the latest medical knowledge in
the fields of balneology, obesitology and medical
rehabilitation. The spa began treatments here on July
20th, 1929, when Zdeněk Pospíšil opened the
‘Radioactive and sulphate spa in Bludov’. The natural
curative resource is thermal mineral water (sulphatechloride-sodium
type with a high fluoride content and
with a marked effect on arthritis) that gushes out right in
the grounds of the spa. Bludov spa has a long tradition
of treating diseases of the locomotive apparatus in
adults. In the last few decades it has become well known
for the treatment of obesity in children.

he spa at Velké Losiny is one of the oldest in
Moravia. It lies in the foothills of the Jeseníky
Mountains near the town of Šumperk. The spa
district is made up of four pavilions from the turn of
the century, and a park with many precious plants
such as rhododendrons. Velké Losiny is a unique place
thanks to its perfectly preserved, operational paper
mill. The paper produced here is used by the
president of the Czech Republic. The spa at Velké
Losiny brings together the best aspects of large spa
towns – a tranquil environment set in a beautiful
landscape.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
The warm, sulphur-rich spring water is used to treat
various neurological complaints, respiratory diseases,
rheumatism, arthritis and back and joint pains. There
are also various procedures designed to ease recovery
after fractures and joint replacement operations.
Free time activities
Visitors can enjoy fishing (without a fishing permit) in
the spa park where they will also find a rental centre
with fishing equipment. Guests can also play minigolf or

he village of Lipová-lázně can be found between
the Rychlebské and Hrubý Jeseník mountain
ranges around 5km from the town of Jeseník. The
treatments used here today have a 150-year tradition,
and were designed by the spa pioneer Johann Schroth.
The immaculate environment of the surrounding
mountainous landscape with its wide, rounded ridges,
tree-covered slopes and rock formations provides
a relaxing, soothing atmosphere for all who come here.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
Thanks to the local climate, the spa specializes in the
treatment of psoriasis (including types affecting joints),
all kinds of eczema, occupational skin complaints, acne
and other chronic skin diseases. Diabetes, thyroid
gland problems, obesity and metabolic disorders are
also treated here.
Free time activities
Lipová is an attractive place at all times of the year. In
winter there are two ski centres, and around the village
there are several kilometres of cross-country skiing
trails. From spring through until late autumn there are
excellent conditions in the surrounding area for light

arlova Studánka is a spa with a 200 year old
tradition, located 800m above sea level in the
Hrubý Jeseník mountains in the charming
valley of the Bílá Opava river. About 10km from the spa
stands the highest mountain in Moravia, Praděd, at
1,491.6m above sea level. Karlova Studánka spa is
surrounded by virgin forests and the cleanest air in
Central Europe. The village itself is ancient, with
origins reaching back to the 14th century. The original
German name of Karlsbrunn was derived from King
Carl Ludwig who defeated Napoleon and used to
come here to rest and hunt.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
The local curative mineral water is used to treat
patients suffering from chronic diseases of the upper
bronchial passages, diseases of asthmatic or allergic
origin, work-related diseases, disturbances of the
function of the lungs in miners, oncological diseases
and circulatory disorders. Karlova Studánka spa also
treats diseases of the locomotive apparatus – the local
spring water and the skill of the rehabilitation nurses
help to improve the state of health.
Free time activities
The surrounding mountain region offers lots of active
recreation and ideal conditions for hiking and cycling.
We recommend everyone visit Praděd, the highest
mountain in Moravia. Tourists can take the Falls of the
Bílá Opava River educational trail, marked in yellow
from Karlova Studánka to Praděd. Cyclists can take
cycle trail No. 6075 from Karlova Studánka. In the
winter Karlova Studánka is an ideal place from which
to set out for Na Ovčárně ski centre.

a unique view of the Beskydy mountain panorama. Spa

rare local iodine-bromide water with its overall

The spa treats diseases of the locomotive apparatus,
neurological and gynaecological diseases, as well as
circulatory problems.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
The foundation of spa treatment is the use of natural
curative resources. The Klimkovice Sanatoria offer
a truly unusual source: iodine-bromide water, generally
known as Klimkovice brine, is a unique mineral water,
originally sea water from the time of the Tertiary
buckling. It has a high concentration of mineral salts
and an unusually high concentration of iodine. Its level
is 900 times higher than ordinary sea water, and the
content of other mineral elements is almost double the
usual amounts. The brine has a high percentage of
bromine, and the curative effect also depends on the
overall ion content and the degree of acidity (pH
factor). The appearance of the water from the fossil
source is related to the coal deposits in the Ostrava
region where water from the tertiary sea that was here
6.5 – 11 million years ago was stored in sand beds
created by the stormy movement of the earth’s strata.
The rarity of these sources is multiplied by their scarcity
and exhaustibility.

he town of Kostelec u Zlína is located in a magical
countryside between the Hostýnské and Vizovické
Hills, not far from the city of Zlín. The spa industry
started here as long ago as 1742. The town’s fame
depended mainly on the natural sulphuric springs which
were used to cure diseases of the skin and locomotive
apparatus. The spa hotel on the top of the hill has
a wonderful view over the surrounding forests.

Mineral water with a high sulphur content is used to treat
patients with diseases of the locomotive apparatus and
joints, back and upper vertebra pain, and rheumatism, as
well as skin conditions such as eczema, dandruff and
acne. Other spa procedures include pearl baths, mud
wraps, massages, underwater massages and more.

The integrated spa complex offers a nine-hole golf course,
driving range with training green, chipping and putting

Kostelec – Štípa: the baroque Cathedral of the Virgin
Mary, and Větrák windmill standing on a hilltop southeast
of the town.
Lukov: historic ruin from the first half of the 13th
century, on a rock hidden in the forest.
Malenovice: a castle in the south-west part of Zlín
founded in the second half of the 14th century. The
interior of the castle is decorated with wonderful
frescos (main hall, chapel). Exhibitions are held here.
Zlín: renaissance chateau where the Southeast
Moravia Museum is located – with permanent
exhibitions dedicated to archaeology, and local folk
costumes.
Zlín – Lešná: Zoo in the castle grounds founded in
1948. Its biggest attractions are penguins, walruses and
Lipizzaner horses. In the centre of the park is a small
chateau with a collection of antique furniture.
Rožnov pod Radhoštěm: the city located in the
southern foothills of the sacred Radhošť mountain, the
Valašské open-air heritage museum (60 protected folk
buildings from the Valašsko region).
Loučka Observation Tower: metal observation tower,
676m above sea level, 55m high, with 173 steps.

Vizovice: late baroque French style chateau built
between 1750 and 1770. It contains collections of artistic
furniture, porcelain, arms, paintings; priceless
decoration of the chapel and the main hall; adjacent
park in French and English style; R. Jelínek’s Distillery
Land: Traditional manufacture of fruit liqueurs with
specialist and general tours.
Velké Karlovice – Razula primaeval forest: Razula
national nature reserve, only remaining example of
primaeval edible beech forest (200 year old trees).
Spytihněv – Baťa Canal: historic waterway on the
Morava river where you can sail in your own or rented
boats of all kinds.
Brdo Observation Tower: stone, 24m high observation
tower built of sandstone in 2004 on the highest of the
Chřiby hills.
Modrá Archaeological Open-air Heritage Museum:
the archaeological open-air heritage museum in Modrá
is on the original site of a Great Moravia settlement
next to the Velehrad.
Luhačovice: a spa town full of art nouveau buildings,
the oldest being a three wing baroque castle; also
baroque chapel, colonnade and Brussels fountain.

he town of Luhačovice lies in a picturesque
valley in the White Carpathian conservation area
in the south-eastern reaches of Moravia. The
history of the local spa goes back over three centuries.
Luhačovice’s heyday came in the early 20th century
following developments in modern balneology, and the
town gradually became a very popular spa frequented
by many famous personalities, such as the composer
Leoš Janáček.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
One spring rich in sulphur and 17 other types of
mineral water rich in CO2, chloride and sodium, are
used to treat patients with respiratory and digestive
problems, diabetes and obesity, and musculoskeletal
complaints. The Vincentka spring is the most
celebrated in Luhačovice.
Free time activities
The town has a sports centre, indoor swimming pools,
a sauna, a solarium, fitness centres, tennis courts,
sports grounds, a minigolf course, a bowling alley and
a sports equipment rental centre. Anglers can use the
local reservoir. The surrounding area is perfect for
hiking and cycling.

he spa at Ostrožská Nová Ves is situated amid
a beautiful, tranquil park in the vicinity of several
lakes around eight kilometres from the town of
Uherské Hradiště in the heart of the Slovácko Region.
The spa tradition here goes back to 1903 when
chemical tests and experiments confirmed the curative
properties of the water from the surrounding swamps
and marshes. The spa buildings are surrounded by ten
hectares of parkland, and the surrounding flatlands are
protected by the ridges of the White Carpathian and
Chřiby Mountains. A speciality of the spa is the SINOVA
brand of natural cosmetics made with water from the
sulphurous springs.

Two types of sulphurous spring water rich in silicic
acid, calcium, sodium, magnesium, potassium and
iron, are used to treat musculoskeletal problems and
skin complaints like psoriasis, eczema and acne.
Free time activities
Visitors to the spa have access to a sauna, an indoor
swimming pool with countercurrent, minigolf, skittles
and table tennis; they can also hire bicycles and
rollerblades, and go fishing in the nearby lake, swim in
quarries, or use the tennis court in Ostrožská Nová
Ves. In Kunovice near Uherské Hradiště visitors can
take to the air for a bird’s eye view of this beautiful

odonín, one of the newest spas in the country,
can be found in the heart of the Slovácko
region in Moravia where the borders of the
Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria converge. The spa
began treating patients in 1979 and the buildings and
surrounding parkland have a modern, neat look. The
town is the birthplace of the first Czechoslovak
president, T. G. Masaryk, who also established his
summer residence here. The local wine producing
tradition, wine tasting and numerous folk celebrations
make a visit to the region a pleasant experience for
thousands of visitors annually. The local iodine-bromide
water (brine) comes from three local wells at a depth of
almost two kilometres below the earth’s crust, and is
among the best of its kind in Europe.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
The natural spring water, rich in iodine and bromine, as
well as sources of natural gas, are used to treat patients
with problems of the locomotive apparatus, problems
of the central nervous system and circulatory disorders.
A significant part of the treatments here involve mineral
baths, the application of thermo-therapy, classic,
underwater and reflex massage, various kinds of baths
(bubbles, herbs, etc.), electrotherapy, gas injections
and treatment using a myostimulator.

The spa has cycles for hire and organizes trips to
places in the surrounding area as well as boat trips on
the River Morava – all available to spa guests.

Mikulčice: foundations of a Slav settlement dating from
the 7th century which became the most important
town in the Great Moravian Empire during the 9th
century. There is also a museum housing various
artefacts found at the site.
Petrov – Plže: preserved village with wine cellars dug
into the hillside above. Simple but beautiful folk
architecture with blue and white façades.

he area surrounding the south Moravian village of
Lednice is the largest parkland fashioned according to
English romantic principles of landscape architecture.
The Lednice Valtice area is protected by UNESCO for its
artificial landscaping, including 87 cultural monuments.
Besides the two large castle complexes, you can visit many
romantic architectural remains here. One such is the
unexpected construction of a slim Islamic minaret. It is the
oldest preserved look out in the Czech Republic, and at the
same time the tallest building of its kind in any non-Muslim
country. Lednice spa was opened in the autumn of 2006,
and offers modern rehabilitation equipment,
comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation programmes.
Natural curative resources, medical indications
Lednice spa has been created in the heart of remarkable
countryside – the Lednice-Valtice grounds. The climate
and iodine-bromide mineral water here act as
preventatives, are helpful after injuries and surgeries, and
are used to treat problems of the locomotive apparatus,
neurological diseases and circulatory problems, as well as
gynaecological problems and burns. Lednice has deposits
of strongly mineralized iodine-bromide water with an
iodine content of over 30 mg/l and bromide between

40-60 mg/l. The natural curative source is accompanied
by hydrotherapy, massages, cryotherapy, electrotherapy,
carbonic bath, reflex therapy and kinesitherapy, lava
stone massage, body peel, anti-cellulite wrap, blossom
bath, Hawaiian massage, Dead Sea or cinnamon wrap.
Free time activities
The Lednice-Valtice area is a unique place for hiking and
recreational cycling. You can rent bicycles right in Lednice
or even in several neighbouring villages. The nearby
Pálava district, because of its varied terrain, is more
suitable for proficient cyclists. Hippotourism (trekking on
horseback) is generally available in the district, or you can
enjoy yourself fishing. The location is popular because of
its natural ponds with pure water and pleasant bathing.

Excursions in the vicinity
Chateau Valtice: besides visits to the interiors and
exterior, there are interesting chateau cellars where you
can find public wine tasting of the one hundred best
wines in the Czech Republic.
Lednice-Valtice area: you can hike or bike around
Chateau Lednice, Janohrad and Minaret, or rent a small
boat.
Mikulov: lovely colourful multi-faceted small town with
excellent wine cellars, as well as Svatý Kopeček castle and
place of pilgrimage.
Lednice Ponds educational trail: this 15km long trail is
one of the most interesting ornithological locations in the
Czech Republic.
Kyjov: the place where folk songs, music and literature
are preserved almost intact. Every fourth year (since
1921), Kyjov celebrates its Slovácký Year ethnic festival.

Electricity
The supply voltage of electrical circuits in the Czech
Republic is 220V AC at 50Hz, which harmonises with the
majority of European countries. The size and
configuration of the electric outlet is also of the
European type: two openings with a small prong in the
middle (earth).
Language
For the last few years, tourists and immigration into the
Czech Republic have been increasing, and thus the
number of citizens (especially in Prague) who speak
foreign languages has also grown correspondingly.
Sales people and staff in hotels and restaurants located
in the centre of Prague speak good English, German and
Russian. The majority of the older population also speak
Russian and German fluently.
Currency
The Czech units of currency are the Czech crown (Kč)
and the haléř (h). There are one hundred haléř to the
crown. Notes are in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500,
1000, 2000, and 5000 Czech crowns. Coins are 1, 2, 5, 10,
20, 50 Czech crowns, and there is also a 50 haléř coin.

Currency Exchange
To change money it is best to go to a branch of any large
bank or travel office, or draw out cash from any
bankomat (ATM). American Express Travellers’ Cheques
can be cashed at the nearest American Express branch
without any charge. Under no circumstances should you
exchange money with strangers on the street. In the first
place this is against the law, and second, you may be
cheated.
Medical assistance
One of the least pleasant situations a tourist can get into
during their trip abroad is an unexpected illness or

injury. In the event of drastic deterioration in health and
a need for urgent medical attention, turn immediately to
the Stanice první pomoci (First Aid Station). The
Emergency Medical Services telephone number is 155. If
you call this number from a call box, you do not need
money or a card. If you do not understand Czech, we
recommend you ask someone to help as a translator.
If you do not need urgent medical help, but a visit to the
doctor is necessary, then it is best to take a taxi to the ‘Na
Homolce’ Hospital in Prague 5. There is a clinic for
foreigners, and you will find doctors there who speak
English, German and Russian. If your health does not
demand immediate medical intervention, you can find
several clinics in Prague where they will provide the
necessary medical care for a fee, and offer all the
medical services necessary, from initial examination to
transport to hospital. Medicines are only sold in
pharmacies. Foreigners who are visiting the Czech
Republic for a short while only need to take out
insurance in case medical care is required. Health
insurance for foreigners is available from Pojišťovna
Všeobecné Zdravotní Pojišťovny (PVZP), Pojišťovna
Slavia and UNIQUA Pojišťovna insurance companies.

Telephoning
You can call from a telephone box if you insert coins in
the special slot, or use a telephone card available from
all newspaper stands. Telephone cards are sold for
different amounts of time, so the price varies. If you only
need to make a local call, it is best to use the coinoperated
box and do without the card. Nowadays in the
Czech Republic the norm is to use a mobile phone. SIM
cards are for sale here, complete with telephone
number, that do not require you to have a residence
permit. Czech carriers work in the European GSM band.
