food & nutrition services
The Food & Nutrition Department at Boca
Raton Regional Hospital is one of the largest
departments in the Hospital, encompassing
Clinical Dietitians, all employees in the cafeteria
(both retail and culinary), the Fountain Grill and
those in Hospitality Services.
Boca Regional has a team of nine Registered
Dietitians; several with more than 15 years of
experience in the nutrition field. Registered
Dietitians are food and nutrition experts, who
work with patients and the community to
promote and educate healthy eating habits.
Their ultimate goal is to optimize nutritional
care for our patients and help individuals
understand how nutrition is such an important
part of the treatment and recovery process for
many illnesses. The food production staff works
diligently to ensure excellent food quality and
safety. Every day, managers perform audits
and inspect everything from the serving line
to freezers; examining the whole department,
from the temperature of food to the cleanliness
of the equipment. This is done to find areas
where the team can improve and continue to
provide the best possible service.
In an effort to promote healthy eating to both
patients and employees, the Department
has expanded its menu and revamped food
preparation. Employees can now enjoy madeto-order
breakfast, which includes pancakes,
omelets and eggs.
All of the entrées are prepared fresh in the
kitchen and include fresh or frozen vegetables,
never canned. Another exciting addition is the
Action Station, which features a different lunch
option every Tuesday and Thursday.
a message from
the president
Dear Colleagues,
Healthcare in our country is facing enormous challenges. Declining reimbursements,
mandated requirements in the way we deliver care, increasing supply
costs and a host of other matters are having a material impact on hospitals.
The sum effect of these trends is that for the first time in four years we have
taken a step back in our financial performance. While our present financial
status in no way begins to approach that of four years ago, it is a position that
we cannot accept if we are to continue our renaissance.
In order to overcome these challenges, we must make adjustments in the way
we manage our Hospital’s operations. Failure to act decisively and quickly to
our current situation would waste the substantial improvements we have
realized over the past three years and jeopardize our ability to continue our
evolution as a regional referral center.
Our Senior Management team needs your help. Each of you, regardless of
position or title, has stewardship over the Hospital. You can control the use
of supplies and recommend better ways to do things. It is your observations,
insights and suggestions that can help us be more effective and more efficient.
It is the way you engage physicians, patients, family members and visitors that
cement relationships we have with those who turn to us for care. And all of us
can serve as ambassadors for Boca Regional within our own social circles to
foster awareness of our capabilities and to recommend the Hospital should the
need arise. You have the ability to affect every encounter, every opportunity.
We find ourselves in extraordinary times. A time that will require us to be
resolute and resilient. We will again be tested, much like we were four years
ago, but under different circumstances and with different objectives. Then,
our goal was simply to right a hospital teetering on the brink. Today it is to
continue our growth in order to fulfill the potential and assume the greatness
that is within our grasp. I never doubted we would not succeed in our
objective back then. Nor do I doubt we will not succeed in the objectives
of today. We are up to the task. Each and every one of us.
discovered through performing her
have to defer care because of financial
constraints. Through her tireless efforts, Pink Ball has raised
over $20,000 that has gone to assist women in our community.
A patient recently lauded Sue for going
above and beyond to help him in his
time of need. Even though Sue’s shift was
over and she was on her way home, she
still stopped to help a patient, who was
visiting his wife in the Hospital, when he
felt dizzy and disoriented. Not only did
she provide the patient with immediate
care, she stayed with him for over two hours, helping with
admission papers and notifying his wife of his condition.
Each year, during the winter season, residents
in communities throughout the region hear
firsthand about the services, technology
and advances taking place at Boca Raton
Regional Hospital. The Foundation’s Town
Hall meetings provide a forum for Hospital
administration, physicians and staff to
educate the community, answer questions
and encourage feedback from residents.
“We started the Town Hall meetings several
years ago as a way to get out into the
community and educate donors and other
area residents about all the wonderful things
happening at the Hospital,” said Jan Savarick,
Foundation President. “We wanted to assure
them that the Hospital was here to meet their
needs, and at the same time, we wanted to
provide potential donors with ideas about areas
of the Hospital that needed their support.”
The Foundation started off with just a few
communities, including St. Andrews Country
Club, Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club and
Boca West Country Club, and hundreds of
people attended. The success of those early
meetings has led to an expansion of the
program, and now the Foundation schedules
the forums in up to 10 gated communities
each year. Jerry Fedele, President and
CEO, leads the discussion topics, which
have included medical advancements and
technology as well as spotlighted emergency,
cardiac and cancer services. Physician speakers
explain new techniques and advances and
field questions from the audience.
“We always get an extremely positive
reaction,” says Jan. “People are so
impressed to learn that their hospital
offers such a wide array of highly rated and
specialized services.”
Each year, Boca Regional celebrates NHW and honors
our nurses, allied health staff and all our support
personnel. This year’s theme was Making Miracles
Happen and both day and night-shift employees were
honored. Day-shift employees enjoyed a cookout by
the pond complete with games, raffles and a live DJ.
The night-shift employees were celebrated later in the
evening in the employee cafeteria.
At Boca Regional, we see NHW not as recognition
of buildings, but rather what transpires within those
buildings. It is recognition of people and their skills,
compassion and dedication. To the 2,000 staff
members of Boca Raton Regional Hospital, we truly
thank you for all that you do.
